Success Strategy and Mastery Move: Working with the Law of Cause and Effect

We live in a world of “cause and effect.”

Understand and apply the Law of Cause and Effect in your daily actions, and your life will change – dramatically.  Worked correctly, the Law of Cause and Effect can markedly alter the course of your life in the direction that you Desire.  This is a Law that CAN be worked tremendously to your advantage.

Too often, we become so deeply ensconced in the daily busy-ness of our lives that we fail to realize the immense powerful impact that the Law of Cause and Effect plays in the results that we achieve (or fail to achieve).

Make no mistake, however – the Law is always at work.  Whether we consciously work it to our benefit, or whether we neglect it in its entirety, the Law of Cause and Effect operates to shape the Results of our lives.  We can choose, therefore, to work with the Law, or we can choose to ignore it.  Either way, the Law’s force and impact on our lives is still the same.

So, it might be a good idea to revisit this important Success Key.  And, perhaps, re-discover a few refresher points along the way.

Cause and Effect Refresher

The Law of Cause and Effect simply embodies the principle that every state (circumstance) that exists in the Universe is an effect created by an originating cause.  Or, stated conversely, every action is a cause that creates a resulting effect.

Consider the following fact pattern to demonstrate the Law of Cause and Effect (for those well-versed in this Law, please bear with me):

1. I saw or chop a tree (cause) and it falls down (effect).
2. I continue to saw the fallen tree (cause) and I create logs (effect).
3. I split the logs (cause) and I create firewood (effect).
4. I stack the firewood (cause) and I create a firewood pile (effect).
5. I leave the firewood pile sitting outside for one year (cause) and it becomes seasoned firewood (effect).
6. I take a piece of seasoned firewood and throw it into a fire in the fireplace (cause) and it burns (effect).
7. The firewood burns (cause) and the fire produces byproducts of ash, water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other gases (effects), which spew forth from the chimney (further effect).
8. The combustion byproducts of my burning firewood (cause) increase the level of CO2 in the atmosphere (effect); the increased level of CO2 in the atmosphere (cause) creates an increase in the “green house” effect (effect); the increased “green house” effect (cause) results in warmer surface water temperatures in the Arctic Ocean (effect); warmer surface water temperatures in the Arctic Ocean (cause) result in less ice in the winter months (effect); less ice in the Arctic Ocean during the winter months (cause) means that the resident polar bears are unable to complete their migration, which requires a frozen Arctic Ocean (effect) . . . etc.  The cycle goes on and on and on.

The Law of Cause and Effect underlies our human ability to understand and manipulate our environment; the very nature of science and scientific experimentation depends on it.  All scientific theory is proven or disproven through application of the Law of Cause and Effect.  Under scientific experimentation, a particular theory is tested and results (effects) are obtained.  If the theory holds true, under the Law of Cause and Effect, its results (effects) may be reproduced again and again under identical causes (test controls).

The Law of Gravity has been well established under Cause and Effect.

So has Newtown’s Third Law of Motion, which may be stated thusly: for every action (cause), there is an equal and opposite reaction (effect).

The Law of Cause and Effect in Our Lives

Human logic is founded on understanding the Law of Cause and Effect.  So are the circumstances that we presently experience.

In fact, where we are – right now – in our lives is the aggregate effect of all past causes.  As such, the world that we currently experience – our present circumstances – is merely an amalgamation of effects.

In his book, Awaken the Giant Within, Anthony Robbins explains this phenomena as follows:

 . . . the most powerful way to shape our lives is to get ourselves to take action.  The difference in the results that people produce comes down to what they’ve done differently from others in the same situations.  Different actions produce different results.  Why?  Because any action is a set cause in motion, and its effect builds on past effects to move us in a definite direction.  Every direction leads to an ultimate destination: our destiny.

If we Desire a different world tomorrow (effects), then we must change and reestablish the proper course of causes today.  If we Desire to Succeed tomorrow, then all we must do is implement the proper Success Causes today.

Sound simple.  It is.  On a conceptual basis, the fundamentals of the Law are really quite elementary.  On a practical basis, however, the Law takes on much greater sophistication.

Why?

First, it is not always possible to establish a bright line nexus (connection) between all of our causes and all of our effects.  As a result, we cannot conclude with certainty today what our Actions will produce as tomorrow’s Results.

Yes, sometimes it is easy – as in the firewood example, above, when I cut the tree with a saw, the tree WILL fall down.  However, much of what we do, and what we fail to do – while all causes of future effects – are not easy to predict with precision.  In fact, our lives encompass such an intricate web of countless causes and effects – simple and multiple – with intervening variables that most of the time it is virtually impossible to connect a single effect back to a specific single cause.  In our fact pattern scenario, for example, it is hard to see how burning firewood may result in migration issues for polar bears.  (Okay, perhaps today we see a cause and effect, but surely nobody connected the dots one hundred years ago).

In fact, a cause may have many effects.  And, an effect may be the result of multiple causes, each contributing in its own way to the ultimate Result.  And, as Anthony Robbins aptly notes, effects can be causes for further effects.

It does get complicated.

Because we cannot conclude with precision how today’s Actions impact and determine tomorrow’s Results, we must work indirectly and in a general sense.  For example, if we KNEW exactly what Actions today would result – with 100% precision – in a specific financial Success one year from now, well . . .  we would do it . . .  right?

So, attempting to establish an Action-Result nexus in a Cause and Effect context is a difficult proposition – assuming that it can be accomplished.

Second, and what most do not realize, is that it is not just our Actions that are the causes of our Results. 

Indeed, our Thoughts are also causes, and attempts to establish the connection between a particular line of thinking and the results that we experience in our lives as a direct result thereof (Thought-Result nexus) is even more difficult than attempting to establish an Action-Result nexus.  But, as sure as the sun rises tomorrow, our Thoughts shape our lives.  As the Success Manual’s web site tagline succinctly states above: “Achieving Success One Thought at a Time!”

In his Success Manual classic, As A Man Thinketh, James Allen states it perfectly.  The following quotes from Chapter 2, Effect of Thought on Circumstance, are on point:

Man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth.  If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed-seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind.

That circumstances grow out of thought every man knows who has for any length of time practiced self-control and self-purification, for he will have noticed that the alteration in his circumstances has been in exact ratio with his altered mental condition.

The outer world of circumstance shapes itself to the inner world of thought, and both pleasant and unpleasant external conditions are factors, which make for the ultimate good of the individual.  As the reaper of his own harvest, man learns both by suffering and bliss.

Circumstance does not make the man; it reveals him to himself.

Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.

Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.

Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results; bad thoughts and actions can never produce good results.  This is but saying that nothing can come from corn but corn, nothing from nettles but nettles.  Men understand this law in the natural world, and work with it; but few understand it in the mental and moral world (though its operation there is just as simple and undeviating), and they, therefore, do not cooperate with it.

Let a man radically alter his thoughts, and he will be astonished at the rapid transformation it will effect in the material conditions of his life.

A particular train of thought persisted in, be it good or bad, cannot fail to produce its results on the character and circumstances.  A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances.

Re-read that last paragraph again: “A particular train of thought persisted in, be it good or bad, cannot fail to produce its results on the character and circumstances.  A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances.”  That really sums it up – while we cannot directly chose tomorrow’s circumstances, we can choose our thoughts today, and today’s thoughts shape tomorrow’s circumstances.

This statement accurately summarizes the nature of the Law of Cause and Effect and how best to use it to our advantage.

The Law of Cause and Effect by Another Name

The Law of Attraction is based entirely on the Law of Cause and Effect.  And, Emerson has called the Law of Cause and Effect the “Law of Laws.”  It has also been called “Heaven’s First Law.”

We have all heard of “Karma.”  As I understand it, Karma, in Indian religions, is the concept of “action” or “deed,” understood as that which causes the entire cycle of cause and effect (i.e., the cycle called samsãra) originating in ancient India and treated in Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Sikh philosophies. (Anybody care to add some comments here?)

