The Thanksgiving holiday is grounded in deep tradition, originating hundreds of years ago when early settlers of this country, escaping from religious persecution in their European homelands, gathered with native Americans to partake in their annual rites of feast and celebration to “give thanks” after bountiful harvests of grains, vegetables and fish. The symbolism is as profound and meaningful today as it was in the 1600s. We gather together, family and friends, to enjoy the abundance in our lives and to give thanks. It is as simple as that.

Success Key: Thanksgiving and the Art of Gratitude

Here in the United States, Americans gathered with family and friends yesterday, and, indeed for this entire four-day weekend, to celebrate the most cherished of our country recognized holidays: Thanksgiving.

The Thanksgiving holiday is grounded in deep tradition, originating hundreds of years ago when early settlers of this country, escaping from religious persecution in their European homelands, gathered with native Americans to partake in their annual rites of feast and celebration to “give thanks” after bountiful harvests of grains, vegetables and fish.

The symbolism is as profound and meaningful today as it was in the 1600s. We gather together, family and friends, to enjoy the abundance in our lives and to give thanks. It is as simple as that.

The heart of Thanksgiving – a true recognition of the abundance of which we have been blessed and to give thanks to our Creator for all of the good in our lives – is a powerful mental and spiritual attitude. Much has been written on the “attitude of gratitude” on this site and elsewhere. Being grateful for all that is good in our lives, despite the fact that there may simultaneously exist undesirable circumstances and events, is immensely powerful and empowering. When we focus – and give thanks – for that which is good, we shift our paradigm from that which is “bad” (or, more accurately, from that which we perceive as “bad,” for, as Shakespeare stated, what makes something good or bad is only our saying so), to the “good.”

Seeing (and being grateful for) the good in life is a major paradigm shift. We are all aware of the oft-repeated adage that we may either look at the “glass half empty” or the “glass half full.”

And so, on Thanksgiving Day, Americans from all walks of life gather together, refrain from looking at the glass “half empty,” and express, to the best of our abilities, true gratitude for all that we have been blessed.

Thanksgiving is a beautiful holiday.

But, how many of us return to our old ways after the holiday? Indeed, the day after Thanksgiving has been named “Black Friday,” in reference to the mad, insane shopping and sales phenomena that takes place on that day in anticipation of the Christmas holy day yet a month away (Thanksgiving always takes place on the fourth Thursday of November, so the following day – Black Friday – is always on a Friday).

Black Friday is insane. Stores open at 3:00 and 4:00 am. In fact, one famous department store chain opened at midnight! Traffic is a mess, as a significant portion of the population takes to the roads to hit their favorite stores looking for bargains. Customers begin lining up at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning – some never even taking time to rest or sleep after their Thanksgiving feast! Patience in many tends to run short. Tempers occasionally flare when customers compete for limited stock (or at least at the bargain prices).

Other than the dinner leftovers in the refrigerators, Thanksgiving is already forgotten within the following 24 hours.

Don’t get me wrong – I love the excitement of the entire weekend and the anticipation of the Christmas holy season, too. Even the insanity of Black Friday has a certain appeal, as we are now into the “official Christmas holiday (commercial) season.” In fact, many of my family members partake in the annual Black Friday shopping ritual because, in addition to obtaining great bargains on items that may not be available in a couple of weeks, they simply find it fun. They enjoy the madness, “go with the flow,” and don’t take the extravaganza too seriously.

Yet, I question what happens to our so-called “Attitude of Gratitude” from the previous day.

We need to maintain, and strengthen, our Gratitude EVERY day. It is easy for just about everyone to find it in their hearts to give thanks and express some level of Gratitude on Thanksgiving Day. It comes easy, it comes naturally. It is an annual tradition and ritual, and consciously or not, we prepare for it emotionally and spiritually. When Thanksgiving Day arrives, we have been so conditioned over the years, that it is simply natural to put aside or trials, tribulations and differences, gather with family and friends, feast and give thanks.

Can we cultivate that natural flow of unconditional expression of Gratitude every day? Yes. Do we? Not really. But, what if we did . . . ?

Honest and sincere Gratitude, like many character virtues – most obvious being Patience – MUST be practiced in order for us to become Grateful. The only way to become a Patient person is to practice Patience, particularly when the events and circumstances in our lives seemingly compel anything but Patience. The only way to become a Peaceful and Serene individual is to practice Peacefulness and Serenity, particularly when the events and circumstances in our lives seemingly compel anything but Peacefulness and Serenity. The only way to become a Kind and Loving person is to practice Kindness and to Love, particularly when the events and circumstances in our lives seemingly compel anything but being Kind and giving Love.

And so on and so forth.

Gratitude is more than an “Attitude.” It is an Art. Attitudes can come and go; they are fleeting. But, when practiced, we may transform that which changes like the weather into that which is stable and lasting. Maintaining a true and lasting state of honest and sincere Gratitude is an Art to be practiced and cultivated if we are ever to reap the fruit.

I urge you to practice and develop the Art of Gratitude. It takes time, effort, and of course, Patience. Take time, as much as possible, to reflect and meditate (usually in solitude, if only for a few minutes at a time) on that for which you really are Grateful. Read Success Manuals that teach and expound upon the Power of Gratitude. Write your “Gratitudes” in your personal Success Manual Journal – often (daily, if you can). When you find yourself overwhelmed with negativity of any kind, you must find time to stop and reflect and “break that funk.” Repetition, repetition, repetition. That is how the Art is developed.

Live in Thanksgiving everyday, for everyday that we live, we must be Thankful. Thanksgiving should not be a one-day annual event.

The true Student of Success will come to understand and realize the miraculous Power and Art of Gratitude and the amazing impact an inner State of Gratitude has on the external events and circumstances of our lives.

Do you seek Success in your Life? Start by being Grateful for that which you have been blessed. Abundance, Prosperity and Success abound, but you will fail to see, realize and experience the bounty if you cannot, or will not, work with the Law of Gratitude. The Power of Gratitude cannot be overstated.

Live the Art of Gratitude.

Finally, after what has seemed an eternity and a relentless deluge of challenges and obstacles, we are putting the finishing touches and running the final tests on The Success Manual Prosperity Library web site, featuring The Wattles Prosperity Bible, The Law of Attraction Prosperity Bible and The Wattles Quotable Bible.

