When it comes to attaining Success, Prosperity and Wealth, it is easy to become impatient. We read and study the great Success Manual Classics, we listen to the great Teachers, Instructors, Speakers and Coaches of our time, we listen, study and watch various programs and courses, and yet, when we fail to realize instant Success or manifest instant Prosperity, it is so easy to fall into the trap of either doubting our own (or God's) abilities, or simply giving up. Patience, in every respect, is key.

Somethings - particularly Success, Prosperity and Wealth - rarely sprout and mature overnight. We must work at it. And, we must not fall into the trap of believing that it can be attained or achieved in short periods of time and with relatively little effort.

We must also be prepared to do our fair share of fumbling, stumbling and running into temporary defeats. That is all part of the process, and the most Successful individuals are those who "failed" the most.

Last night I picked up the phenomenal Success Manual "The Secret of the Ages" by Robert Collier, which I have read several times over and more.

As is my habit, I randomly selected a chapter to read. My selection was Chapter XV, entitled, "The Master of Your Fate."

I don't know the last time I read this particular passage, but it sure resonated with me last night. It was as if I had never read it before, yet I know I have as the chapter was filled with notes, underlining, highlighting, etc.

Well, the chapter had such an impact on me that I couldn't wait to reproduce it as a Success Passage today. And, so, here it is.

Where will you be at 65? Five men in six at the age of 65 are living on charity. Just one in twenty is able to live without working at 65.

That is what the American Bankers Association found when it took one hundred healthy men at 25 and traced them to 65.

These hundred were healthy to start with. They all had the same chance for success. The difference lay in the way they used their MINDS. Ninety-five out of one hundred just do the tasks that are set them. They have no faith in themselves – no initiative – none of the courage that starts things. They are always directed or controlled by someone else.

At 65, where will you be? Dependent or independent? Struggling for a living – accepting charity from someone else – or at the top of the heap?

“I Am the Master of My Fate”

Until you have learned that, you will never attain life’s full success. Your fate is in your own hands. You have the making of it. What you are going to be six months or a year from now depends upon what you think today.

So make your choice now: Are you going to bow down to matter as the only power? Are you going to look upon your environment as something that has been wished upon you and for which you are in no way responsible? Or are you going to try to realize in your daily life that matter is merely an aggregation of protons and electrons subject entirely to the control of Mind, that your environment, your success, your happiness, are all of your own making, and that if you are not satisfied with conditions as they are, you have but to visualize them as you would have them be in order to change them?

The former is the easier way right now – the easy way that leads to the hell of poverty and fear and old age.

But the latter is the way that brings you to your Heart’s Desire.

And merely because this Power of Universal Mind is invisible, is that any reason to doubt it? The greatest powers of Nature are invisible. Love is invisible, but what greater power is there in life? Joy is invisible, happiness, peace, contentment. The radio is invisibles yet you hear it. It is a product of the law governing sound waves. Law is invisible, yet you see the manifestation of different laws every day. To run a locomotive, you study the law of applying power, and you apply that law when you make the locomotive go.

These things are not the result of invention. The law has existed from the beginning. It merely waited for man to learn how to apply it. If man had known how to call upon Universal Mind to the right extent, he could have applied the law of sound waves, the law of steam, ages ago. Invention is merely a revelation and an unfoldment of Universal Wisdom.

That same Universal Wisdom knows millions of other laws of which man has not even a glimmering. You can call upon It. You can use that Wisdom as your own. By thinking of things as they might be instead of as they are, you will eventually find some great Need. And to find a need is the first step towards finding the supply to satisfy that need. You’ve got to know what you are after, before you can send the Genie-of-your-Mind a-seeking of it in Universal Mind.

The Acre of Diamonds

You remember the story of the poor Boer farmer who struggled for years to glean a livelihood out of his rocky soil, only to give it up in despair and go off to seek his fortune elsewhere. Years later, coming back to his old farm, he found it swarming with machinery and life – more wealth being dug out of it every day than he had ever dreamed existed. It was the great Kimberley Diamond Mine!

Most of us are like that poor Boer farmer. We struggle along under our surface power, never dreaming of the giant power that could be ours if we would but dig a little deeper – rouse that great Inner Self who can give us more even than any acre of diamonds.

As Orison Swett Marden put it:

“The majority of failures in life are simply the victims of their mental defeats. Their conviction that they cannot succeed as others do robs them of that vigor and determination which self confidence imparts, and they don’t even half try to succeed.

“There is no philosophy by which a man can do a thing when he thinks he can’t. The reason why millions of men are plodding along in mediocrity today, many of them barely making a living, when they have the ability to do something infinitely bigger, is because they lack confidence in themselves. They don’t believe they can do the bigger thing that would lift them out of their rut of mediocrity and poverty; they are not winners mentally.

“The way always opens for the determined soul, the man of faith and courage.

“It is the victorious mental attitude, the consciousness of power, the sense of mastership, that does the big things in this world. If you haven’t this attitude, if you lack self confidence, begin now to cultivate it.

“A highly magnetized piece of steel will attract and lift a piece of unmagnetized steel ten times its own weight. Demagnetize that same piece of steel and it will be powerless to attract or lift even a feather’s weight.

“Now, my friends, there is the same difference between the man who is highly magnetized by a sublime faith in himself, and the man who is de-magnetized by his lack of faith, his doubts, his fears, that there is between the magnetized and the de-magnetized pieces of steel. If two men of equal ability, one magnetized by a divine self confidence, the other demagnetized by fear and doubt, are given similar tasks, one will succeed and the other will fail. The self confidence of the one multiplies his powers a hundred-fold; the lack of it subtracts a hundred-fold from the power of the other.”

Have you ever thought how much of your time is spent in choosing what you shall do, which task you will try, which way you shall go? Every day is a day of decision. We are constantly at crossroads, in our business dealings, our social relations, in our homes, there is always the necessity of a choice. How important then that we have faith in ourselves and in that Infinite intelligence within. “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.” “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

In this ever-changing material age, with seemingly complex forces all about us, we sometimes cry out that we are driven by force of circumstances. Yet the fact remains that we do those things which we choose to do. For even though we may not wish to go a certain way, we allow ourselves to pursue it because it offers the least resistance.

“To every man there openeth

A way, and ways, and a way.

And the high soul climbs the high way,

And the low soul gropes the low:

And in between, on the misty flats,

The rest drift to and fro.

But to every man there openeth

A high way and a low, And every man decideth

The way his soul shall go.”