So, what does this all mean and what points can we take away from this discussion to assist us on our Path to Success?

Plenty.

Success Is an Effect

Success is an effect.  Understand and execute the cause(s), and you, too, will Succeed.

In his Success Manual Classic, How to Get What You Want (or, as I like to call it, How to Succeed in Anything), Wallace D. Wattles states the following:

Getting what you want is success; and success is an effect, coming from the application of a cause.  Success is essentially the same in all cases; the difference is in the things the successful people want, but not in the success.  Success is essentially the same, whether it results in the attainment of health, wealth, development or position; success is attainment, without regard to the things attained.  And it is a law in nature that like causes always produce like effects; therefore, since success is the same in all cases, the cause of success must be the same in all cases.

The cause of success is always in the person who succeeds; you will see that this must be true, because if the cause of success were in nature, outside the person, then all persons similarly situated would succeed . . .

It is, therefore, mathematically certain that you can succeed if you will find out the cause of success, and develop it to sufficient strength, and apply it properly to your work; for the application of a sufficient cause can not fail to produce a given effect.  If there is a failure anywhere, of any kind, it is because the cause was either not sufficient or was not properly applied.

The cause of success is some power within you; you have the power to develop any power to a limitless extent; for there is no end to mental growth; you can increase the strength of this power indefinitely, and so you can make it strong enough to do what you want to do, and to get what you want to get; when it is strong enough you can learn how to apply it to the work, and therefore, you can certainly succeed.  All you have to learn is what is the cause of success, and how it must be applied.

Because Success is an effect, in order to Succeed tomorrow, we MUST execute the right causes today that produce Successful results tomorrow.

So, where do we begin?

The Causes of Success

What are the primary causes of the effect of Success?  Well, that is what this site is all about.  That is what each of the books available in our Success Manual Free Download Library is about.  It all begins with Thought – the original Cause of the Effect of Success.

What kind of Thought (cause) results in Success (effect)?

We can start with what Wattles calls “Active Power Consciousness” in his book, How to Get What You Want.

Or, as Anthony Robbins explores in Awaken the Giant Within, “the Power of Decision.”

Or, as Napoleon Hill asserts throughout Think and Grow Rich, the proper “State of Mind.”

In each case, it is Thought.  Sow the right Thoughts – Thoughts of Success – and you will reap Success.  What we Think, we become.

As an excellent starting point, we MUST act as the gatekeeper of our Mind, and bar (and refuse to entertain) thoughts of fear, doubt, worry, failure, negativity, resentment, jealousy, and the like.  Our Mind, as James Allen points out, is like a garden and we are the gardener.  If we don’t plant – in affirmative fashion – Successful Thoughts, then whatever seeds do happen to fall in (random thoughts) will grab hold and overtake our garden.  Regardless of whether, and to what extent, that we tend the Garden of our Mind, it will bring forth, it will produce.  It is only a matter of whether it is useful fruit or useless weeds.

Random gardening is no way to cultivate and harvest a bountiful crop.  Similarly, random thinking is no way to Succeed.  Why leave your Garden to chance?  Tend it carefully!

I strongly urge that you read James Allen's  A Man Thinketh and Wallace D. Wattles' How to Get What You Want every day for the next thirty (30) days.  This is a surefire way to tend your Success Garden well and initiate the proper root causes today in order to achieve the effects of Success tomorrow.

 I STRONGLY believe in The Habit of Dong More Than Paid For - of providing GREATER value and service in exchange for the fees or payment received.  I have personally practiced this law for many, many years and I can attest to its amazing Power.  Frankly, it works - and it works quite well.

There are two primary laws invoked when one provides greater value (of service or goods) in exchange for the payment received therefor.  First, is the Law of Compensation; second, is the Law of Increasing Returns. Both Laws are premised upon the "Law of Laws" - the Law of Cause and Effect.

The Law of Compensation holds that whenever you render value through service, you will be justly compensated.  Perhaps you may not be compensated immediately, but you will be compensated - justly - in kind and in time.  What you sow, you reap.  This Law works day in and day out in our lives, whether we know it or not, and applies not just to rendering service for payment, but to every aspect of our lives.  It is pure "cause and effect."

The Law of Increasing Returns applies specifically to instances when we render service (or sell product) of GREATER VALUE than what we receive in exchange as payment for that service or product.  When we do this, an amazing thing happens: we receive back not just the "greater value" of the service we rendered, but we receive back even more!

Let's use a simplistic - but accurately demonstrative - example.

Suppose you agree to perform a particular service to a client or customer and the fair value for your service is $500.  You and the client/customer agree upon the compensation and you commence the project.

Now, if you completed the project, and in doing so, rendered $500 worth of service, you would have performed exactly as mutually agreed upon and your compensation would be a fair exchange of value.  Both parties receive exactly that to which was bargained for and mutually agreed upon.

But, suppose in copmpleting the project, you perform some extra service - service above and beyond what the client/customer is expecting.  You "go the extra mile," as some like to say.  And, in doing so, you expect no additional compensation from the client/customer.  As Professor Hill states, you are "doing more than paid for."

When all is said and done, you perform an extra $200 worth of service for your client/customer.  She notices what you have done and is ECSTATIC!  But, she can only pay you the $500, and rightly, that is all you should expect - for that was the agreed upon exchange of value for rendering your service.

Under the Law of Compensation, you can expect to receive back - at some time - the $200 in value for the extra service that you rendered.  Perhaps your client/customer will, voluntarily, send you the money without you asking.  Or, it may come in another form.  The bottom line is that under the Law of Compensation, you WILL receive back that $200.

However, the Law of Increasing Returns is also working, and under that Law, you will receive back MORE than the extra $200 in service that you rendered.  You may receive back, perhaps, $500 or even $1,000 in value.  That client may have been so pleased with the additional value of service that you provided that she tells her clients and a month later you pick up new clients offering you more money!

One cannot predict precisely how the Law of Increasing Returns will manifest the increasing returns, but it does.  I know - I have personally experienced it hundreds of times and it works - like clockwork.

In fact, it works so well, that the Law is incorporated into my business model.  Some think that I am nuts - that I should be charging every penny (and more) for everything that I do.  But, experience has taught me that is not the way to build goodwill.

Provide Value above and beyond what is expected.  And, provide Value FIRST before you are engaged for your services.

If you follow these rules, I absolutely guarantee spectacular results.

Here is what Professor Hill states on the subject:

We will now analyze the law upon which this entire lesson is founded, namely –

THE LAW OF INCREASING RETURNS!

With this vital “tip” from Nature, which we may gather from the wheat fields, let us proceed to appropriate this Law of Increasing Returns and learn how to apply it to the service we render, to the end that it may yield returns in excess of and out of proportion to the effort put forth.

When you do only that for which you are paid, there is nothing out of the ordinary to attract favorable comment about the transaction; but, when you willingly do more than that for which you are paid, your action attracts the favorable attention of all who are affected by the transaction, and goes another step toward establishing a reputation that will eventually set the Law of Increasing Returns to work in your behalf, for this reputation will create a demand for your services, far and wide.

If you carry out this experiment in the proper attitude of mind, you will discover that which all others who have become familiar with the law upon which it is based have discovered; namely, that –

You can no more render service without receiving compensation than you can withhold the rendering of it without suffering the loss of reward.

“Cause and effect, means and ends, seed and fruit, cannot be severed,” says Emerson; “for the effect already blooms in the cause, the end pre-exists in the means, the fruit in the seed.”

Success Key: Take Annual Inventory of Yourself - 28 Questions You Should Answer

Today's post is a Success Passage (and Success Key) taken directly from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich.  The Passage is from the Chapter on Organized Planning and consists of a 28-question Self-Analysis Questionnaire for Personal Inventory.