If I was not a Student of Success - as was the case in my prior life - I would have called this venture "a nightmare." The Wattles Prosperity Bible

A Five Volume Compilation of the Works of Wallace D. Wattles

When Wallace Delois Wattles was growing up in the post-Civil War America, the country was undergoing major changes in the political, economic and social arenas.

While the South was rebuilding its battered infrastructure, the North, where Wattles lived, was prospering, both industrially and agriculturally. This period, known as the Second Industrial Revolution, began in the mid-19^th century, with the growth and expansion of steel, petroleum, as well as chemical and electrical sectors; railways and steam ship industry also thrived in the still- young nation.

In fact, by the time the 19^th century came to a close and the new one dawned, corporate giants such as U.S. Steel and General Electric spawned the legendary tycoons by the names of Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew P. Mellon, and J.P. Morgan, among other renowned and often notorious wheelers and dealers of that era.

The extravagant lifestyles of these super-rich industrialists and financiers – which prompted Mark Twain to coin the phrase “Gilded Age” to describe the excesses of the wealthy people in the second half of the 1800s – did not, however, reflect the grim living conditions of the working class. Historical records show that in 1890, when Wattles was 30, 11 million of America’s 12 million families earned less than $1,200 a year, with the average annual income of $380, well below the poverty line.

Wallace Delois Wattles: Law of Attraction Sage, Author and Teacher and Master of Success and Prosperity. Mr. Wattles' teachings were a driving force behind Rhonda Byrne's book, "The Secret." How much so? The first time she read "The Science of Getting Rich," she cried!

Not much is known today about Wattles’ life and family, but from the information that is available to us we can surmise that he was born into that modest – not to say poverty-stricken – milieu like the vast majority of his countrymen.

We cannot say with any certainty that he was inspired by the well-heeled tycoons of the era, but we do know that he turned the art of getting rich into a science.

His philosophy about wealth is succinctly summed up in this quote: “Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.”

Putting together Wattles’ biography is a challenging task because very little is known about him. Whether this dearth was a matter of modesty and humility or merely poor record-keeping we cannot guess, but anyone attempting to research Wattles’ life will hit a brick wall riddled with many gaps and holes. For instance, his schooling remains a mystery, as does his family. We know that he had a daughter, Florence, but have no information about his wife. We also know that early on he worked on a farm and later as a lecturer in Indiana, as well as in some capacity at a Methodist Church, but have no clue about any other jobs he might have held. We know he died young – at 51 – of “frail” health, but possess no details of what illness he suffered from. He was a prolific writer, publishing scores of articles, essays and books. Many of the articles and essays were published as compilations; others as single articles. However, specific details as to many of his published works are few.

What little we do know about his childhood and later life can be gleaned from the letters Florence wrote to Wattles’ publisher, Elizabeth Towne. From those letters we can construct a sketchy portrait of a compassionate and caring man of profound convictions, and a prolific writer who believed his ideas would transform people’s lives.

Although Wattles remains – given the scarcity of information about him – somewhat of an enigma, he wrote some of the most powerful self-help books ever published. As a matter of fact, the young farm boy grew up to be a trailblazer in the area of wealth-building, personal empowerment and success, a field that, while in its infancy during Wattles’ lifetime, blossomed as the “New Thought” era, and which today is a billion-dollar industry. Indeed, the “self improvement” market in the U.S. alone is estimated as worth more than $13.9 billion in 2010.[1]

In a way, Wallace Delois Wattles’ life is a quintessential rags-to-riches story.

He was born in 1860 in Illinois, and later lived in Indiana. According to the 1880 US Federal Census, young Wallace was probably the only child of a gardener and a housewife. He lived with his parents on a farm in Nunda Township, McHenry County, Illinois. With little formal education, he spent his early years toiling as a farm laborer. In those days, life on a farm was dismal, requiring long hours of backbreaking labor. Even though new farm equipment was invented and introduced during that period, horses, oxen and people still provided the power that fueled the machines.

Eking out a living from a farm, which relied heavily on weather-dependant crops, was a challenge then, as it is, though maybe to a lesser degree, now. We do not know for sure whether this was the only work Wattles did in his youth, but his life at the time is reported to have been one of poverty, hardship, and failure. We will never know for certain, but perhaps this strife had sparked Wattles’ desire to become successful and rich and to understand proper and healthy living.

One of Florence’s messages to Mrs. Towne provides some insight into what drove her father to overcome his humble beginnings and ultimately led him to pen a series of highly successful self-help books: “For years his life was cursed by poverty and the fear of poverty. He was always scheming and planning to get for his family those things, which make the abundant life possible.”

In 1896, the 36-year-old Midwesterner attended a “convention of reformers” in Chicago, where he met George Davis Herron. Two years Wattles’ junior, Herron was a controversial Congregational Church minister and professor of Applied Christianity at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he attracted attention for his radical religious views, namely a new philosophy called Christian Socialism. A movement that originated in the mid-19th-century Europe, it combined the fundamentals of Socialism with the principles of Christianity as a means of helping the poor.

Florence wrote to Mrs. Towne that her father caught Herron’s social vision. “I shall never forget the morning he came home,” she related. “It was Christmas. Mother had put her last dollar into a cuff box and we had placed it beneath an evergreen branch which served for our Christmas tree and which we had illuminated with tallow candles and strung with popcorn. Finally Father came. With that beautiful smile he praised the tree, said the cuff box was just what he had been wanting - and took us all in his arms to tell us of the wonderful social message of Jesus, the message which he later embodied in ‘A New Christ.’ From that day until his death he worked unceasingly to realize the glorious vision of human brotherhood.”

According to Florence, at one time her father had held a position in the Methodist Church, but was fired because of his “heresy,” possibly the Christian Socialism views, which were not quite compatible with the mainstream Christianity. Two of his books, “A New Christ” and “Jesus: The Man and His Work” focused on Christianity from a Socialist perspective. As a matter of fact, Wattles was so involved in the movement, that he twice ran as a Socialist candidate for two public offices: in the Eighth Congressional District in 1908, and two years later, for the office of Prosecuting Attorney for Indiana’s Madison County’s 50th court district. He lost both elections, but Florence became a delegate to the Socialist Party National Committee in 1912 and 1915.

Another new spiritual movement that Wattles embraced with zeal and conviction, and which had, in large measure, influenced his thinking and writing, was called New Thought. This movement started to emerge in the second half of the 19^th century, at about the same time as Christian Socialism.

This was a turning point for Wattles, the moment that likely re-defined and re-directed his life to some degree.