Now, how about you? Are you taking active control of your own thought? Are you imaging upon your mind only such things as you want to see realized? Are you thinking healthy thoughts, happy thoughts, successful thoughts?

The difference between the successful man and the unsuccessful one is not so much a matter of training or equipment. It is not a question of opportunity or luck. It is just in the way they each of them look at things.

The successful man sees an opportunity, seizes upon it, and moves upward another rung on the ladder of success. It never occurs to him that he may fail. He sees only the opportunity, he visions what he can do with it, and all the forces within and without him combine to help him win.

The unsuccessful man sees the same opportunity, he wishes that he could take advantage of it, but he is fearful that his ability or his money or his credit may not be equal to the task. He is like a timid bather, putting in one foot and then drawing it swiftly back again – and while he hesitates some bolder spirit dashes in and beats him to the goal.

Nearly every man can look back – and not so far back either with must of us – and say, “If I had taken that chance, I would be much better off now.”

You will never need to say it again, once you realize that the future is entirely within your own control. It is not subject to the whims of fortune or the capriciousness of luck. There is but one Universal Mind and that mind contains naught but good. In it are no images of Evil. From it comes no lack of supply. Its ideas are as numberless as the grains of sand on the seashore. And those ideas comprise all wealth, all power, all happiness.

You have only to image vividly enough on your subconscious mind the thing you wish, to draw from Universal Mind the necessary ideas to bring it into being. You have only to keep in mind the experiences you wish to meet, in order to control your own future.

When Frank A. Vanderlip, former President of the National City Bank, was a struggling youngster, he asked a successful friend what one thing he would urge a young man to do who was anxious to make his way in the world. “Look as though you have already succeeded,” his friend told him. Shakespeare expresses the same thought in another way – “Assume a virtue if you have it not.” Look the part. Dress the part. Act the part. Be successful in your own thought first. It won’t be long before you will be successful before the world as well.

David V. Bush, in his book “Applied Psychology and Scientific Living,” says:

“Man is like the wireless operator. Man is subject to miscellaneous wrong thought currents if his mind is not in tune with the Infinite, or if he is not keyed up to higher vibrations than those of negation.

“A man who thinks courageous thoughts sends these courageous thought waves through the universal ether until they lodge in the consciousness of someone who is tuned to the same courageous key. Think a strong thought, a courageous thought, a prosperity thought, and these thoughts will be received by someone who is strong, courageous and prosperous.

“It is just as easy to think in terms of abundance as to think in terms of poverty. If we think poverty thoughts we become the sending and receiving stations for poverty thoughts. We send out a ‘poverty’ mental wireless and it reaches the consciousness of some poverty-stricken ‘receiver.’ We get what we think.

“It is just as easy to think in terms of abundance, opulence and prosperity as it is to think in terms of lack, limitation and poverty.

“If a man will raise his rate of vibration by faith currents or hope currents, these vibrations go through the Universal Mind and lodge in the consciousness of people who are keyed to the same tune. Whatever you think is sometime, somewhere, received by a person who is tuned to your thought key.

“If a man is out of work and he thinks thoughts of success, prosperity, harmony, position and growth, just as surely as his thoughts are things – as Shakespeare says – someone will receive his vibrations of success, prosperity, harmony, position and growth.

“If we are going to be timid, selfish, penurious and picayunish in our thinking, these thought waves which we have started in the universal ether will go forth until they come to a mental receiving station of the same caliber. ‘Birds of a feather flock together,’ and minds of like thinking are attracted one to the other.

“If you need money, all you have to do is to send up your vibrations to a strong, courageous receiving station, and someone who can meet your needs will be attracted to you or you to him.”

When you learn that you are entitled to win – in any right undertaking in which you may be engaged – you will win. When you learn that you have a right to a legitimate dominion over your own affairs, you will have dominion over them. The promise is that we can do all things through the Mind that was in Christ.

Universal Mind plays no favorites. No one human being has any more power than any other. It is simply that few of us use the power that is in our hands. The great men of the world are in no wise SUPER Beings. They are ordinary creatures like you and me, who have stumbled upon the way of drawing upon their subconscious mind – and through it upon the Universal Mind. Speaking of Henry Ford’s phenomenal success, his friend Thomas A. Edison said of him – “He draws upon his subconscious mind.”

The secret of being what you have it n you to be is simply this: Decide now what it is you want of life, exactly what you wish your future to be. Plan it out in detail. Vision it from start to finish. See yourself as you are now, Being those things you have always wanted to do. Make them REAL in your mind’s eye – feel them, live them, believe them, especially at the moment of going to sleep, when it is easiest to reach your subconscious mind – and you will soon be seeing them in real life.

It matters not whether you are young or old, rich or poor. The time to begin is NOW. It is never too late. Remember those lines of Appleton’s:

“I knew his face the moment that he passed

Triumphant in the thoughtless, cruel throng –

I gently touched his arm – he smiled at me –

He was the Man that ‘Once I Meant to Be!’

“Where I had failed, he’d won from life, Success;

Where I had stumbled, with sure feet he stood;

Alike – yet unalike – we faced the world,

And through the stress he found that life was good.

“And I? The bitter wormwood in the glass,

The shadowed way along which failures pass!

Yet as I saw him thus, joy came to me –

He was the Man that Once I Meant to Be!

“We did not speak. But in his sapient eyes

I saw the spirit that had urged him on,

The courage that had held him through the fight

Had once been mine. I thought, ‘Can it be gone?’

“He felt that unasked question – felt it so

His pale lips formed the one-word answer, ‘No!’

Too late to win? No! Not too late for me –

He is the Man that Still I Mean to Be!”

I STRONGLY believe in The Habit of Dong More Than Paid For - of providing GREATER value and service in exchange for the fees or payment received. I have personally practiced this law for many, many years and I can attest to its amazing Power. Frankly, it works - and it works quite well.

There are two primary laws invoked when one provides greater value (of service or goods) in exchange for the payment received therefor. First, is the Law of Compensation; second, is the Law of Increasing Returns. Both Laws are premised upon the "Law of Laws" - the Law of Cause and Effect.

The Law of Compensation holds that whenever you render value through service, you will be justly compensated. Perhaps you may not be compensated immediately, but you will be compensated - justly - in kind and in time. What you sow, you reap. This Law works day in and day out in our lives, whether we know it or not, and applies not just to rendering service for payment, but to every aspect of our lives. It is pure "cause and effect."

The Law of Increasing Returns applies specifically to instances when we render service (or sell product) of GREATER VALUE than what we receive in exchange as payment for that service or product. When we do this, an amazing thing happens: we receive back not just the "greater value" of the service we rendered, but we receive back even more!