Okay, I realize it would have been best to post this Self-Analysis Questionnaire last week, but better late than never and let us remember - each day is a new start.  There is, as I have often stated here, nothing magical about the start of a new calendar year.  We get a chance each and every day to begin our lives anew and when better to start than right now.

A critical point to be made about this Self-Analysis Questionnaire is to undertake it with total, absolute and brutal honesty - something that is always difficult when it comes to ourselves.  Let's face it - it is easy to see the faults of others (the splinter in their eye) and not our own personal defects (the beam in our eye).  The Ego detests being wrong and considers itself the center of the Universe (or so I have been told or read somewhere).  In order for this Personal Inventory to be effective - and why do it if you don't want results - it is imperative that we lay aside our personal biases and dig deep - real, real deep. 

The Truth will set you Free.  So, suck it up for some brief pain in order to obtain an honest assessment that will enable you to make real, substantial positive gains in your journey to Succeed.

"Your annual self-analysis should be made at the end of each year, so you can include in your New Year’s Resolutions any improvements which the analysis indicates should be made.  Take this inventory by asking yourself the following questions, and by checking your answers with the aid of someone who will not permit you to deceive yourself as to their accuracy."  -  Napoleon Hill, "Think and Grow Rich"

Lastly, while Napoleon Hill's Self Inventory Questionnaire is geared towards "Personal Services" (as a means for determining your "market value"), the analysis is not limited to that purpose; it may be used for measuring any aspect of Personal Development, Self Improvement and Success Achievement.

Take Inventory of Yourself: 28 Questions You Should Answer

It is one thing to want – everyone wants more – but it is something entirely different to be Worth more!  Many people mistake their “wants” for their “just dues.”  Your financial requirements or wants have nothing whatever to do with your Worth.  Your value is established entirely by your ability to render useful service or your capacity to induce others to render such service.

Annual self-analysis is an essential in the effective marketing of personal services, as is annual inventory in merchandising.  Moreover, the yearly analysis should disclose a decrease in faults, and an increase in Virtues.  One goes ahead, stands still, or goes backward in life.  One’s object should be, of course, to go ahead.  Annual self analysis will disclose whether advancement has been made, and if so, how much.  It will also disclose any backward steps one may have made.  The effective marketing of personal services requires one to move forward even if the progress is slow.

Your annual self-analysis should be made at the end of each year, so you can include in your New Year’s Resolutions any improvements which the analysis indicates should be made.  Take this inventory by asking yourself the following questions, and by checking your answers with the aid of someone who will not permit you to deceive yourself as to their accuracy.

Self-Analysis Questionnaire for Personal Inventory

1. Have I attained the goal which I established as my objective for this year?  (You should work with a definite yearly objective to be attained as a part of your major life objective).
2. Have I delivered Service of the best possible Quality of which I was capable, or could I have improved any part of this service?
3. Have I delivered Service in the greatest possible Quantity of which I was capable?
4. Has the Spirit of my conduct been Harmonious, and Cooperative at all times?
5. Have I permitted the Habit of Procrastination to decrease my efficiency, and if so, to what extent?
6. Have I improved my Personality, and if so, in what ways?
7. Have I been Persistent in following my plans through to completion?
8. Have I reached Decisions Promptly and Definitely on all occasions?
9. Have I permitted any one or more of the “Six Basic Fears” to decrease my efficiency?
10. Have I been either “over-cautious,” or “under-cautious?”
11. Has my relationship with my associates in work been pleasant, or unpleasant?  If it has been unpleasant, has the fault been partly, or wholly mine?
12. Have I dissipated any of my energy through lack of Concentration of effort?
13. Have I been open minded and tolerant in connection with all subjects?
14. In what way have I improved my ability to render Service?
15. Have I been intemperate in any of my Habits?
16. Have I expressed, either openly or secretly, any form of Egotism?
17. Has my conduct toward my associates been such that it has induced them to Respect me?
18. Have my opinions and Decisions been based upon guesswork, or accuracy of analysis and Thought?
19. Have I followed the Habit of budgeting my time, my expenses, and my income, and have I been conservative in these budgets?
20. How much time have I devoted to unprofitable effort which I might have used to better advantage?
21. How may I re-budget my time, and change my habits so I will be more efficient during the coming year?
22. Have I been guilty of any conduct which was not approved by my conscience?
23. In what ways have I rendered more Service and better Service than I was paid to render?
24. Have I been unfair to anyone, and if so, in what way?
25. If I had been the purchaser of my own services for the year, would I be satisfied with my purchase?
26. Am I in the right vocation, and if not, why not?
27. Has the purchaser of my Services been satisfied with the Service I have rendered, and if not, why not?
28. What is my present rating on the fundamental Principles of Success?  (Make this rating fairly, and frankly, and have it checked by someone who is courageous enough to do it accurately).

Welcome back for the next lesson of Napoleon Hill's "The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons."  Today's lecture, Lesson Three, is on Self-Confidence - a requisite for attaining Success.

Fear kills ambition and snuffs our attempts to Succeed and achieve our Goals.  Fear stops our progress dead in its tracks.  In fact, the greatest Success Teachers and Masters cite Fear more than any other reason why we fail to attain Success, change our lives and reach our Goals.

Fear may be overt and obvious, or it may be subtle and insidious.  Either way, Fear must be defeated.

The greatest weapon for overtaking Fear and removing it from your path is Self-Confidence.  We are in luck, for Napoleon Hill is a great teacher on the subject of Self-Confidence.

Finally, after what has seemed an eternity and a relentless deluge of challenges and obstacles, we are putting the finishing touches and running the final tests on The Success Manual Prosperity Library web site, featuring The Wattles Prosperity Bible, The Law of Attraction Prosperity Bible and The Wattles Quotable Bible.

The Wattles Prosperity Bible

 A Five Volume Compilation of the Works of Wallace D. Wattles

When Wallace Delois Wattles was growing up in the post-Civil War America, the country was undergoing major changes in the political, economic and social arenas.

While the South was rebuilding its battered infrastructure, the North, where Wattles lived, was prospering, both industrially and agriculturally.  This period, known as the Second Industrial Revolution, began in the mid-19^th century, with the growth and expansion of steel, petroleum, as well as chemical and electrical sectors; railways and steam ship industry also thrived in the still- young nation.

In fact, by the time the 19^th century came to a close and the new one dawned, corporate giants such as U.S. Steel and General Electric spawned the legendary tycoons by the names of Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew P. Mellon, and J.P. Morgan, among other renowned and often notorious wheelers and dealers of that era.

The extravagant lifestyles of these super-rich industrialists and financiers – which prompted Mark Twain to coin the phrase “Gilded Age” to describe the excesses of the wealthy people in the second half of the 1800s – did not, however, reflect the grim living conditions of the working class.   Historical records show that in 1890, when Wattles was 30, 11 million of America’s 12 million families earned less than $1,200 a year, with the average annual income of $380, well below the poverty line.

Not much is known today about Wattles’ life and family, but from the information that is available to us we can surmise that he was born into that modest – not to say poverty-stricken – milieu like the vast majority of his countrymen. 

We cannot say with any certainty that he was inspired by the well-heeled tycoons of the era, but we do know that he turned the art of getting rich into a science.

His philosophy about wealth is succinctly summed up in this quote: “Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.”

Putting together Wattles’ biography is a challenging task because very little is known about him.   Whether this dearth was a matter of modesty and humility or merely poor record-keeping we cannot guess, but anyone attempting to research Wattles’ life will hit a brick wall riddled with many gaps and holes.  For instance, his schooling remains a mystery, as does his family.  We know that he had a daughter, Florence, but have no information about his wife.  We also know that early on he worked on a farm and later as a lecturer in Indiana, as well as in some capacity at a Methodist Church, but have no clue about any other jobs he might have held.  We know he died young – at 51 – of “frail” health, but possess no details of what illness he suffered from.  He was a prolific writer, publishing scores of articles, essays and books.  Many of the articles and essays were published as compilations; others as single articles. However, specific details as to many of his published works are few.