The movement, which remains active to this day, promotes the idea that all of life’s circumstances and events, whether positive or negative, be they physical or mental in nature, originate in the mind as a consequence of our thinking and beliefs, and, therefore, “right thinking” can change our lives positively.

Like many thinkers and philosophers from a variety of churches and religious denominations, and even some secular groups and individuals as well, Wattles became a proponent of these metaphysical tenets relating to the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, creative visualization, and other essential life forces that formed the basis of his beliefs and writings. Today the self-improvement and personal growth industry is a thriving, multi-billion-dollar sector, but in Wattles’ time it was still in its nascent stages. The New Thought movement, however, marked an important milestone in the development of the self-help phenomenon.

Because of the unbridled optimism, positive energy, and personal empowerment inherent to the New Thought principles, Wattles, along with his contemporaries like Napoleon Hill, Frank Channing Haddock, Thomas Troward, William Walker Atkinson, and, a bit later, Dale Carnegie, had become one of the earliest self-help pioneers – people who believed in improving themselves and all the aspects of their lives by harvesting their spiritual and inner strengths. Essentially, the mind can achieve whatever it can conceive.

Wattles’ brand of motivational self-improvement philosophy is best expressed in this quote of his: “The scientific use of thought consists in forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want; in holding fast to the purpose to get what you want; and in realizing with grateful faith that you do get what you want.”

Wattles discovered an outlet for his ideas in Nautilus, a magazine for New Thought writers founded in 1898 by Elizabeth Towne. In it, Wattles found a fitting forum to advance his ideas and foster his writing skills. As Florence explained: “When we came to Elwood (Indiana) three years ago, Father began a Sunday night lectureship in Indianapolis. This was our only source of income. Later he began to write for Nautilus and to word out his own philosophy. He wrote almost constantly. Then it was that he formed his mental picture. He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality of power, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision.”

Wattles applied the New Thought principles to his own life through personal experimentation. For example, he tested some of the health and food fads fashionable at that time, such as the “No Breakfast Plan,” before encouraging his readers to try out his theories on themselves.

How a poor man with little education was able to form such a far-reaching vision and bring it to fruition with numerous books remains a mystery. What is certain is that his works, at least by some assessments, are among the most powerful personal improvement books ever written.

While Wattles authored numerous works, his best-known are likely the trilogy of “The Science of Being Rich” (1910), “The Science of Being Well” (1910) and “The Science of Being Great” (1911). All three are fitting examples of self-improvement and personal success theories he had become known for, as demonstrated in Florence’s letter to Mrs. Towne: “The supreme faith of the man never left him; never for a moment did he lose confidence in the power of the master Intelligence to right every wrong and to give to every man and woman his or her share of the good things of life.”

The above quote is a paragraph from Chapter 2 of Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich,” a forerunner of every personal finance and self-help book ever written. His statement that this pragmatic text is “intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward,” rings as true in the second decade of the 21^st century as it did when it was first published 100 years ago.

Incredibly, there exists today million dollar self-help businesses founded solely on “The Science of Getting Rich.”

While many people believe that amassing wealth is a matter of hard work, luck, or a combination of both, Wattles promoted a more scientific approach. “There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic,” he famously noted. “There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches, and once these laws are learned and obeyed by anyone, that person will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

“The Science of Getting Rich,” still widely read and highly acclaimed today, laid ground for “The Science of Being Great,” in which Wattles stated that “Greatness is equally inherent in all, and may be manifested by all. Every person may become great.”

The inspirational and motivational message is also clear in “The Science of Being Well,” where Wattles writes that the work is directed at “those who want health, and who want a practical guide and handbook, not a philosophical treatise. It is an instructor in the use of the universal Principle of Life, and my effort has been to explain the way in so plain and simple a fashion that the reader, though he may have given no previous study to New Thought or metaphysics, may readily follow it to perfect health. While retaining all essentials, I have carefully eliminated all non-essentials; I have used no technical, abstruse, or difficult language, and have kept the one point in view at all times.”

The question that arises is whether Wattles successfully applied his New Thought beliefs and theories on how an average person can become rich, happy and healthy regardless of his or her circumstances to his own life. From Florence’s correspondence to Mrs. Towne it would appear that he did. Before his death in 1911 at 51, Florence reported that “he made lots of money, and had good health, except for his extreme frailty.”

There is no information on how many “regular” people who read Wattles’ works in the past century had been influenced by his message. We do know, however, that the Australian New Thought writer Rhonda Byrne said her inspiration for the hit 2006 movie, “The Secret,” as well as the same-titled book, came from Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich.” When she first opened the book in 2004, Byrne relates on her website, “Something inside of me had me turn the pages one by one, and I can still remember my tears hitting the pages as I was reading it. It gave me a glimpse of The Secret and it was like a flame inside of my heart.”

So in the end, the little-known life of Wallace Delois Wattles was, in many ways, a quintessentially American story of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps, succeeding against all odds, and influencing the lives of others. In the words of his daughter Florence, “His life was truly the powerful life.”

Dumont (among many others, in fact), Atkinson wrote dozens and dozens of books on the Infinite Power of Thought and using that God-given gift to attract into your life that which you truly Desire: Success, Prosperity, Health and Wealth.

In Thought Force in Business and Everday Life, Atkinson teaches the practical, everyday actions that one must undertake in order to achieve their Goals and attain Success. Today we have something a bit different.

Today's addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library is a highly Spiritual based work that came at the recommendation of a regular visitor to this site (Thanks, Erin). I found a copy of the book and started reading it and was immediately struck by the beauty of this work. "The Door of Everything" by Ruby Nelson really is a beautiful book.

Now, I must confess that I have not read it all - only the first two chapters. And, of course, while compiling and editing the ebook, I have had the opportunity to absorb the material. So, perhaps, it is possible that the remainder of the book - the portions that I have not read - may not continue the same dance as what I have already read. But, I doubt it.

My intent is to finish The Door of Everything at first chance. I suppose I could easily read it in an evening, after all it is not that lengthy, but that would defeat the purpose. Beautiful written works, like any beautiful work - such as a beautiful painting or a beautiful landscape painted by our Creator - are to be savored. They nourish our Being. They are food for the Soul and Spirit. Most likely, it may take me some time to complete The Door of Everything. I do want to enjoy it.