Let's use a simplistic - but accurately demonstrative - example.

Suppose you agree to perform a particular service to a client or customer and the fair value for your service is $500. You and the client/customer agree upon the compensation and you commence the project.

Now, if you completed the project, and in doing so, rendered $500 worth of service, you would have performed exactly as mutually agreed upon and your compensation would be a fair exchange of value. Both parties receive exactly that to which was bargained for and mutually agreed upon.

But, suppose in copmpleting the project, you perform some extra service - service above and beyond what the client/customer is expecting. You "go the extra mile," as some like to say. And, in doing so, you expect no additional compensation from the client/customer. As Professor Hill states, you are "doing more than paid for."

When all is said and done, you perform an extra $200 worth of service for your client/customer. She notices what you have done and is ECSTATIC! But, she can only pay you the $500, and rightly, that is all you should expect - for that was the agreed upon exchange of value for rendering your service.

Under the Law of Compensation, you can expect to receive back - at some time - the $200 in value for the extra service that you rendered. Perhaps your client/customer will, voluntarily, send you the money without you asking. Or, it may come in another form. The bottom line is that under the Law of Compensation, you WILL receive back that $200.

However, the Law of Increasing Returns is also working, and under that Law, you will receive back MORE than the extra $200 in service that you rendered. You may receive back, perhaps, $500 or even $1,000 in value. That client may have been so pleased with the additional value of service that you provided that she tells her clients and a month later you pick up new clients offering you more money!

One cannot predict precisely how the Law of Increasing Returns will manifest the increasing returns, but it does. I know - I have personally experienced it hundreds of times and it works - like clockwork.

In fact, it works so well, that the Law is incorporated into my business model. Some think that I am nuts - that I should be charging every penny (and more) for everything that I do. But, experience has taught me that is not the way to build goodwill.

Provide Value above and beyond what is expected. And, provide Value FIRST before you are engaged for your services.

If you follow these rules, I absolutely guarantee spectacular results.

Here is what Professor Hill states on the subject:

We will now analyze the law upon which this entire lesson is founded, namely –

THE LAW OF INCREASING RETURNS!

With this vital “tip” from Nature, which we may gather from the wheat fields, let us proceed to appropriate this Law of Increasing Returns and learn how to apply it to the service we render, to the end that it may yield returns in excess of and out of proportion to the effort put forth.

When you do only that for which you are paid, there is nothing out of the ordinary to attract favorable comment about the transaction; but, when you willingly do more than that for which you are paid, your action attracts the favorable attention of all who are affected by the transaction, and goes another step toward establishing a reputation that will eventually set the Law of Increasing Returns to work in your behalf, for this reputation will create a demand for your services, far and wide.

If you carry out this experiment in the proper attitude of mind, you will discover that which all others who have become familiar with the law upon which it is based have discovered; namely, that –

You can no more render service without receiving compensation than you can withhold the rendering of it without suffering the loss of reward.

Finally, after what has seemed an eternity and a relentless deluge of challenges and obstacles, we are putting the finishing touches and running the final tests on The Success Manual Prosperity Library web site, featuring The Wattles Prosperity Bible, The Law of Attraction Prosperity Bible and The Wattles Quotable Bible.

If I was not a Student of Success - as was the case in my prior life - I would have called this venture "a nightmare." The Wattles Prosperity Bible

A Five Volume Compilation of the Works of Wallace D. Wattles

When Wallace Delois Wattles was growing up in the post-Civil War America, the country was undergoing major changes in the political, economic and social arenas.

While the South was rebuilding its battered infrastructure, the North, where Wattles lived, was prospering, both industrially and agriculturally. This period, known as the Second Industrial Revolution, began in the mid-19^th century, with the growth and expansion of steel, petroleum, as well as chemical and electrical sectors; railways and steam ship industry also thrived in the still- young nation.

In fact, by the time the 19^th century came to a close and the new one dawned, corporate giants such as U.S. Steel and General Electric spawned the legendary tycoons by the names of Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew P. Mellon, and J.P. Morgan, among other renowned and often notorious wheelers and dealers of that era.

The extravagant lifestyles of these super-rich industrialists and financiers – which prompted Mark Twain to coin the phrase “Gilded Age” to describe the excesses of the wealthy people in the second half of the 1800s – did not, however, reflect the grim living conditions of the working class. Historical records show that in 1890, when Wattles was 30, 11 million of America’s 12 million families earned less than $1,200 a year, with the average annual income of $380, well below the poverty line.

Wallace Delois Wattles: Law of Attraction Sage, Author and Teacher and Master of Success and Prosperity. Mr. Wattles' teachings were a driving force behind Rhonda Byrne's book, "The Secret." How much so? The first time she read "The Science of Getting Rich," she cried!

Not much is known today about Wattles’ life and family, but from the information that is available to us we can surmise that he was born into that modest – not to say poverty-stricken – milieu like the vast majority of his countrymen.

We cannot say with any certainty that he was inspired by the well-heeled tycoons of the era, but we do know that he turned the art of getting rich into a science.

His philosophy about wealth is succinctly summed up in this quote: “Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.”

Putting together Wattles’ biography is a challenging task because very little is known about him. Whether this dearth was a matter of modesty and humility or merely poor record-keeping we cannot guess, but anyone attempting to research Wattles’ life will hit a brick wall riddled with many gaps and holes. For instance, his schooling remains a mystery, as does his family. We know that he had a daughter, Florence, but have no information about his wife. We also know that early on he worked on a farm and later as a lecturer in Indiana, as well as in some capacity at a Methodist Church, but have no clue about any other jobs he might have held. We know he died young – at 51 – of “frail” health, but possess no details of what illness he suffered from. He was a prolific writer, publishing scores of articles, essays and books. Many of the articles and essays were published as compilations; others as single articles. However, specific details as to many of his published works are few.

What little we do know about his childhood and later life can be gleaned from the letters Florence wrote to Wattles’ publisher, Elizabeth Towne. From those letters we can construct a sketchy portrait of a compassionate and caring man of profound convictions, and a prolific writer who believed his ideas would transform people’s lives.

Although Wattles remains – given the scarcity of information about him – somewhat of an enigma, he wrote some of the most powerful self-help books ever published. As a matter of fact, the young farm boy grew up to be a trailblazer in the area of wealth-building, personal empowerment and success, a field that, while in its infancy during Wattles’ lifetime, blossomed as the “New Thought” era, and which today is a billion-dollar industry. Indeed, the “self improvement” market in the U.S. alone is estimated as worth more than $13.9 billion in 2010.[1]

In a way, Wallace Delois Wattles’ life is a quintessential rags-to-riches story.