What little we do know about his childhood and later life can be gleaned from the letters Florence wrote to Wattles’ publisher, Elizabeth Towne.   From those letters we can construct a sketchy portrait of a compassionate and caring man of profound convictions, and a prolific writer who believed his ideas would transform people’s lives.

Although Wattles remains – given the scarcity of information about him – somewhat of an enigma, he wrote some of the most powerful self-help books ever published.  As a matter of fact, the young farm boy grew up to be a trailblazer in the area of wealth-building, personal empowerment and success, a field that, while in its infancy during Wattles’ lifetime, blossomed as the “New Thought” era, and which today is a billion-dollar industry.  Indeed, the “self improvement” market in the U.S. alone is estimated as worth more than $13.9 billion in 2010.[1]

In a way, Wallace Delois Wattles’ life is a quintessential rags-to-riches story. 

He was born in 1860 in Illinois, and later lived in Indiana.  According to the 1880 US Federal Census, young Wallace was probably the only child of a gardener and a housewife.  He lived with his parents on a farm in Nunda Township, McHenry County, Illinois.  With little formal education, he spent his early years toiling as a farm laborer.  In those days, life on a farm was dismal, requiring long hours of backbreaking labor.  Even though new farm equipment was invented and introduced during that period, horses, oxen and people still provided the power that fueled the machines. 

Eking out a living from a farm, which relied heavily on weather-dependant crops, was a challenge then, as it is, though maybe to a lesser degree, now.   We do not know for sure whether this was the only work Wattles did in his youth, but his life at the time is reported to have been one of poverty, hardship, and failure.  We will never know for certain, but perhaps this strife had sparked Wattles’ desire to become successful and rich and to understand proper and healthy living. 

One of Florence’s messages to Mrs. Towne provides some insight into what drove her father to overcome his humble beginnings and ultimately led him to pen a series of highly successful self-help books:   “For years his life was cursed by poverty and the fear of poverty.  He was always scheming and planning to get for his family those things, which make the abundant life possible.”

In 1896, the 36-year-old Midwesterner attended a “convention of reformers” in Chicago, where he met George Davis Herron.   Two years Wattles’ junior, Herron was a controversial Congregational Church minister and professor of Applied Christianity at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he attracted attention for his radical religious views, namely a new philosophy called Christian Socialism.  A movement that originated in the mid-19th-century Europe, it combined the fundamentals of Socialism with the principles of Christianity as a means of helping the poor.

Florence wrote to Mrs. Towne that her father caught Herron’s social vision.  “I shall never forget the morning he came home,” she related.  “It was Christmas.  Mother had put her last dollar into a cuff box and we had placed it beneath an evergreen branch which served for our Christmas tree and which we had illuminated with tallow candles and strung with popcorn.  Finally Father came.  With that beautiful smile he praised the tree, said the cuff box was just what he had been wanting - and took us all in his arms to tell us of the wonderful social message of Jesus, the message which he later embodied in ‘A New Christ.’ From that day until his death he worked unceasingly to realize the glorious vision of human brotherhood.”

According to Florence, at one time her father had held a position in the Methodist Church, but was fired because of his “heresy,” possibly the Christian Socialism views, which were not quite compatible with the mainstream Christianity.  Two of his books, “A New Christ” and “Jesus: The Man and His Work” focused on Christianity from a Socialist perspective.  As a matter of fact, Wattles was so involved in the movement, that he twice ran as a Socialist candidate for two public offices:  in the Eighth Congressional District in 1908, and two years later, for the office of Prosecuting Attorney for Indiana’s Madison County’s 50th court district.  He lost both elections, but Florence became a delegate to the Socialist Party National Committee in 1912 and 1915.

Another new spiritual movement that Wattles embraced with zeal and conviction, and which had, in large measure, influenced his thinking and writing, was called New Thought.  This movement started to emerge in the second half of the 19^th century, at about the same time as Christian Socialism.

This was a turning point for Wattles, the moment that likely re-defined and re-directed his life to some degree. 

The movement, which remains active to this day, promotes the idea that all of life’s circumstances and events, whether positive or negative, be they physical or mental in nature, originate in the mind as a consequence of our thinking and beliefs, and, therefore, “right thinking” can change our lives positively. 

Like many thinkers and philosophers from a variety of churches and religious denominations, and even some secular groups and individuals as well, Wattles became a proponent of these metaphysical tenets relating to the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, creative visualization, and other essential life forces that formed the basis of his beliefs and writings.  Today the self-improvement and personal growth industry is a thriving, multi-billion-dollar sector, but in Wattles’ time it was still in its nascent stages.   The New Thought movement, however, marked an important milestone in the development of the self-help phenomenon.

Because of the unbridled optimism, positive energy, and personal empowerment inherent to the New Thought principles, Wattles, along with his contemporaries like Napoleon Hill, Frank Channing Haddock, Thomas Troward, William Walker Atkinson, and, a bit later, Dale Carnegie, had become one of the earliest self-help pioneers – people who believed in improving themselves and all the aspects of their lives by harvesting their spiritual and inner strengths.  Essentially, the mind can achieve whatever it can conceive.

Wattles’ brand of motivational self-improvement philosophy is best expressed in this quote of his: “The scientific use of thought consists in forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want; in holding fast to the purpose to get what you want; and in realizing with grateful faith that you do get what you want.”

Wattles discovered an outlet for his ideas in Nautilus, a magazine for New Thought writers founded in 1898 by Elizabeth Towne.  In it, Wattles found a fitting forum to advance his ideas and foster his writing skills.  As Florence explained: “When we came to Elwood (Indiana) three years ago, Father began a Sunday night lectureship in Indianapolis.  This was our only source of income.  Later he began to write for Nautilus and to word out his own philosophy.  He wrote almost constantly.  Then it was that he formed his mental picture.  He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality of power, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision.”

Wattles applied the New Thought principles to his own life through personal experimentation.  For example, he tested some of the health and food fads fashionable at that time, such as the “No Breakfast Plan,” before encouraging his readers to try out his theories on themselves. 

How a poor man with little education was able to form such a far-reaching vision and bring it to fruition with numerous books remains a mystery.  What is certain is that his works, at least by some assessments, are among the most powerful personal improvement books ever written.   

While Wattles authored numerous works, his best-known are likely the trilogy of “The Science of Being Rich” (1910), “The Science of Being Well” (1910) and “The Science of Being Great” (1911).  All three are fitting examples of self-improvement and personal success theories he had become known for, as demonstrated in Florence’s letter to Mrs.  Towne: “The supreme faith of the man never left him; never for a moment did he lose confidence in the power of the master Intelligence to right every wrong and to give to every man and woman his or her share of the good things of life.”

The above quote is a paragraph from Chapter 2 of Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich,” a forerunner of every personal finance and self-help book ever written.  His statement that this pragmatic text is “intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward,” rings as true in the second decade of the 21^st century as it did when it was first published 100 years ago.  

Incredibly, there exists today million dollar self-help businesses founded solely on “The Science of Getting Rich.”

While many people believe that amassing wealth is a matter of hard work, luck, or a combination of both, Wattles promoted a more scientific approach.  “There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic,” he famously noted.  “There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches, and once these laws are learned and obeyed by anyone, that person will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

“The Science of Getting Rich,” still widely read and highly acclaimed today, laid ground for “The Science of Being Great,” in which Wattles stated that “Greatness is equally inherent in all, and may be manifested by all.  Every person may become great.”