Recently, we added "The Law and the Word" by Thomas Troward to The Success Manual Free Download Library. Judge Troward, a brilliant writer and perhaps "the Godfather of New Thought," is not easy reading by any means (at least not for me). As a result, despite his legacy with regard to the New Thought movement and the impact of his teachings on modern day Success Masters (e.g., Bob Proctor, Anthony Robbins, etc.), we have been a little hesitant to bring his works into our online fold.

Were we wrong. Hundreds of copies of The Law and the Word have already been downloaded.

Which brings us to today's addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library: "The Creative Process in the Individual" by Thomas Troward. Out of all of his works, I personally find Creative Process easier to assimilate and of immediate practical value. Yes, it has its esoteric qualities as do all of Troward's work; but, it does provide an understandable dissertation on exactly what the title of the work states: The Creative Process in the Individual.

As we noted in our previous post on Troward's work, a primary focus of Creative Process is, as Troward expressly states, "The triumph of principle over precedent, the working out of an Idea to its logical conclusions in spite of the accumulated testimony of all past exerpience to the contrary." In other words, even though the Law of Cause and Effect (the "Law of Laws" according to Emerson) is in full force and effect, we need to be mindful that what happened yesterday has absolutely no bearing on what we do today, unless we allow it. Each day is a fresh start. Yesterday's "failures" belong to yesterday.

The human race has been able to advance as a result of the Triumph of Principle Over Precedent. Each day brings new Opportunity for Growth - and Grow we do (to the extent we allow ourselves). And, Growth of any kind ultimately brings Success and purifes the Soul.

A Cautionary Note: The Creative Process in the Individual, like all Success Manuals - but particularly so here - is NOT a book that one simply picks up, reads and puts back on the book shelf to collect dust. It IS a Success Manual, to be read and studied with purpose and intent. The conveyed words of Wisdom are to be savored, absorbed into our consciousness and analyzed. To approach this work any other way is a waste of time and energy.

Lastly, please keep in mind my prior explanation on the "ether" as you read this book to avoid any confusion.

Now, roll up your sleeves and get to work!

Truly, this is one of THE best Success-Spirituality books that I have ever read. Actually, I only just read it as I compiled and edited the work, but I intend to now read it again and study it thoroughly. I found that many of Russell's concepts - including some verbatim quotes - have been used by Bob Proctor in his teachings, courses and lectures. I am sure many more Success Masters also rely upon this rare Success Manual Classic as well.

God does not run after you when you leave His House. He lets you work out your own salvation. He lets you find yourself. He knows nothing outside Himself by which to divide or to separate Himself. In fact, He doesn’t even know that you have gone away. If He did know that you were away, you could never get back. What God knows is unchangeable.

The Secret of the Master Mind

The mind that masters himself creates his own ideas, thoughts and desires through the original use of his own imaging faculty, while the mind that does not master himself forms his thoughts and desires after the likeness of impressions received through the senses; and is therefore controlled by the conditions from which those impressions come, because as we think so we act and live. Accordingly the master mind is a mind that thinks what he wants to think regardless of what circumstances, environments or associations may suggest.

The average mind desires what the world desires without any definite thought as to its own highest welfare or greatest need, the reason being that a strong tendency to do likewise or to imitate is always produced in the mind when desires are formed in the likeness of impressions that are suggested by external conditions. It is therefore evident that a person who permits himself to be affected by suggestion will invariably form artificial desires. And to follow such desires is to be misled in every instance. The master mind, however, desires only that which is conducive to real life here and now and in the selection of those desires is never influenced in the least by the desires of the world.

The power of desire is one of the greatest of all powers in the human system. It is therefore highly important that every desire be normal and created for the welfare of the individual himself. But no desire is normal that is formed through the direct influence of suggestions. Such desires are always abnormal and cause the individual to be misplaced.

This explains why a very large number of people are misplaced. They do not occupy those places wherein they may be their best and accomplish the most. They are working at a disadvantage and are living a life that is far inferior to what they are intended to live, and because of abnormal desires. They have imitated the desires of others without consulting their own present need. They have formed the desire to do what others are doing, permitting their minds to be influenced by suggestions and impressions from the world, forgetting what their present state makes them capable of doing now. Thus, by living the lives, the habits, the actions and the desires of others they are led into a life not their own; in other words, they are misplaced.

The master mind is never misplaced because he does not live to do what others are doing, but what he himself wants to do now, and he wants to do only that which is conducive to real life, a life worth while, a life that steadily works up to the very highest goal in view.

The average mind requires a change of environment before he can change his thought. He has to go somewhere or bring into his presence something that will suggest a new line of thinking and feeling. The master mind, however, can change his thought whenever he may so desire. A change of scene is not necessary because the master mind is not controlled by external conditions or circumstances. A change of scene will not produce a change of thought in his mind unless he so elects for the master mind changes his thoughts, ideas, or desires by imaging upon the mind the exact likeness of those new ideas, new thoughts, or new desires that have been selected.

The secret of the master mind is found wholly in the intelligent use of the imaging faculty, for man is as he thinks, and his thoughts are patterned after the predominating mental images, whether those images are impressions suggested from without or impressions formed by the mind through original thinking. When any individual permits his thoughts or desires to be formed in the likeness of impressions received from without he will be more or less controlled by environment. He will be largely in the hands of circumstances and fate, but when he proceeds to transform into an original idea every impression received from without and incorporates that idea into a new mental image he will use environment as a servant, thereby placing fate in his own hands.

Every object that is seen will produce an impression upon the mind according to the degree of mental susceptibility. This impression will contain the nature of the object of which it is a representation. Thus, the nature of that object will be reproduced in the mind, and what has thus entered the mind will be expressed more or less throughout the entire human system. Therefore, the individual who is susceptible to suggestions and external impressions will reproduce in his own mind and system conditions that are similar in nature to almost everything that he may see, hear or feel. He will, in consequence, be a reflection of the world in which he lives. He will think, speak and act as his surroundings may suggest. He will flow with the stream of his circumstances and he will be more or less of an automaton instead of a well individualized character.

However, every person who permits himself to be largely and continually affected by suggestions is more or less of an automaton, and accordingly is more or less in the hands of fate. So, therefore, in order to reverse matters and place fate in his own hands he must proceed to make intelligent use of suggestions instead of blindly following such desires and thoughts as his surroundings may suggest.

We are all surrounded constantly by suggestions of every description, because everything has the power to suggest something to us, provided we are susceptible. But there is a vast difference between permitting ourselves to be susceptible to all sorts of suggestions and by training ourselves to use intelligently all those impressions that suggestions may convey c The average student of suggestion not only ignores this difference, but encourages susceptibility to suggestion by constantly emphasizing the belief that it is suggestion that controls the world.