He was born in 1860 in Illinois, and later lived in Indiana. According to the 1880 US Federal Census, young Wallace was probably the only child of a gardener and a housewife. He lived with his parents on a farm in Nunda Township, McHenry County, Illinois. With little formal education, he spent his early years toiling as a farm laborer. In those days, life on a farm was dismal, requiring long hours of backbreaking labor. Even though new farm equipment was invented and introduced during that period, horses, oxen and people still provided the power that fueled the machines.

Eking out a living from a farm, which relied heavily on weather-dependant crops, was a challenge then, as it is, though maybe to a lesser degree, now. We do not know for sure whether this was the only work Wattles did in his youth, but his life at the time is reported to have been one of poverty, hardship, and failure. We will never know for certain, but perhaps this strife had sparked Wattles’ desire to become successful and rich and to understand proper and healthy living.

One of Florence’s messages to Mrs. Towne provides some insight into what drove her father to overcome his humble beginnings and ultimately led him to pen a series of highly successful self-help books: “For years his life was cursed by poverty and the fear of poverty. He was always scheming and planning to get for his family those things, which make the abundant life possible.”

In 1896, the 36-year-old Midwesterner attended a “convention of reformers” in Chicago, where he met George Davis Herron. Two years Wattles’ junior, Herron was a controversial Congregational Church minister and professor of Applied Christianity at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he attracted attention for his radical religious views, namely a new philosophy called Christian Socialism. A movement that originated in the mid-19th-century Europe, it combined the fundamentals of Socialism with the principles of Christianity as a means of helping the poor.

Florence wrote to Mrs. Towne that her father caught Herron’s social vision. “I shall never forget the morning he came home,” she related. “It was Christmas. Mother had put her last dollar into a cuff box and we had placed it beneath an evergreen branch which served for our Christmas tree and which we had illuminated with tallow candles and strung with popcorn. Finally Father came. With that beautiful smile he praised the tree, said the cuff box was just what he had been wanting - and took us all in his arms to tell us of the wonderful social message of Jesus, the message which he later embodied in ‘A New Christ.’ From that day until his death he worked unceasingly to realize the glorious vision of human brotherhood.”

According to Florence, at one time her father had held a position in the Methodist Church, but was fired because of his “heresy,” possibly the Christian Socialism views, which were not quite compatible with the mainstream Christianity. Two of his books, “A New Christ” and “Jesus: The Man and His Work” focused on Christianity from a Socialist perspective. As a matter of fact, Wattles was so involved in the movement, that he twice ran as a Socialist candidate for two public offices: in the Eighth Congressional District in 1908, and two years later, for the office of Prosecuting Attorney for Indiana’s Madison County’s 50th court district. He lost both elections, but Florence became a delegate to the Socialist Party National Committee in 1912 and 1915.

Another new spiritual movement that Wattles embraced with zeal and conviction, and which had, in large measure, influenced his thinking and writing, was called New Thought. This movement started to emerge in the second half of the 19^th century, at about the same time as Christian Socialism.

This was a turning point for Wattles, the moment that likely re-defined and re-directed his life to some degree.

The movement, which remains active to this day, promotes the idea that all of life’s circumstances and events, whether positive or negative, be they physical or mental in nature, originate in the mind as a consequence of our thinking and beliefs, and, therefore, “right thinking” can change our lives positively.

Like many thinkers and philosophers from a variety of churches and religious denominations, and even some secular groups and individuals as well, Wattles became a proponent of these metaphysical tenets relating to the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, creative visualization, and other essential life forces that formed the basis of his beliefs and writings. Today the self-improvement and personal growth industry is a thriving, multi-billion-dollar sector, but in Wattles’ time it was still in its nascent stages. The New Thought movement, however, marked an important milestone in the development of the self-help phenomenon.

Because of the unbridled optimism, positive energy, and personal empowerment inherent to the New Thought principles, Wattles, along with his contemporaries like Napoleon Hill, Frank Channing Haddock, Thomas Troward, William Walker Atkinson, and, a bit later, Dale Carnegie, had become one of the earliest self-help pioneers – people who believed in improving themselves and all the aspects of their lives by harvesting their spiritual and inner strengths. Essentially, the mind can achieve whatever it can conceive.

Wattles’ brand of motivational self-improvement philosophy is best expressed in this quote of his: “The scientific use of thought consists in forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want; in holding fast to the purpose to get what you want; and in realizing with grateful faith that you do get what you want.”

Wattles discovered an outlet for his ideas in Nautilus, a magazine for New Thought writers founded in 1898 by Elizabeth Towne. In it, Wattles found a fitting forum to advance his ideas and foster his writing skills. As Florence explained: “When we came to Elwood (Indiana) three years ago, Father began a Sunday night lectureship in Indianapolis. This was our only source of income. Later he began to write for Nautilus and to word out his own philosophy. He wrote almost constantly. Then it was that he formed his mental picture. He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality of power, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision.”

Wattles applied the New Thought principles to his own life through personal experimentation. For example, he tested some of the health and food fads fashionable at that time, such as the “No Breakfast Plan,” before encouraging his readers to try out his theories on themselves.

How a poor man with little education was able to form such a far-reaching vision and bring it to fruition with numerous books remains a mystery. What is certain is that his works, at least by some assessments, are among the most powerful personal improvement books ever written.

While Wattles authored numerous works, his best-known are likely the trilogy of “The Science of Being Rich” (1910), “The Science of Being Well” (1910) and “The Science of Being Great” (1911). All three are fitting examples of self-improvement and personal success theories he had become known for, as demonstrated in Florence’s letter to Mrs. Towne: “The supreme faith of the man never left him; never for a moment did he lose confidence in the power of the master Intelligence to right every wrong and to give to every man and woman his or her share of the good things of life.”

The above quote is a paragraph from Chapter 2 of Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich,” a forerunner of every personal finance and self-help book ever written. His statement that this pragmatic text is “intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward,” rings as true in the second decade of the 21^st century as it did when it was first published 100 years ago.

Incredibly, there exists today million dollar self-help businesses founded solely on “The Science of Getting Rich.”