The inspirational and motivational message is also clear in “The Science of Being Well,” where Wattles writes that the work is directed at “those who want health, and who want a practical guide and handbook, not a philosophical treatise.  It is an instructor in the use of the universal Principle of Life, and my effort has been to explain the way in so plain and simple a fashion that the reader, though he may have given no previous study to New Thought or metaphysics, may readily follow it to perfect health.  While retaining all essentials, I have carefully eliminated all non-essentials; I have used no technical, abstruse, or difficult language, and have kept the one point in view at all times.”   

The question that arises is whether Wattles successfully applied his New Thought beliefs and theories on how an average person can become rich, happy and healthy regardless of his or her circumstances to his own life.  From Florence’s correspondence to Mrs. Towne it would appear that he did.  Before his death in 1911 at 51, Florence reported that “he made lots of money, and had good health, except for his extreme frailty.”

There is no information on how many “regular” people who read Wattles’ works in the past century had been influenced by his message.  We do know, however, that the Australian New Thought writer Rhonda Byrne said her inspiration for the hit 2006 movie, “The Secret,” as well as the same-titled book, came from Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich.”  When she first opened the book in 2004, Byrne relates on her website, “Something inside of me had me turn the pages one by one, and I can still remember my tears hitting the pages as I was reading it.  It gave me a glimpse of The Secret and it was like a flame inside of my heart.” 

So in the end, the little-known life of Wallace Delois Wattles was, in many ways, a quintessentially American story of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps, succeeding against all odds, and influencing the lives of others.  In the words of his daughter Florence, “His life was truly the powerful life.”

When reading many of  these older classic Success Manuals, I am astounded by how often the words of wisdom in these books directly apply to our present times.  Many of the classic Success Manuals were written 80-100 years ago; yet, when reading them, one would believe that they were written only recently, since the message of the word is so appropriate to our present world and the economic conditions that encompass it.

So it is with "The Secret of Wealth" by Franklyn Hobbs.  If you enjoyed "The Way to Wealth" by Benjamin Franklin, written in 1757, then you will love this work by Hobbs.  This Franklyn picks up where the prior Franklin left off.

The premise of The Secret of Wealth by Franklyn Hobbs is simple: The vast majority of individuals who become wealthy do so NOT through single, spectacular, "home runs" (think "get rich quick"), but rather, through small, steady and consistent acts, which, over time, the accumulative effect generates wealth.

Hobbs is right.  Yes, there are some people who are in that right place at the right time - not by "luck," but through action, diligence, planning and all of the other factors that we discuss on this site - who do make a "killing" in futures trading after years and years of learning and losses, or who write that once-in-a-lifetime best selling series that sells millions and millions of copies (after writing numerous books, the royalties of which barely cover the rent), or that musical group that finally "hits it big" after 12 long, hard years on the road playing in dive bars and living on boxed macaroni and cheese and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.  It does happen.  But, what are the chances?  Since most give up anyways, the likelihood of generating enormous wealth and holding onto it through a single event are miniscule.

The fact is that it comes down to what we do day-in and day-out.  How much do we really waste?  Do we buy material things because we truly need or want them, or do we buy them because it is fashionable and we need to keep up with what is in style, or worse, because we feel compelled to "keep up with the 'Joneses.'"  As Hobbs points out, the truly wealthy didn't live a life of extravagance BEFORE they accumulated great wealth.  They lived modestly, within their means - AND SAVED, NOT SPENT, THE MONEY THEY EARNED!

Let's see.  How much is the US federal government's debt?  Let's go to an amazing site: The US Debt Clock.

As of this writing, the U.S. federal debt is approximately $13.5 TRILLION Dollars.  That equates with approximately $43,233 for every U.S. citizen, or $120,761 for every U.S. taxpayer.

The purpose of this post is not to assess blame, determine who or what party is at fault, or play politics.  It is simply to point out that our own governement cannot live within its means.  And, we are not alone - many governments in the world are in the same or similar (or worse) predicaments.

This mindset permeates right down through state and municipal governements to the citizens and taxpayers of this country.  Our personal debt is out of control.  Take a look at The US Debt Clock again: the personal debt in the United States is an unfathomable $16.2 TRILLION Dollars!  There is no way - absolutely NO way - that anyone can accumulate wealth as long as they continue to live in a "borrow and spend" mentality.  That includes our government.  And, it includes us.

Friends - we MUST take control of our financial lives!  Because if we don't, certainly nobody else will.  And certainly we will never accumulate wealth unless we change our mindsets and work at the basics.  It seems everyone these days is trying to hit the game-winning, grandslam home run, but they don't know how the game of baseball is even played and they have never taken batting practice.

My pontificating is done, which brings us back full circle to The Secret of Wealth by Franklyn Hobbs.  Download it and start reading it today - there is no time to waste!  As the old Chinese Proverb states: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is now."

In 1915 at the age of 19, Prevette was awarded the Andrew Carnegie Medal for writing and delivering a speech on International Peace.  His subject was: “Is War Rational?” The opening sentence was: “War is as old as the human race, and as young as the last breath you breathe.”  This sentence was quoted in newspapers throughout the world.

On February 21, 1947, Prevette was named in Ripley’s “Believe it or Not,” for having accomplished the following unfathomable feat: He completed 32 courses in Law, passed the State Board of Examiners, was licensed as an Attorney-at-Law and graduated with a college degree – ALL IN 5 MONTHS!  In "How to Turn Your Ability into Cash," Prevette reveals how he achieved this amazing accomplishment.

How to Turn Ideas Into Money

Earl Prevette

There are three separate departments of the United States Government.

First: Legislative Department.  Second: Judicial Department.  Third: Executive Department.

First: The Legislative Department.  The function of this department is to prepare bills for legislation.  After debate and consideration, the bills proposed are either passed upon or shelved.  Those passed upon become laws.

Second: The Judicial Department.  The function of this department is to render judgment and to determine the validity of any law passed by the Legislative Department.  Is the law in harmony with the Constitution?  Does it conform?  Does it meet a need?  These are questions which the Judicial Department may ask concerning any law.  The Judicial Department can declare any law passed by the Legislative Department null and void.

Third: The Executive Department.  The function of this department is to execute, and to put into action all laws that have been passed upon by the Legislative Department, and that have not been disapproved by the Judicial Department.  The Executive Department makes the law a reality.

There are three separate Departments of the Mind which deal with ideas.  The function of these Three Departments of the Mind bears a striking similarity to the three Departments of the Government.

First: The Emotion is the Legislative Department of the Mind.  Emotion comes from the Latin word “emovere,” which means to “move out.”  It is a vibratory thought moving out of the mind, which is attracted by an outside influence expressed or manifested either in another idea, suggestion, symbol or thing.  It is to be aware of something instinctively or intellectually.  The Emotion is the antenna of the Mind radiating and emitting thoughts into space, and also receiving them from space.  All ideas, thoughts, suggestions or impulses that come to the Mind are received by the way of the Emotion.  An idea of quality and merit is given consideration and passed upon by the Emotion, which is the Legislative Department of the Mind.

Second: The Judgment is the Judicial Department of the Mind.  Judgment is the act of judging the operation of the Mind, involving comparison and discrimination by which knowledge of values and relations are mentally formulated.  To analyze, to reason, to interpret and to discern is the power of the Judgment.

After the idea has been passed upon by the Legislative Department, the Emotion, it is turned over to the Judicial Department, the Judgment.  The Judgment weighs every detail of the idea to determine its quality, its usefulness and to ascertain whether it meet a need and also to establish its validity.  The Judgment also acts as the supreme arbiter and can declare any idea or impulse null and void, even though it has been passed upon by the Emotion.

After the Judgment establishes the validity of an idea, it is then ready for enforcement and action.

Third: The Desire is the Executive Department of the Mind.  Desire is the ardor of feeling.  A longing to see the idea in action.  The Desire executes and puts the idea in operation.  The Desire transforms the idea into a Reality.