But if it is really true that suggestion does control the world, we want to learn how to so use suggestion that its indiscriminate control of the human mind may decrease steadily. For the human mind must not be controlled by anything, and this we can accomplish, not by teaching people how to use suggestion for the purpose of affecting their minds, but in using every impression conveyed by suggestion in the reconstruction of our own minds.

Suggestion is a part of life because everything has the power to suggest and all minds are open to impressions. Suggestion, therefore, is a necessary factor, and a permanent factor in our midst. But the problem is to train ourselves to make intelligent use of the impressions received, instead of blindly following the desires produced by such impressions, as the majority do.

To carry out this idea never permit the objects discerned by the senses to reproduce themselves in your mind against your will. Form your own ideas about what you see, hear or feel and try to make those ideas superior to what was suggested by the objects discerned. When you see evil do not form ideas or mental impressions that are similar to that evil. And do not think of the evil as bad, but try to understand the forces that are back of all evil, forces that are good in themselves though misdirected in their present state.

By trying to understand the nature that is back of evil or adversity you will not form bad ideas, and therefore will feel no bad effects from experiences that may seem undesirable. At the same time you will think your own thought about the experience, thereby developing the power of the master mind.

Surround yourself as far as possible with those things that suggest the superior, but do not permit such suggestions to determine your thought about the superior. The superior impressions that are suggested by superior environments should be used by yourself in forming still more superior thought. For if you wish to be a master mind your thought must always be higher than the thought your environment may suggest, no matter how ideal that environment may be.

Every impression that enters the mind through the senses should be worked out and should be made to serve the mind in its fullest capacity. In this way the original impression will not reproduce itself in the mind, but will become instrumental in giving the mind a number of new and superior ideas. To work out an impression try to see through its own nature; that is, look at it from every conceivable point of view while trying to discern its causes, tendencies, possibilities and probable effects.

Use your imaging faculty in determining what you want to think or do, what you are to desire and what your tendencies are to be. Know what you want, then image those things upon the mind at all times. This will develop the power to think what you want to think. And he who can think what he wants to think can be what he wants to be. In this connection it is most important to realize that the principal reason why the average person has not realized his ideals is because he has not learned to think what he wants to think. He is too much affected by the suggestions that are all about him. He imitates his environment too much, following desires and tendencies that are not his own, and therefore he is misled and misplaced.

Whenever you permit yourself to think what persons, things, conditions or circumstances may suggest, you are not thinking what you yourself want to think. You are following borrowed desires instead of your own desire. Therefore you will drift into strange thinking, thinking that is entirely different from what you have planned and that maybe directly opposed to your present purpose, need or ambition.

To obey the call of every suggestion and permit your mind to be carried away by this, that or the other, is to develop the tendency to drift; your mind will wander, the power of concentration will weaken and you will become wholly incapable of really thinking what you want to think. In fact one line of constructive thinking will have scarcely begun when another line will be suggested, and you will leave the unfinished task to begin something else, which will in turn be left incomplete. Nothing, therefore, will be accomplished.

To become a master mind you must think what you want to think, no matter what your surroundings may suggest. And you must continue to think what you want to think until each particular purpose is carried out and every desired idea realized. Make it a point to desire what you want to desire and impress that desire so deeply upon consciousness that it cannot possibly be disturbed by such foreign desires as environment may suggest. Then continue to express that desire in all thought and action until you get what you want.

When you know that you have the right desire do not permit anything to influence your mind to change. Take such influences and suggestions and convert them into the desire that you have already decided upon, thereby giving that desire additional life and power. However, you should never close your mind to impressions from without. Try to gain valuable impressions from every source, but do not follow those impressions. Use them in building up your own system of original thought. Then think what you want to think under every circumstance and so use every impression you receive that you will gain still greater power to think what you want to think. Thus you will readily and surely develop the master mind.

Yesterday, we added the Classic Success Manual The Law and the Word by Thomas Troward to The Success Manual Free Download Library. In the accompanying post, we mentioned that Genevieve Behrend, a New Thought author in her own right, was the only personal student of Judge Troward. Given the heady writing of Judge Troward, Ms. Behrend's writings - which are de facto Troward teachings - are refreshingly less difficult to read and understand.

Your Invisible Power is probably Ms. Behrend's most popular book and is included in The Success Manual Free Download Library. I have found certain passages in this work by Ms. Behrend as truly capturing the sum and substance of Troward, most notably, the concept of "Principle Over Precedent." In sum, Principle Over Precedent means that the past has absolutely no bearing, no relevance on what you can accomplish today and tomorrow UNLESS you allow it. Excerpts from Your Invisible Power by Genevieve Behrend

The exercise of the visualizing faculty keeps your mind in order, and attracts to you the things you need to make life more enjoyable in an orderly way. If you train yourself in the practice of deliberately picturing your desire and carefully examining your picture, you will soon find that your thoughts and desires proceed in a more orderly procession than ever before. Having reached a state of ordered mentality, you are no longer in a constant state of mental hurry. Hurry is Fear, and consequently destructive.

In other words, when your understanding grasps the power to visualize your heart’s desire and hold it with your will, it attracts to you all things requisite to the fulfillment of that picture by the harmonious vibrations of the law of attraction. You realize that since Order is Heaven’s first law, and visualization places things in their natural order, then it must be a heavenly thing to visualize.

Everyone visualizes, whether he knows it or not. Visualizing is the great secret of success. The conscious use of this great power attracts to you multiplied resources, intensifies your wisdom, and enables you to make use of advantages which you formerly failed to recognize.

We now fly through the air, not because anyone has been able to change the laws of Nature, but because the inventor of the flying machine learned how to apply Nature’s laws and, by making orderly use of them, produced the desired result. So far as the natural forces are concerned, nothing has changed since the beginning. There were no airplanes in “the Year One,” because those of that generation could not conceive the idea as a practical, working possibility. “It has not yet been done,” was the argument, “and it cannot be done.” Yet the laws and materials for practical flying machines existed then as now.

Troward tells us that the great lesson he learned from the airplane and wireless telegraphy is the triumph of principle over precedent, the working out of an idea to its logical conclusion in spite of accumulated contrary testimony of all past experience.