While many people believe that amassing wealth is a matter of hard work, luck, or a combination of both, Wattles promoted a more scientific approach. “There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic,” he famously noted. “There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches, and once these laws are learned and obeyed by anyone, that person will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

“The Science of Getting Rich,” still widely read and highly acclaimed today, laid ground for “The Science of Being Great,” in which Wattles stated that “Greatness is equally inherent in all, and may be manifested by all. Every person may become great.”

The inspirational and motivational message is also clear in “The Science of Being Well,” where Wattles writes that the work is directed at “those who want health, and who want a practical guide and handbook, not a philosophical treatise. It is an instructor in the use of the universal Principle of Life, and my effort has been to explain the way in so plain and simple a fashion that the reader, though he may have given no previous study to New Thought or metaphysics, may readily follow it to perfect health. While retaining all essentials, I have carefully eliminated all non-essentials; I have used no technical, abstruse, or difficult language, and have kept the one point in view at all times.”

The question that arises is whether Wattles successfully applied his New Thought beliefs and theories on how an average person can become rich, happy and healthy regardless of his or her circumstances to his own life. From Florence’s correspondence to Mrs. Towne it would appear that he did. Before his death in 1911 at 51, Florence reported that “he made lots of money, and had good health, except for his extreme frailty.”

There is no information on how many “regular” people who read Wattles’ works in the past century had been influenced by his message. We do know, however, that the Australian New Thought writer Rhonda Byrne said her inspiration for the hit 2006 movie, “The Secret,” as well as the same-titled book, came from Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich.” When she first opened the book in 2004, Byrne relates on her website, “Something inside of me had me turn the pages one by one, and I can still remember my tears hitting the pages as I was reading it. It gave me a glimpse of The Secret and it was like a flame inside of my heart.”

So in the end, the little-known life of Wallace Delois Wattles was, in many ways, a quintessentially American story of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps, succeeding against all odds, and influencing the lives of others. In the words of his daughter Florence, “His life was truly the powerful life.”

I found a copy of the book and started reading it and was immediately struck by the beauty of this work. "The Door of Everything" by Ruby Nelson really is a beautiful book.

Now, I must confess that I have not read it all - only the first two chapters. And, of course, while compiling and editing the ebook, I have had the opportunity to absorb the material. So, perhaps, it is possible that the remainder of the book - the portions that I have not read - may not continue the same dance as what I have already read. But, I doubt it.

My intent is to finish The Door of Everything at first chance. I suppose I could easily read it in an evening, after all it is not that lengthy, but that would defeat the purpose. Beautiful written works, like any beautiful work - such as a beautiful painting or a beautiful landscape painted by our Creator - are to be savored. They nourish our Being. They are food for the Soul and Spirit. Most likely, it may take me some time to complete The Door of Everything. I do want to enjoy it.

Recently, we added "The Law and the Word" by Thomas Troward to The Success Manual Free Download Library. Judge Troward, a brilliant writer and perhaps "the Godfather of New Thought," is not easy reading by any means (at least not for me). As a result, despite his legacy with regard to the New Thought movement and the impact of his teachings on modern day Success Masters (e.g., Bob Proctor, Anthony Robbins, etc.), we have been a little hesitant to bring his works into our online fold.

Were we wrong. Hundreds of copies of The Law and the Word have already been downloaded.

Which brings us to today's addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library: "The Creative Process in the Individual" by Thomas Troward. Out of all of his works, I personally find Creative Process easier to assimilate and of immediate practical value. Yes, it has its esoteric qualities as do all of Troward's work; but, it does provide an understandable dissertation on exactly what the title of the work states: The Creative Process in the Individual.

As we noted in our previous post on Troward's work, a primary focus of Creative Process is, as Troward expressly states, "The triumph of principle over precedent, the working out of an Idea to its logical conclusions in spite of the accumulated testimony of all past exerpience to the contrary." In other words, even though the Law of Cause and Effect (the "Law of Laws" according to Emerson) is in full force and effect, we need to be mindful that what happened yesterday has absolutely no bearing on what we do today, unless we allow it. Each day is a fresh start. Yesterday's "failures" belong to yesterday.

The human race has been able to advance as a result of the Triumph of Principle Over Precedent. Each day brings new Opportunity for Growth - and Grow we do (to the extent we allow ourselves). And, Growth of any kind ultimately brings Success and purifes the Soul.

A Cautionary Note: The Creative Process in the Individual, like all Success Manuals - but particularly so here - is NOT a book that one simply picks up, reads and puts back on the book shelf to collect dust. It IS a Success Manual, to be read and studied with purpose and intent. The conveyed words of Wisdom are to be savored, absorbed into our consciousness and analyzed. To approach this work any other way is a waste of time and energy.

Lastly, please keep in mind my prior explanation on the "ether" as you read this book to avoid any confusion.

Now, roll up your sleeves and get to work!

Truly, this is one of THE best Success-Spirituality books that I have ever read. Actually, I only just read it as I compiled and edited the work, but I intend to now read it again and study it thoroughly. I found that many of Russell's concepts - including some verbatim quotes - have been used by Bob Proctor in his teachings, courses and lectures. I am sure many more Success Masters also rely upon this rare Success Manual Classic as well.

God does not run after you when you leave His House. He lets you work out your own salvation. He lets you find yourself. He knows nothing outside Himself by which to divide or to separate Himself. Success Strategy: Abandon Your Comfort Zone, Face the Fear and Do It Afraid

[Publisher's Note: Recently, we featured a guest Post by Myles Miller entitled, Success Strategy: The Power of Conquering FEAR! Today's Post is a great follow-up to Myles' article, as we examine this thing called our "Comfort Zone," why we use it, how it prevents us from Advancement, Growth and Success, and how we can face down the irrational Fear that keeps us locked in the self-imposed prison of the Comfort Zone. I look forward to any Comments, so please feel free to chime in and add your two cents worth!]

1. Why We Fail

Why do most people fail to achieve their Goals? Why do most people fail to attain Success? Why do most people fail to acquire Wealth? There are many reasons, but one reason stands out ahead of the others. Indeed, it is obvious: The main reason most people Fail is because – they QUIT!

I have said it many times before and I will note it again: If attaining Success was easy, many more would Succeed; if acquiring Wealth was easy, many more would be Wealthy. The fact of the matter is that many who wish for Success or Wealth either never really get off the ground trying in sincere effort or they simply Quit – usually shortly after beginning their quest.

Persistence, a necessary ingredient to attain Success or acquire Wealth, may be defined as “sustained effort in the face of all odds or adversity.” Of Persistence, Napoleon Hill states in his classic Success Manual, Think and Grow Rich, that it “is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting Desire into its monetary equivalent.” (See page 312 of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill (1937 Version) Success Manual Strategist Edition 2010). If one is truly Persistent, as the above definition points out, Quitting is NOT an option.