It takes all three Departments of the Government to make a law a Reality, and likewise it takes all three Departments of the Mind to turn an idea into a Reality.  The Emotion passes upon the idea, the Judgment establishes the validity of the idea, and the Desire executes the idea into a Reality.

An understanding of these three Departments of the Mind will help you to make your dreams come true, qualify you to have an abundance of everything, and enable you to turn your ideas into money.  A knowledge of all three Departments of the Mind is essential, but the ultimate and complete fulfillment of an idea is dependent upon Desire.  Desire is a combination of feeling and action, and brings into force all the qualities, attributes and powers of the Mind.

What is an Idea?  An Idea is an image formed in the Mind.  It is a mental picture of something seen, heard or thought.  The formation of a pattern by which something is developed or created.

Ideas are incessantly striking the Emotion.  Some are declared null and void by the Judgment.  Others are consumed in daydreaming, and passed off as fleeting notions.  Others take wings and fly away.  Ideas come and go, and are usually dropped with a wish.  Thus the old saying goes: “If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.”

A wish is all right in its place, but seldom does it turn into money.  On the other hand, some of your ideas are good, and can be turned into money.  On these you want to concentrate, and convert into money.

How can you turn your idea into money?  This is a simple and fascinating process, and one to enjoy.

It matters not whether you work with people, words or things.  It is very essential to have a vehicle in which to convey your Idea to others.  The best vehicle to convey an Idea is a Plan.  A Plan gives to the Idea a Body.  A Plan transforms the Idea into an Ideal.  An Ideal is a perfect image, and establishes a true conception of the thing you want to create, or the event you want to bring about in your experience.

Everything you observe in nature is an Idea of God, and is manifested in a Plan.  This Plan gives to the Idea a Body expressed in form, size and color.  If this were not so, it would be impossible to identify and classify the different varieties and species as they appear in nature.  This is a definite clue as to why all ideas to influence people or to create things must have a Plan.

This great principle is manifested all about us.  Everything created by man had its origin in Mind.  It is an invisible idea before it is a visible thing.  It is a thought, then a product.  All successful ideas for accomplishment must have a Plan.  A Plan not only identifies your Idea, but it also distinguishes it and gives it the momentum to operate.

Three definite Principles are essential to create a Plan for your Idea.

First: Create a Plan for the thing you desire.

Second: Develop a Process to put the Plan in Action.

Third: Produce an act to make the Plan a Reality.  A plan for the thing you desire entails a very definite and specific idea of the thing, position or situation you want.  After a definite decision has been reached, then proceed to build a Plan around this Idea.

 First: Develop a Plan.

It is a very simple process to build a Plan, and do it scientifically.  It must be planned.  A mass of material thrown together will not build a house.  Every brick, every plank and every nail must have its place.  The same is true in building a Plan.  Every word, every thought and every sentence must have its place.  A Plan is organized knowledge for portraying the reasons why the thing or position desired should become a Reality.  It is the art of creating in the mind of someone else a belief in the Idea you wish that person to accept.

The most scientific way to build a Plan is to get all your material together, get all the facts, and find out everything you can about the thing you desire.  Get its history, background, economic relation and the part it plays in life.  Analyze these data, catalogue them, classify them, organize them, define them, refine them and take the best parts of them and translate them into your Plan.  Include in this Plan anything that will improve business, anything that will contribute to the welfare of others, anything that will add peace of mind to people, anything that will enrich the happiness of others, or anything you can find that will help you to turn your Idea into Money.

Present this Plan in sequence, enumerate each point step by step, and try to use meaty words with a picture meaning.  Speak or write your Plan in concrete terms, not in abstract phrases.  Make it brief, concise, direct, definite, forceful and by all means understandable.  Season the Plan with the savor of personal interest, flavor it with the spice of enthusiasm and sweeten it with the sugar of kindness.

Second: Develop a Process to put the Plan into Action.

By inaugurating the Plan for the thing you desire you have decided definitely what you want.  The Plan to accomplish this is now established.  What is the next step?  To develop a Process, to put the Plan for the thing you desire into action.  A Process is the act of proceeding to put the Plan in operation.  This is brought about by the application of Four Definite Laws, and each one is essential to the fulfillment of the Plan.  These Laws are:

1.            The Law of Faith

Paul gave to the world the greatest definition of Faith: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Faith is believing and trusting wholeheartedly in the invisible forces of God which are the substance of things hoped for; and by adhering strictly to this Faith, the substance of these things will become the evidence of those forces, and make their appearance in your experience.

Someone asked Andrew Carnegie what he considered the greatest thing in his phenomenal success.  He answered: “Faith in myself, Faith in others and Faith in my business.”  The world always makes way for the man who knows what he is doing, and where he is going.

On the evening of December 12, 1900, a young man, thirty-eight years old, was invited to speak at a banquet held at the University Club in New York.  The guests at this banquet included men prominent in industry and finance, and was headed by J. P. Morgan.  The topic of the young man’s speech was: “The Future of the Steel Industry.”  He spoke for one hour and thirty minutes.  His unfaltering Faith in The Future of the Steel Industry, and the Plan for initiating it was so scientific, dynamic and forceful, that all those present were moved to action.  J. P. Morgan, was expected to leave after the first few minutes of the speech, was so entranced and so impressed that he decided to form the United States Steel Corporation.

The speaker of that evening was Charles M. Schwab.  As a reward for that speech demonstrating the Law of Faith in an Idea, Charles M. Schwab was made the first president of the United States Steel Corporation, at a salary of one hundred thousand dollars per year.  It pays to demonstrate Faith.

Faith is a belief in the favorable outcome of anything undertaken.  Faith gives life, power and action to your Plan.  Faith inspires you with absolute confidence to demonstrate your Plan, and qualifies you to turn your ideas into money.  By all means practice Faith.

2.           The Law of Repetition

In nature the Law of Repetition is continuously and regularly repeating the same things.  Every day the sun rises in the east, and sets in the west, with absolute precision.  The night follows the day with immutable certainty.  The four seasons are consecutively repeating themselves one after the other with inexorable accuracy.  The astronomer sets his clock by this undeviating law.

The Law of Repetition has been one of the contributing factors in teaching you most of the things you know thoroughly in life.  For example: When you were little, it took you quite a long time to learn how to walk.  Then you finally learned by the Law of Repetition.  You kept repeating the same movements every day in every way.  Finally, through your own experience you acquired sufficient knowledge, poise, and confidence to qualify and perfect you in the Art of Walking.  In the beginning it was a very difficult task, but once you acquired the knowledge and experience of how to walk, it became very easy.

You learned to talk by the same law.  As time went on, to school you must go, and again the Law of Repetition became your teacher.  Over and over, it drilled you in memorizing the A, B, C’s, the multiplication table, and that first poem you recited before the class.  The things the Law of Repetition has taught you are embedded into your consciousness.  They are a part of you and the application of them is natural and easy.

The trick of the magician looks easy.  It is easy for him.  He has made it easy by the Law of Repetition.

As applied to the Process to put your Plan in Action, the Law of Repetition is the act of perfecting your Plan.  You do this by practice.  You learn to know it, you learn to time it.  You know when to speak and when to be quiet.  You sense the proper pitch and inflection to give each word.  You have confidence in your Plan.  You learn to feel your lines and every thought in them becomes more inspiring and more invigorating.  It becomes a part of you.  You can give it in perfect sequence and in perfect co-ordination.  You find it has magic in it, not only for you, but for those to whom you present it.  By practicing and demonstrating your Plan, it gathers its own momentum, and throws out its own aura.  Your thoughts become magnets and you can make others feel the impulse of your Plan.

Every time you go over your Plan, you learn something new.  You learn to develop new inspiration, new interest, new zest and new enthusiasm.  By all means rehearse and try to perfect your Plan by applying the Law of Repetition.

 3.           The Law of Imagination

Imagination is the power to think in terms of images, words or things.  It is the workshop of the mind.  Here the Plan is given shape, form, and made ready for action.  This faculty of the Mind is able to visualize and imagine an idea in action.