With such an example before you, you must realize that there are still greater secrets to be disclosed. Also, “That you hold the key within yourself, with which to unlock the secret chamber that contains your heart’s desire. All that is necessary in order that you may use this key and make your life exactly what you wish it to be, is a careful inquiry into the unseen causes which stand back of every external and visible condition. Then bring these unseen causes into harmony with your conception, and you will find that you can make practical working realities of possibilities which at present seem but fantastic dreams.”

In visualizing, or making a mental picture, you are not endeavoring to change the laws of Nature. You are fulfilling them. Your object in visualizing is to bring things into regular order, both mentally and physically. When you realize that this method of employing the Creative Power brings your desires, one after another, into practical, material accomplishment, your confidence in the mysterious but unfailing law of attraction, which has its central power station in the very heart of your word-picture, becomes supreme. Nothing can shake it. You never feel that it is necessary to take anything from anybody else. You have learned that asking and seeking have, as their correlatives, receiving and finding.

When you first begin to visualize seriously, you may feel, as many others do, that someone else may be forming the same picture you are, and that, naturally, would not suit your purpose. Do not give yourself any concern about this. Simply try to realize that your picture is an orderly exercise of the Universal Creative Power specifically applied. Then you may be sure that no one can work in opposition to you. The universal law of harmony prevents that. Endeavor to bear in mind that your mental picture is Universal Mind specifically exercising its inherent powers of initiative and selection.

God, or Universal Mind, made man for the special purpose of differentiating Himself through him.

Nothing can prevent your picture from coming into concrete form except the same power which gave it birth – yourself.

* * * * * * *

We all possess more power and greater possibilities than we realize, and visualizing is one of the greatest of these powers, it brings other Possibilities to our observation.

Your personal advance in evolution depends on your right use of the power of visualizing, and your use of it depends on whether you recognize that you, yourself, are a particular center through and in which the Originating Spirit is finding ever new expression for potentialities already existing within Itself. This is evolution; the continual unfolding of existing through outwardly invisible things.

The seventh and great thing to remember in visualizing is that you are making a mental picture for the purpose of determining the quality you are giving to the previously undifferentiated substance and energy, rather than to arrange the specific circumstances for its manifestation. That is the work of Creative Power itself. It will build its own forms of expression quite naturally, if you will allow it, and save you a great deal of needless anxiety. What you really want is expansion in a certain direction, whether of health, wealth or what not, and so long as you get it – as you surely will, if you confidently hold to your picture – what does it matter whether it reaches by some channel which you thought you could count upon, or through some other of whose existence you had no idea. You are concentrating energy of a particular kind for a particular purpose. Keep this in mind and let specific details take care of themselves, and never mention what you are doing to anyone.

Never forget that every physical thing, whether for you or against you, was a sustained thought before it was a thing.

Thought, as thought, is neither good nor bad; it is Creative Action and always takes physical form. Therefore, the thoughts you dwell upon become the things you possess or do not possess.

This first concrete fruition of my study of Mental Science as expounded by Troward’s book had come by a careful following of the methods he had outlined. In this connection, therefore, I can offer to the reader no better gift than to quote Troward’s book, “The Edinburgh Lectures,” from which may be derived a complete idea of the line of action I was endeavoring to follow. In the chapter on Causes and Conditions he says:

“To get good results we must properly understand our relation to the great impersonal power we are using. It is intelligent, and we are intelligent, and the two intelligences must co-operate.

“We must not fly in the face of the law expecting it to do for us what it can only do through us; and we must therefore use our intelligence with the knowledge that it is acting as the instrument of a greater intelligence; and because we have this knowledge we may and should cease from all anxiety as to the final result.

“In actual practice we must first form the ideal conception of our object with the definite intention of impressing it upon the Universal Mind – it is this thought that takes such thought out of the region of mere casual fancies – and then affirm that our knowledge of the Law is sufficient reason for a calm expectation of a corresponding result, and that therefore all necessary conditions will come to us in due order . . .

You may feel the necessity for improvement in your finances, and wonder how this increase is to be brought about, when there seems suddenly to come from within the idea itself, the realization that everything – even money – had its birth in thought, and your thoughts turn their course. You simply hold to the statement or affirmation that the best, and all there is, is yours. Since you are able to capture ideas from the Infinite through the instrument of your intuition, you let your mind rest upon that thought, knowing full well that this very thought will respond to itself. Your inhibition of all doubt and anxiety enables the reassuring ideas to establish themselves and attract to themselves “I can” and “I will” ideas, which gradually grow into the physical form of the desire in your mind.

In the conscious uses of the Universal Power to reproduce your desires in physical form, three facts should be borne in mind: First – All space is filled with a Creative Power. Second – This Creative Power is amenable to suggestion. Third – It can only work by deductive methods.

As Troward tells us, this last is an exceedingly important point, for it implies that the action of the ever-present Creative Power is in no way limited by precedent. It works according to the essence of the spirit of the principle. In other words, this Universal Power takes its creative direction from the word you give it. Once man realizes this great truth, the character with which this sensitive, reproductive power is invested becomes the most important of all his considerations. It is the unvarying law of Creative Life Principle that “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” If you realize the truth that the Creative Power can be to you only what you feel and think it to be, it is willing and able to meet your demands.

Troward says, “If you think your thought is Powerful, your Thought is Powerful.” “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” is the law of life, and the Creative Power can no more change this law than an ordinary mirror can reflect back to you a different image than the object you hold before it.

Put on your thinking caps, folks.

We are going to get a bit deep, spiritual and metaphyscial. Today's addition to The Success Manual FREE Download Library is the Classic work by Judge Thomas Troward, The Law and the Word. Certainly not your typical easy reading material, Judge Troward is widely recognized as the Father of the New Thought movement and a heavy hitter with respect to the Law of Attraction.

I admit it - I don't even understand all of Troward's writings. But, I do know one thing (okay, maybe a couple of things). First, every time I read Troward, I do come away with a deeper understanding of his teachings. Second, Genevieve Behrend was his only personal student, and Your Invisible Power and Attaining Your Desires are two trememdous books by Ms. Behrend based on the teachings of Troward. Third, my former personal Success Coach, Bob Proctor, cited Troward as one of his most read authors - in the top three, to be exact. So, there must be something with this guy.

Consider the following quote from The Law and the Word, also located at the top of this page:

Troward's works are all based, in part, on the concept of an "ether" or "etheric substance." Our thoughts, words and actions travel throughout the ether of the Universe, and, as such, are subject to the Laws of the Universe. Many other New Thought writers, and further including many other authors to write years later such as Raymond Holliwell, often discuss the "ether." And, the "ether" is discussed as scientific fact or a widely-accepted scientific principle.