Yet, how often do we see people – ourselves included – embark on a journey to achieve Success or attain a Goal and then Fail? Thousands and thousands of times. I am not referring to temporary defeat, which even the most ardent Successful experience – as they necessarily must – in order to Succeed. ALL Success requires a certain level of temporary defeat, set backs and obstacles that must be overcome. (See Post: Success Key No. 5: Embrace Obstacles, the Stepping Stones to Success). I am referring to FAILURE. Failure (Quitting) is fundamentally different than temporary defeat.

No one really Fails unless and until one Quits.

Consider how many individuals make so-called “New Year’s Resolutions,” only to “break” the resolutions within months, weeks, days or even hours after the start of the New Year. Initially, there is great Enthusiasm – usually before the New Year begins – but because of flawed internal programming, the resolution cannot be kept. And, so, in an effort to save face, fool themselves and fool others, a litany of excuses is developed to justify Quitting. Quitting the pursuit of one’s honest and sincere Desire is never justified; you are only Quitting on yourself. Temporary defeat and even retreat, on the other hand, is sometimes necessary (or even unavoidable) as sound strategy.

But, this all still begs the question – why, then, do people Quit?

2. The Real Reason: FEAR

The real reason people Quit – and, therefore, fail to Succeed – is FEAR.

I am not referring to the natural “fight or flight” form of Fear which God instilled in the human species as an involuntary system of survival. Rather, the type of Fear to which I refer is the subtle, irrational Fear that keeps us stuck, prevents us from Growing, and thus, thwarts any meaningful attempts at attaining Achievement, Success or Prosperity.

By way of example, if you narrowly escaped a potentially fatal car accident, or awoke one night to find an intruder in your home, or jumped at the sound of an alarm because your office building was on fire, you better have Fear. For it is this type of Fear that provides your mind and body with the adrenaline, hormones, corticosteroids and other body chemicals critical to your survival. Without these nature helpers, your ability to overcome the danger you face would be lessened and your chances of survival greatly diminished. Fear, produced by these substances is a good thing. This type of Fear keeps you alive.

But there is another kind of Fear that lurks within our conscious and subconscious minds that is not natural; and, worse, in the long run, it does us harm. This form of Fear is not a product of involuntary and instantaneous gland production and it does not immediately transform us into super-human survival mode. This type of Fear is self-induced, pernicious and irrational. It works in stealth mode and its objective is simple: to keep Change and Growth at bay and keep you locked in your “Comfort Zone.” This type of Fear causes a slow, painful death.

Understanding the abnormal form of Fear is critical to Advancement, Growth, and ultimately, Success.

3. The Comfort Zone

The so-called “Comfort Zone” is a hazard to your well-being. Yes, you heard that right.

You see, your Comfort Zone loves you more than you love it. It wants you to stay, make yourself at home and never leave. And, it achieves this objective by making your internal intellectual, emotional and spiritual home nice and comfy cozy. Ironically, while natural Fear fosters survival, unnatural, abnormal Fear inhibits survival!

The latter, therefore, cannot be an expression of Nature or of our Universal Creator, for Nature always seeks further and fuller expression of itself, i.e., Growth. And, the source of this insidious form of Fear? US – we do it to ourselves.

Our Comfort Zones: The internal hiding places that imprison us and prevent us from Growth, Advancement and Success. When we venture outside of our Comfort Zone, we must expect to experience a respectful level of discomfort as we embark into unchartered territories.

It wasn’t always this way. We were all born with a God-given, natural ability to wander (and wonder) out of our personal Comfort Zone. Watch young children play and you will immediately see this as fact. They don’t know what is and what is not “dangerous,” and therefore act as little danger magnets, taking risks that take our breath away. They explore their world with reckless abandon, absorbing every experience into their little minds. They have no self-imposed limiting beliefs of themselves. They just are. They are true little Zen masters.

But, what happens as they grow and begin to form beliefs about their world – particularly on emotional issues and matters? They learn to become irrationally “afraid.”

My youngest son is almost four years old. When he was two, he was Mr. Fearless. The dark, being alone, climbing stairs and ladders – whatever – he did and he wasn’t afraid. Fast forward two years later, and he is now afraid of certain things that previously he didn’t even know existed. What happened?

His mind developed, and with it, the ability to scare himself – irrationally – through self-imposed beliefs (of course, he doesn’t know that). The dark two years ago is the same dark as today. The events themselves did not change – he changed. The way he interprets his world changed, and in accordance, his behavior followed suit. As a result, his fear of the dark now prevents him from doing (being, doing and having more) what previously was a “no brainer” (no pun intended).

As adults, we have created so many abnormal, unnatural and irrational fears in our head that the only safe haven left is our Comfort Zone. Most people “don’t want any problems” and prefer to just “punch the clock and make a living.” They just want to wait out their lives in a nice easy fashion with no risk of any kind. In other words, they never, ever venture outside of their Comfort Zone – for any reason. Bob Proctor would say “Well, why are they here?”

4. Growth and Advancement Require Abandonment of the Comfort Zone

If you are ever going to advance in life and seek to be, do and have more, you must – necessarily – leave the cozy confines of your Comfort Zone. There is no other way. Period.

Think about it. If your goal is to achieve something that you have never accomplished in life, for example, a very ambitious financial Goal, you must venture into uncharted territory. You don’t have a choice. Why? Because that is where the Goal is. If there is one place where the Goal is not, it is in your Comfort Zone. If it was, guess what? You would already have it.

As Jim Rohn once stated, “If you want more of what you’ve been getting, keep doing what you’ve been doing.” If you want something different – especially if it is a big something different – then you must do things differently – very differently. In other words, you must be prepared to change and indeed change by taking the appropriate internal and external Action – Action that you have never taken before. This can be very unsettling. This is what holds people back. This is why most people Quit.

If you have sincerely set your sights on an ambitious Goal in new territory, this will require that you do things unfamiliar. Examples may include (but are certainly not limited to) meeting new people, doing new things, writing proposals, speaking to groups, researching, planning, meeting, adopting a solid work ethic, working twice as much as you do now, getting up early, going to bed late, organizing, concentrating, imposing self-discipline, acquiring self-confidence, giving up certain recreations and STOP WATCHING TELEVISION EVERY NIGHT. If you have not been doing these things and such activities are new to you, this will require you to step outside of your Comfort Zone.