To illustrate the dynamic power of the imagination to develop an idea, it will interest you to know this story.  About fifty years ago an old country doctor created a very wonderful formula.  He did not know what to do with it, yet he realized its great value.  He took this formula to a young drug clerk and explained its contents.  This formula was only an idea to the old doctor but the drug clerk paid him five hundred dollars for the idea.

What did the young drug clerk do?  He turned the idea expressed in that formula over to his imagination.  He visualized its value.  He discovered that the contents of that formula contained all the essential elements to supply people with a cool and refreshing drink, that would make them pause and give them a lift.  The idea thrilled and urged the drug clerk to formulate a Plan, to put the idea of that formula into action.  He wasted no time in creating a Plan for the distribution of a world-famous drink.  That drug clerk was Asa Candler.  The drink was Coca-Cola.  Today the name Coca-Cola is on most billboards, and the taste of it on most tongues.  That little piece of paper, with an idea mixed with the imagination of Asa Candler, turned into hundreds of millions of dollars.

A sequel to this story is that some years later when the Coca-Cola Company was well on the road to prosperity, a young man walked into Mr. Candler’s office and suggested to him that he had a Plan to double the business of the Coca-Cola Company.  For this Plan he wanted $25,000.  The Board of Directors met and agreed to the offer.  That Plan was short and to the point, and possibly contained fewer words than any other Plan ever offered to double a company’s business.  The Plan was: “Bottle it.”

Imagination is one of the most valuable faculties – by all means develop it.

4.          The Law of Persistence

You can have Faith in an idea, you can perfect an idea through the Law of Repetition, you can use the power of the Imagination to visualize the idea; but with all these you must carry through.  You must demonstrate Persistence.

Persistence comes from two Latin words, “per,” meaning “to,” and “sistere,” meaning “stand.”  To stand or be fixed, and face all difficulties with un-daunted courage.  To go on resolutely with your Plan, in spite of all opposition or adversity.  To persevere with dogged determination until your Plan is manifested, and your efforts are crowned with success.  Persistence is an attribute of character that guarantees the fulfillment of the Plan.

It is estimated that over twenty million people have read the book or seen the moving picture, “Gone with the Wind.”  Something accounts for this phenomenal popularity.  What is it?  Scarlett, the heroine of the story, remained all through the play the master of her fate, and never its victim.  No obstacle, no tragedy, no disaster, no adversity, no catastrophe, no circumstance, and no condition daunted her unconquerable spirit.  She met and conquered all of them with indomitable Persistence.  A demonstration of the Law of Persistence enabled her to conquer fate, and to crown her efforts with personal triumph.  This demonstration was a challenge to others to emulate her.  They were eager to find out how she did it.

Each year at Wake Forest, where I went to college, Doctor Tom, the old colored janitor, was invited to address the student body and to offer his words of wisdom.

Doctor Tom’s great admonition was repeated year after year.  It was “Be sure you are right, and then be sure to go ahead.”  This is a vivid illustration of Persistence.

The Plan is right, you are right and Persistence will not fail to make the Plan work, and turn your ideas into money.

Success of any Plan is like pressing out cider with a cider press.  You squeeze and squeeze and it seems as though the cider will never come; and then one big squeeze and out it comes.  Persistence is the last big squeeze that makes the Plan successful.  It has no substitute and it is well to remember that a “quitter never wins, and a winner never quits.”

Third: Produce an act to make the Plan a Reality.

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”

In the first Principle we acquired the knowledge essential for the Plan.  In the Second Principle we learned the Laws necessary for its fulfillment.  Now comes the Third Principle, the Act of Making the Plan a reality.  In the last role we become a Shakespearean player.  All the forces of character and all the attributes of personality must be generated to put the Plan into action.

An idea is an image.  An idea with a Plan is a perfect image.  It is an ideal.  An ideal is something real, whether it be visible or invisible.  It is a compound idea made up of many ideas.  What happens when a Plan becomes an Ideal?  The idea in the Plan becomes real to you.  It is a part of you.  The Plan is given a big reception in the Grand Ball Room of Consciousness.  Here it meets urge, spirit, motive, confidence, courage and impulse of action.  At this reception Faith embraces the Plan.  Imagination praises the Plan.  Repetition repeats the Plan and Persistence guarantees the fulfillment of the Plan.  To visualize a Plan is to see it as a composite whole.  To idealize a Plan is to feel it in action.  Idealize is putting the “I” in the deal.  You can feel yourself initiating the Plan with skill and performing every step with alacrity and precision.  You feel its influence, not only on yourself but on all those with whom you come in contact.  With this power behind an idea, the Plan becomes so potent that soon it becomes a driving force behind you.

To illustrate the theory on “How to Turn Your Ideas into Money,” I want to tell you how I actually do it.  Some years ago, I told a general agent of a life insurance company that I wanted to sell life insurance by telephone.  He said that it was impossible.  A few years later this gentleman was surprised to know that I had sold ten million dollars’ worth of life insurance to strangers over the telephone.  To accomplish this unparalleled record it was necessary for me to know something about ideas, and how to get these ideas over to people in order to get results.  I liked the idea of life insurance.  This was only an idea that struck my Emotion.  The Judgment passed on the idea and declared it sound.  The Desire was aroused and convinced me that the idea could be turned into money.  The question was how to do it?

Selling is a good deal like farming.  The farmer has to plant the seed.  In doing so, he has no assurance of a crop.  He does know that he must sow before he can reap.  The Bible teaches him: “Whatsoever ye sow, that shall ye also reap.”  The Mosaic Law tells him that everything in nature increaseth after its own kind.

The farmer is like the salesman.  The farmer plants seed.  The salesman plants ideas.  The ideas of your product, like seeds, will never grow a crop of sales unless they are planted.  The salesman reaps as he sows.  The more ideas he sows, the more sales he will reap.

To sell by telephone it is necessary to build ideas around your product.  These ideas must convey the value of the product to the prospect.  He can only react on ideas.  He is the negative force; you are the positive force.  Suggestions must come from you.  Reactions will follow from him.  The ideas of your product are the seed you plant.  The telephone helps you to plant more seed in a more scientific and systematic way.

Therefore, I realized, in order to have a crop of life insurance sales, I must sow a crop of life insurance ideas.  I lost no time in building a Sales Plan around the idea of life insurance.  In building this Plan I studied life insurance from every angle, not a phase of the subject was overlooked.  I sought every available source for knowledge and information.  I read every book I could find on the subject.  I compared all major companies.  I analyzed all important types of policies, including Term Insurance, Ordinary Life, Limited Payment Life, Endowments, all forms of Annuities and Retirement Income Plans.  I reckoned with mortality tables, compound interest tables, life expectancy tables, cash reserves, disability clauses, waiver of premium clauses, and tables for optional settlements.  I studied Life Insurance for partnerships, corporations and for tax purposes.  I searched tax laws relating to estates, wills and trusts.  I got acquainted with inheritance tax laws, both State and Federal.  The social, economic and financial aspects of life insurance as an institution were carefully weighed and considered.  I found the institution of life insurance was the steel girder holding together the economic structure of the nation.

After getting saturated with life insurance knowledge, I began to study the prospect.  Where does he fit in?  Where is his place in this great network of economic, social and financial relations?  I decided that the whole system was set up for one purpose and one purpose only, and that was to serve the needs of the prospect.  A life insurance policy was a declaration of financial independence, embodying guarantees that would solve his social, economic and financial problems, and make secure his hopes, ambitions and needs.  The prospect did not know this.  I must tell him.  Therefore, I made the prospect the center of interest in the Plan.  I made him the hub in the wheel.  I made him the spider in the web.  I draped a life insurance policy around his shoulders.  I idealized the Plan to him.  I made it talk.  I made it visualize and reveal its benefits and what these meant to him and his family.