But what is the "ether?" And, does it exist, as scientific fact?

Normally, I would not delve into such deep subjects, but I think this is a point of clarification that must be addressed. That is because the "ether" is no longer a widely accepted scientific fact, principle or theory - it has long since been discarded.

Does that discredit Troward and all other Success, Philosophical and Metaphysical writers, teachers and sages? No, not at all! But, since there is no "ether" - in the true, scientific sense - and because Troward's writings seek to establish the bridge between Science and Spirituality, let's get this out of the way here and now.

Instead of thinking of the Universe as being comprised of "ether," think of it as being comprised of whatever you wish. For, it doesn't really matter. Whether comprised of dust, gas, matter, dark matter, light matter, anti-matter, energy . . . that inquiry is not particularly relevant to the sum and substance of the written word of Troward's teachings.

So, what happened to the whole concept of the "ether," a principle once accepted by the scientific community? Read my little explanation following the Download Section where I give it my best!

The "Ether" - The Scientific Explanation

What is the “Ether?”

Ether may be defined as a hypothetical nonmaterial medium once supposed to fill all space. The idea that such a medium is required for the propagation of electromagnetic radiation, however, is no longer tenable.

In order to understand the concept of the “ether,” it might be helpful to undertake a very brief examination of the concepts of light, electromagnetism, gravity, space, time and relativity (Don’t worry – this will be short and sweet – and FUN!)

Let’s start with Sir Isaac Newton and his Principia Mathematica, published in 1687. In that revolutionary publication, Newton articulated several laws that rocked the civilized world (and the Church). From those laws, Newton deviated from universally-accepted principles established by Aristotle, including the now accepted law that there is no unique standard of rest.

Here is how that principle applies in practice. Suppose a train is traveling east at 50 mph. As it travels, two twin brothers – named Tim and Tom – riding the train decide to play catch with a baseball in one of the passenger cars. Mom is sleeping, and fortunately, there are no other passengers in that car.

Both boys are talented baseball pitchers for their age and each can throw a 50 mph fast ball.

The train speeds down the track in a precise due east direction. Tim is located in the far western end of the passenger car, while Tom is situated in the far eastern end of the passenger car.

Tim (west end) pitches first, throwing the baseball at exactly 50 mph to his brother Tom (east end) who catches the ball.

Or, was the pitch not 50 mph?

To the brothers on the train, yes it was 50 mph, as measured by the conveniently located radar gun mounted on the inside wall of the passenger car.

However, at the moment that Tim pitched the ball, the train whizzed past a train station where several people were standing on an outside platform and who witnessed (very quickly, mind you) Tim pitching the ball to Tom.

The speed of the pitch to the people standing on the platform, relative to them, was not 50 mph. It was 100 mph! That is because the train was moving 50 mph (east) and the pitch – moving in the same east direction of the train’s progress – was also 50 mph. The speed of the pitch to the bystanders is therefore 100 mph (50 mph + 50 mph = 100 mph).

Now, suppose it is Tom (east end) pitching a 50 mph fastball to Tim (west end). This time, the direction of the pitch is not in the direction that the train is moving, but precisely opposite of that direction.

Again, inside the passenger car, the pitch is precisely 50 mph, as measure by the conveniently mounted radar gun. Yet, to the bystanders standing on the station platform who witness this event as the train rolls by, it is totally different.

The speed of this pitch relative to the bystanders? 0 mph!! As the train passes by at 50 mph and they witness Tom pitch the ball at 50 mph in the opposite direction, the ball literally stands still – motionless – in the air! So, how does Tim catch a “motionless” ball? Easy – he moves forward at 50 mph and “catches” the motionless ball before it can drop to the car floor!

The result of Newton’s work is the principle that “rest” is not absolute; it is relative.

In 1676, Danish astronomer Ole Christensen Roemer discovered that light travels at a finite, but very high speed. While his calculations were off slightly, the modern accepted value of the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second.

Years later, in 1865, British physician James Clerk Maxwell articulated a proper theory of the propagation of light. In sum, Maxwell’s theory predicted that radio or light waves should travel at a certain fixed speed. However, this created a problem. A fixed speed relative to what? Remember, Newton’s laws had dispelled the concept of “absolute” rest.

As a result, the concept of an “ether” was created. Radio or light waves would always travel at a certain, fixed speed relative to the “ether.”

As explained in his book, A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking explains it thusly:

Maxwell’s theory predicted that radio or light waves should travel at a certain fixed speed. But Newton’s theory had got rid of the idea of absolute rest, so if light was supposed to travel at fixed speed, one would have to say what that fixed speed was to be measured relative to. It was therefore suggested that there was a substance called the “ether” that was present everywhere, even in “empty” space. Light waves should travel through the ether as sound waves travel through the air, and their speed should therefore be relative to the ether. Different observers, moving relative to the ether, would see light coming toward them at different speeds, but light’s speed relative to the ether would remain fixed.

Makes sense, doesn’t it? Think of the train example with twins Tim and Tom. The speed of the pitch is relative to the observer, whether on the train or on the station platform.

But, let’s see what happens if we really speed that pitch up and use the galaxy as our model, instead of a train.

Tom, much older now, is an astronaut on the International Space Station orbiting the Earth and is doing a spacewalk. Having much improved his pitching skills, he decides to do a little experiment. He takes a baseball, winds up with all his might, and fires the meanest fastball at our Sun’s nearest star, Alpha Centauri, a mere 4.37 light years away (actually, Alpha Centauri is a binary star system, but we will overlook that for purposes of this explanation).

The speed of his fastball: the speed of light, 186,000 miles per second. Not taking account what one of Newton’s other laws would mean to Tom’s fate for having rocketed such a fastball pitch, and further, not taking into account what Mr. Einstein said as to the mass of the baseball as it approaches the speed of light – it becomes infinite at that speed – the baseball flies at the speed of light toward our nearest star.

Light traveling from Alpha Centauri radiates outward at the same finite speed: 186,000 miles per second. Meaning that light from the star is traveling toward the baseball at 186,000 miles per second while the baseball is traveling toward the light at the same speed of 186,000 miles per second.

Using the Tim, Tom and Train example – and keeping in mind the concept of the Alpha Centauri light and the baseball are each traveling toward each other through the “ether” at the same fixed speed of 186,000 miles per second, one may readily conclude that, relative to each other, the light and the baseball are closing in on each other at 372,000 miles per second (186,000 mps + 186,000 mps + 372,000 mps). Right?