WARNING: Your Comfort Zone doesn’t like these things and will use every trick in the playbook to keep you in place!

The loftier your Goal, then the greater the distance you must expect to travel from your Comfort Zone. Just as the size of your Success is in direct proportion to the size of your Belief, the size of your Success is in direct proportion to the distance you must travel from your Comfort Zone. Everyone’s Comfort Zone is different, so the roads and distances to travel are different for everyone. Regardless of your point of origin, however, be assured that higher intellectual faculties must come to bear. You must raise your creative levels higher than you have ever pushed before. This isn’t easy; the easy way is to retreat back to your Comfort Zone, plop on the sofa and turn on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” (or whatever).

Humans, generally speaking, do not like change, particularly any change that requires us to leave our Comfort Zones. When required to do so, we act like a dog whose master has rearranged the furniture in the room. The poor creature lost its favorite comfy spots and doesn’t know what to do. Somebody messed with its Comfort Zone!

Leaving your Comfort Zone increases anxiety and doubt, both of which induce Fear – the bad kind of Fear.

5. The Bad News: Enthusiasm is NOT Enough

Simple garden variety Enthusiasm is not enough to overtake and subdue the gravitational effects of the Comfort Zone. Yes, Enthusiasm is a great attitude (state of mind), but standing alone, it is simply insufficient.

Consider again the New Year’s Resolution scenario. The vast majority of individuals who engage in the annual tradition of making such resolutions usually do so with unbridled Enthusiasm – a good thing, agreed. They get “pumped” and soundly resolve that this is the year to do (or refrain from doing, depending on your perspective) this, that and the other thing (to steal a chapter title from How to Grow Success, The Success Manual’s latest addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library). And, they mean it, they really mean it.

But, Enthusiasm is all they have in their arsenal. Being an attitude, a state of mind, Enthusiasm can come and go like the wind on a moment’s notice. Without the proper mental conditioning, Enthusiasm can dissipate faster than a sinking soufflé. I can hear it now – pssssssssss . . . .

So, what happened? Whence cometh and goeth Enthusiasm?

Doubt, worry, anxiety . . . all of the psychological trappings used by your Comfort Zone made an appearance and Enthusiasm bolted out the back door.

Often, all it takes is until the next morning before doubt creeps in: “I don’t know . . .” “I can’t do that . . .” “Who am I kidding . . .” “I’ll start tomorrow instead . . .” “Maybe I’ll start next week . . .” “Maybe next month, when the weather is warmer . . .” “Maybe next year, when . . .”

And the excuse parade is in full swing.

Nothing has changed, except the individual’s resolve. Circumstances have not changed. The individual has not changed. In fact, the individual has remained steadfastly the same. The demons of old conditioning, habit and thinking – as embodied in the resolver’s personal Comfort Zone – have exerted their gravitational pull to keep the person from experiencing the uncomfortable emotions of doubt, anxiety, and thus, Fear. In order to quell those uneasy feelings, retreat is made to the Comfort Zone. Just the thought of postponing the start date of the resolution by one month brings immediate relief. Whew!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

As noted by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Of what use to make heroic vows of amendment, if the same old lawbreaker is to keep them?”

Dr. Maxwell Maltz stated that “We act, behave and feel according to what we consider our Self-Image to be and we do not deviate from this pattern.” Well, the same analogy can be made with our Comfort Zone: “We act, behave and feel according to what we have established as our Comfort Zone and we do not deviate from this pattern.”

But, what are we really afraid of? The answer may be startling: Fear of GROWTH.

If you want to Grow, and thus Succeed, you MUST be willing to experience a significant and proportionate amount of discomfort, i.e., Fear. Fear and Growth go hand in hand. You cannot separate the two.

6. The Good News: You Are NOT Your Comfort Zone

Unfortunately, over time we begin to identify our Comfort Zone as ourselves. “I am shy, I could never do that.” Or, “I am not good with people.” Or, “I get tired easy and need to sleep 18 hours a day.” Not only are these self-imposed beliefs extremely limiting, but worse, we use them to define who we ARE, thereby creating a false Self-Image. And then, as Dr. Maltz points out, we do not deviate from that pattern.

The strangest aspect of this process is that we tend to complain about what we have or don’t have, but yet, we undertake no effort to deviate from the pattern of our self-imposed Self-Image, as defined by the limitations of our Comfort Zone – a Comfort Zone that we created. Where is the logic in that? Yet, this is how the vast majority of people live their lives!

The fact of the matter is that you can be, do and have anything YOU DESIRE. You are not defined by your Comfort Zone unless you allow yourself to be so defined. God certainly does not identify and define you by your self-imposed beliefs of personal lack and limitation, so why do you?

At most, your Comfort Zone is only a hiding PLACE that you use to prevent yourself from venturing out – from Growing. Like any physical place, you can leave the mental and emotional location of the Comfort Zone anytime you choose. God gave you Free Will; use it. As Bob Proctor has repeated many times, “It’s your movie, you can make it any way you want.”

So, remember these critical FACTS:

You are not your Comfort Zone.
At best, your Comfort Zone is merely a place.
Because it is a place, you can choose to leave your Comfort Zone anytime you Desire.
You will leave your Comfort Zone – and thus, experience the Growth that God intended you to experience – when your Desire to Grow, Advance and Succeed is GREATER than your Desire to remain in the cushy, comfy confines of the Comfort Zone (Fear avoidance).
Universal Law: As long as you stay in your Comfort Zone, NOTHING will ever change. Period. It’s IMPOSSIBLE.

7. Success Strategy

So, what can be done to defeat the death-pull of the Comfort Zone? How does one defeat the irrational, abnormal Fear that accompanies the journey out?

Actually, quite a bit and we can write volumes on the subject. One particular action is more powerful than any other and cognitive behavioral psychologists have been using this method for decades. But, first it is always important to examine – and understand – the “Fear Factor.”

Understand that Fear – the bad kind of Fear – is almost always the result of ignorance. Yes, that’s right – ignorance. For if you had the knowledge, understanding and requisite levels of awareness of what is to be gained, what is required, and the true levels of risk of venturing out of the Comfort Zone, there would be no hesitation to leave immediately. We hold ourselves captive through our own ignorance.

When you find yourself trapped in your Comfort Zone, ask yourself – and be real, real honest – what is the absolute worst that could happen if I pursue this new Ideal (Goal, Objective, etc.)? Seek the Truth, for it shall set you free.

Let’s use a simple example for demonstration (and a scenario that many of us have experienced in life):

Boy likes girl (Desire). Boy wants to go out with girl (Desire). As a result, boy wants to ask girl out (Aspiration). Boy thinks about asking girl out (continued Aspiration), but that would mean he actually must take Action and ask her (leaving Comfort Zone). Boy is afraid (Fear induced merely by the thought of leaving Comfort Zone). Boy doesn’t ask girl out (retreat to Comfort Zone). But, boy really, really likes girl. (Desire increases). Boy is still afraid (Fear), but realizes that if he doesn’t ask girl out (stays in Comfort Zone), he will never go out with girl (excellent observation). On the other hand, he could ask girl out and she could say “no” (worst case scenario). Or she could say “yes” (icing on the cake, for the real goal here is asking her out, although boy probably doesn’t see it that way). Rightly realizing that he has nothing to lose (overcoming ignorance and increasing level of awareness), boy asks out girl (takes Action, overcomes Fear). The boy’s Desire to go out with the girl was greater than his Desire to remain “safe” in his Comfort Zone.

So, here we have a young gentleman totally stricken and immobilized by Fear just over the thought of asking a girl out. How absurd! Yet, how many of us have actually lived this same experience. Be honest. We’ve all been there in some capacity, probably many times.

Yet, what does the worst case scenario represent in this example? Nothing more than a temporary defeat – that’s all. If she says “no,” it’s not the end of the world, not the end of his life, not the end of anything. To the extent that he takes a denial and extrapolates and interprets that as meaning anything more than the simple fact she said no, then he is doing it to himself. But that is another story for another day.

Now, let’s go back to that single most powerful Action step to overcome Fear. It was actually mentioned in our example above. Did you catch it? It is so obvious, you might have missed it.

All the boy needed to do in order to overcome this particular Fear of asking the girl out was to simply go ahead and ask her out. That’s it. Once he asks, regardless of the outcome, the Fear is gone. He stepped out of his Comfort Zone and he defeated Fear, and he accomplished this by increasing his level of awareness, overcoming his Fear-based ignorance and understanding that he had nothing to lose. There was, after all, no downside to asking her out.

And, while he may not realize it, the real goal here was taking Action and asking out the girl. Why? If she says “yes,” then he gets to have his cake and eat it too. If she says “no,” he has still conquered his Fear and the next time he wants to ask out a girl (or even the same one), it will be easier. He already ventured out of his Comfort Zone into unchartered territory. The second time out, it will not be so unfamiliar.

As the Nike Company would say, “Just do it.” Or, as Paul Martinelli would say, “Do it afraid.”

Nothing is more powerful to overtake the insidiousness nature of the Comfort Zone and instill self-confidence than to march forward and face the enemy – in this case, irrational Fear – until it dissipates and completely dissolves away.

If you want to Grow, and thus Succeed, you MUST be willing to experience a significant and proportionate amount of discomfort, i.e., Fear. Fear and Growth go hand in hand. You cannot separate the two. In order to overcome Fear - DO IT AFRAID.

Sometimes, you need to “fake it until you make it,” and when it comes to the irrational Fear that prevents you from leaving your Comfort Zone, faking it is incredibly powerful. (See Success Manual POST: Key Success Strategy: Image Making – Acting “AS IF”).

Shakespeare stated, “Assume a virtue if you have it not.”

And, in The Secret of the Ages (Volume I of The Law of Attraction Prosperity Bible by Princeton Cambridge Publishing Group), Robert Collier states, “Look the part. Dress the part. Be successful in your own thought first. It won’t be long before you will be successful before the world as well.”

In his book Applied Psychology and Scientific Living, David V. Bush says “It is just as easy to think in terms of abundance, opulence and prosperity as it is to think in terms of lack, limitation and poverty.” Reframing this concept to the issue at hand, “It is just as easy to think in terms of doubt, worry, anxiety and fear as it is to think in terms of courage, self-confidence, strength and Success.”

That being the case, let’s always think in terms of courage, self-confidence, strength and Success. Assume the virtue if you have it not.

Always remember that abnormal, unnatural and irrational Fear is a product of ignorance. Come to understand the Truth of venturing outside of your Comfort Zone, and you can face and conquer the enemy. Leaving the safe confines of your Comfort Zone will almost always produce some level of discomfort, but keep in mind: No Fear, No Growth; No Growth, No Fear.

8. Take-Aways

You hold the Key. Unlock the shackles of your Comfort Zone and GROW.

Do it tired.

Do it sick.

Do it afraid.

Just do it.

No excuses.

NO FEAR!

Grow, Baby, Grow!

Over the past 15-20 years or so, I have read literally hundreds of Success Manuals by scores of authors, teachers, sages and speakers. I have listened to tapes, CDs, MP3 files and watched VHS and DVD video presentations on Success, self-improvement and personal development. I have attended seminars, and I have viewed recorded and live presentations on television and via the Internet. And, I now tweet and receive thousands of tweets via Twitter every day.

In my humble opinion, in all of these works, no author is cited, quoted or referred to more often than Ralph Waldo Emerson. My past personal coach and mentor, Bob Proctor, loved to quote Emerson. Incredibly brilliant and understanding of the human mind and condition, Emerson seems to say what needs to be said and what makes so much sense. He is a true philosopher of the ages.

Yet, I never have considered Emerson a "Success" or personal development / self improvement teacher, author or master, probably because he simply isn't. He is a philosopher and life observer (and a major formulator of Transcendentalism). To me, he has always been someone who had an amazing gift for seeing things the way they are - how we live our lives and relate to our world (or should).

Sometimes while reading Emerson, I have one of those moments where I feel like I am experiencing life in a new, different and better way. I am not talking about epiphanies or thunder and lightning experiences, but simple, subtle increases in my levels of awareness where I have a greater appreciation and understanding of what is truly meaningful and what is not. I suppose that is one level of attaining Success. After all, Earl Nightengale defined Success as "the progressive realization of a worthy ideal."

It is in these minor advances that we grow. Rarely does life present us with an enormous growth Opportunity - and when it does, we don't want it, for it usually means we must face something quite dramatic that we would rather not. How often do we refuse real growth Opportunity by retreating to the safety of our comfort zone? Probably too much.

And, so it is, that we have finally made our first entry of Ralph Waldo Emerson to The Success Manual FREE Download Library. Today's addition is "Spiritual Laws" and it comes from Emerson's work "Essays - First Series" first published in 1841. That is a long, long time ago, but the Wisdom of the word is as pure and potent as ever - particularly in today's crazy, crazy world.