Wrong-oh!

Regardless of whether you are the baseball or the wave of light from Alpha Centauri, the speed of the other traveling to you (or at which you are closing in on each other, from either perspective) is still only 186,000 miles per second. Really. Ask French mathematician Henri Poincaré. Or, of course, Albert Einstein.

But, how can this be? Well, it can be if we accept two postulates: 1) there is no “ether,” and 2) we must abandon the idea of absolute time.

Guess what happens to time if you are traveling on that baseball? It stops. It must stop if the speed of the light traveling to you from Alpha Centauri is to remain constant at 186,000 miles per second. Why? Because, 1) the speed of light is finite and absolute; regardless of how fast or in what direction you are traveling, light is traveling to you at 186,000 miles per second, and 2) nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. So, if you are sitting on that baseball and the light from Alpha Centauri is traveling towards you at 186,000 miles per second (and nothing can travel faster than that), time MUST stop.

And so, we travel into Einstein’s theory of relativity and other mind-boggling goodies. But, the bottom line is that there is no “ether.”

So, was Newton wrong? NO. Newton’s laws work great on the earthly, human, practical scale, but fail miserably at the larger, grand universe scale. Einstein, and others, discovered laws that work tremendous in explaining the faster, larger and infinite scale of the universe, but don’t work too well down here. And, of course, there is quantum mechanics and particle physics, with their own set of laws. Science has been pursuing a “unified” theory to explain EVERYTHING from sub-atomic particles to black holes ever since.

The Mental Equivalent Lectures are comprised of two lectures presented by Dr. Fox in 1943 to Unity School of Christianity in Kansas City, Missouri. Spiritually-based, the metaphysical theme of Dr. Fox's presentation is that for every concrete element in the physical, outer world, there is a Mental Equivalent in the Mental and Spiritual inner world. Obviously, we have been here before, but Dr. Fox has a great voice of distilling such subjects to relative simplicity.

Fox became known as one of the most influential New Thought writers of the Twentieth Century. In his career, he even came to know the prolific New Thought writer and master sage, Judge Thomas Troward (stay tuned, folks, Judge Troward is up next for Download Library). Fox discovered that he had spiritual healing powers in his teens and never looked back, pursuing the obvious path God had laid before him.

The Hidden Power by Dr. Emmet Fox

Strange as it may seem to you, there exists a mystic power that is able to transform your life so thoroughly, so radically, so completely, that when the process is completed your own friends would hardly recognize you, and, in fact, you would scarcely be able to recognize yourself. You would sit down and ask yourself: "Can I really be the man or woman that I vaguely remember, who went about under my name six months or six years ago? Was I really that person? Could that person have possibly been me?" And the truth will be that while in one sense you are indeed the same person, yet in another sense you will be someone utterly different.

This mystic but intensely real force can pick you up today, now, from the midst of failure, ruin, misery, despair – and in the twinkling of an eye, as Paul said, solve your problems, smooth out your difficulties, cut you free from any entanglements, and place you clear, safe, and happy upon the highroad of freedom and opportunity.

It can lift you out of an invalid’s bed, make you sound and well once more, and free to go out into the world to shape your life as you will. It can throw open the prison door and liberate the captive. It has a magical healing balm for the bruised or broken heart.

This mystic Power can teach you all things that you need to know, if only you are receptive and teachable. It can inspire you with new thoughts and ideas, so that your work may be truly original. It can impart new and wonderful kinds of knowledge as soon as you really want such knowledge – glorious knowledge – strange things not taught in schools or written in books. It can do for you that which is probably the most important thing of all in your present stage: it can find your true place in life for you, and put you into it too. It can find the right friends for you, kindred spirits who are interested in the same ideas and want the same things that you do. It can provide you with an ideal home. It can furnish you with the prosperity that means freedom, freedom to be and to do and to go as your soul calls.

This extraordinary Power, mystic though I have rightly called it, is nevertheless very real, no mere imaginary abstraction, but actually the most practical thing there is. The existence of this Power is already well known to thousands of people in the world today, and has been known to certain enlightened souls for tens of thousands of years. This Power is really no less than the primal Power of Being, and to discover that Power is the Divine birthright of all men. It is your right and your privilege to make your contact with this Power, and to allow it to work through your body, mind, and estate, so that you need no longer grovel upon the ground amid limitations and difficulties, but can soar up on wings like an eagle to the realm of dominion and joy.

But where, it will naturally be asked, is this wonderful, mystic Power to be contacted? Where may we find it? And how is it brought into action? The answer is perfectly simple – This Power is to be found within your own consciousness, the last place that most people would look for it. Right within your own mentality there lies a source of energy stronger than electricity, more potent than high explosive; unlimited and inexhaustible. You only need to make conscious contact with this Power to set it working in your affairs; and all the marvelous results enumerated can be yours. This is the real meaning of such sayings in the Bible as "The Kingdom of God is within you"; and "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and all the rest shall be added."

This Indwelling Power, the Inner Light, or Spiritual Idea, is spoken of in the Bible as a child, and throughout the Scriptures the child symbolically always stands for this. Bible symbolism has its own beautiful logic, and just as the soul is always spoken of as a woman, so this, the Spiritual Idea that is born to the soul, is described as a child.

The conscious discovery by you that you have this Power within you, and your determination to make use of it, is the birth of the child. And it is easy to see how very apt the symbol is, for the infant that is born in consciousness is just such a weak, feeble entity as any new-born child, and it calls for the same careful nursing and guarding that any infant does in its earliest days. After a time, however, as the weeks go by, the child grows stronger and bigger, until a time comes when it can well take care of itself; and then it grows and grows in wisdom and stature until, no longer leaning on the mother’s care, the child, now arrived at man’s estate, turns the tables, and repays its debt by taking over the care of its mother. So your ability to contact the mystic Power within yourself, frail and feeble at first, will gradually develop until you find yourself permitting that Power to take your whole life into its care.

The life story of Jesus, the central figure of the Bible, perfectly dramatizes this truth. He is described as being born of a virgin, and in a poor stable, and we know how he grew up to be the Savior of the world. Now, in Bible symbolism, the virgin soul means the soul that looks to God alone, and it is this condition of soul in which the child, or Spiritual Idea, comes to birth. It is when we have reached that stage, the stage where, either through wisdom or because of suffering, we are prepared to put God really first, that the thing happens.