The idea of life insurance incorporated into a sales plan of two hundred words, put in action by Faith, became a force.  It arrested attention, it incited interest, it persuaded and convinced the prospect to act.  It created sales, it produced results, it turned the idea of life insurance into money.  (The Sales Plan I used is quoted verbatim in Chapter III under “Law of Reason.”)

Ideas are inexhaustible, they are limitless.  Capture one, adopt it, create a Body for it, and make a real child out of it.  The child sometimes grows to be a giant.

John D. Rockefeller captured the idea to furnish light to millions of people, by the use of oil.  He gave the idea a Body.  At first it was a little, tiny baby, but twenty-five years later it was a billion-dollar giant.

Adolph Ochs, the late publisher of the New York Times, captured the idea to present the news truthfully and impartially and around this idea built one of the finest publications in the World.

Henry Ford captured an idea of transportation.  He gave the idea an automobile body, painted it black, and called it Model T, and turned it into a fortune of over a billion dollars.

Cyrus McCormick had an idea.  Around this idea, he evolved a reaper to cut and bind the wheat all in the same operation.  The International Harvester Corporation was the result.

Edison gave his idea a body – “The Phonograph.  His Master’s Voice.”  He certainly had no worries about where the next meal was coming from.

All those who have made contributions in the form of services, inventions, discoveries and science, have given their idea either a Body or a Plan.  An idea can mean nothing until it is incorporated into a Plan or built into a Body.

A dwelling house, an office building, a bed, a chair, a desk, a locomotive, an automobile, a steamboat, a Declaration of Independence, a Democracy, a Republic and even a Peace Treaty, are all ideas someone has given a Body or a Plan.  An idea to be of service must be incorporated into a means of conveyance.

The Idea of Democracy (People Rule) had been in the process of development for three thousand years before Thomas Jefferson incorporated the Idea into the Declaration of Independence.  In this immortal document, Jefferson denned the Idea of Democracy in these words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

This is the soul and essence of Democracy setting forth the purpose and object of Democracy.  The Declaration of Independence gave the Idea of Democracy a Plan on which to work, and laid the foundation for a Constitution and our present American form of government.

An idea takes form as it is conceived in word, thought, thing or action, according to your belief in it.  Believe in your idea, concentrate on it, give it a Plan or a Body.  The minute you concentrate on your Idea, new thoughts, new ideas, new measures, new ways and new methods are opened up to help make it a reality.  Drop a pebble into a pool of water.  It starts a series of ripples that expand until they encompass the whole pool.  This is what happens when you give your idea a Plan.  It seems that you tap that great creative force within.  It turns that dynamic hidden something from within into a thousand friends all eager and willing to help you.  It makes others feel about your idea the way you feel.  It gives you all the power necessary to put your idea into action.  You can persuade and convince.  It makes the idea a vital, living force, the most subtle and irresistible force in the world.  The idea strengthens your character and gives form, color, essence and substance to that which you desire.  You can outstrip every unfavorable situation, solve all problems, and master every condition that stands in the way between you and the accomplishment of your idea.  You can have anything you want – anything your heart desires.  You can turn your Ideas into Money.  Try it.

The State of Self-Supremacy

Man is inherently master over everything in his own life, because the principle of his being contains the possibility of complete mastership; and the realization of this principle produces the attitude of self-supremacy.

While mind is in this attitude, only those impressions are formed that are consciously selected; consequently, only those thoughts are created that conform to the purpose that may predominate in mind at the time.

To remain constantly in the attitude of self-supremacy, is therefore the secret of original thinking; and since the mastery of fate comes directly from original thinking, everything that interferes with the attitude of self-supremacy must be eliminated completely.

The most serious obstacle to this attitude is the belief that man is, for the greater part, the product of his environment; and that man cannot change to any extent until a change is first produced in his environment.

The result of this belief is the attitude of self-submission; and the more deeply this belief is felt, the more completely does man submit himself to the influence of his surroundings.

While mind is in this attitude, it has only a partial control over the process of thinking; it accepts willingly every impression that may enter through the senses, and permits the creation of thought in the likeness of those impressions without the slightest discrimination.

To remove the attitude of self-submission, man must cease to believe that he is controlled by environment, and must establish all his thinking upon the conviction that he is inherently master over his entire domain.

This, however, may appear to be not only impossible, but absurd, when considered in the presence of the fact that man is controlled by environment.  To tell a man to cease to believe as true that which he knows to be true, may not, at first sight seem to contain any reason; but at second sight it proves itself to mean the same as to tell a man to leave the darkness and enter the light.

When man ceases to believe that he is controlled by environment, he departs from a belief that is detrimental; and when he begins to realize that he has the power to completely control himself, he enters a conviction that is favorable to the highest degree.

While he is in the attitude of self-submission, he is controlled by environment, and the belief that he is thus controlled, is true to him.  But when he enters the attitude of self-supremacy, he is not controlled by environment; therefore, the belief that he is controlled by environment is no longer true to him.  While we are in the dark, we can truthfully say that we are in darkness; but when we enter the light, we cannot say, truthfully, that we are in darkness.

There is such a thing as being influenced by conditions that exist in our surroundings; but when we transcend that influence we are in it no more; therefore, to say that we are in it when we are out of it, is to contradict ourselves.  And we equally contradict ourselves when we state that we are controlled by environment after we are convinced that we are inherently masters of everything in the personal life.  What is not true to us now, we should not admit now, even though it had been true to us for all previous time.

To state that you are controlled by environment, and to permit that belief to possess your mind, is to submit yourself almost completely to the control of environment.

To recognize the principle of your being, and to realize that within that principle the power of complete supremacy does exist; to establish yourself absolutely upon that principle, and to state that you are not controlled by environment, is to depart from the control of environment.

While you are conscious of the principle of self-supremacy, you are unconscious of the influence of environment; therefore, to speak the truth, you must declare that you are complete master in your own domain.

When you know that the possibility of self-supremacy is within you, you cannot state truthfully that it is not there; and to state, in the presence of your knowledge of self‑supremacy, that you are controlled by environment, is the same as to state that there is no self-supremacy.

The very moment that you admit the possibility of self-supremacy, the control of environment is no longer a real fact to you; because in the state of self-supremacy, it is not possible for the control of environment to exist.

When man discovers the state of self-supremacy, he can no longer believe in the control of environment as a principle; and is therefore compelled to declare that the control of environment is no longer true to him.  And, as he is permitted to speak only for himself, and judge only his own life, he must refuse absolutely to believe in the control of environment under any condition whatever.

To believe that others are controlled by environment, is to judge where he has no authority, and also to place himself once again in the belief that environment controls man.  To place himself in that belief is to enter the attitude of self-submission, and submit himself to the influence of everything that enters his sphere of existence.

It is therefore evident that the principal reason why those who know of self-supremacy do not master fate, is because they are not true to their own convictions.  They believe that the principle of self-supremacy exists, but they also believe that the control of environment exists.  They try to believe both to be true at the same time, which is impossible.

If the one exists as a living power in the life of a person, the other does not exist in the life of that person.  1t would be just as reasonable to believe that light and darkness could exist in the same place at the same time.

To try to believe in the idea of self-supremacy and the control of environment at the same time, is to live in confusion; and he who lives in confusion controls practically nothing.  He is therefore more or less controlled by everything,

When man is convinced that he is, in himself, master over his life, he can no longer believe that his life is controlled by environment.  He must absolutely reject the latter belief; both cannot be true to any one mind; therefore, every mind must decide which one of these beliefs to accept as absolutely true, and which one to reject as absolutely untrue.

The mind that does not wholly reject one of the two, is trying to serve two masters, which is impossible.  He who tries to serve two masters will serve the one only, and that one will be the false one; because whoever tries to serve two masters is false to himself, and will consequently serve that which is false.  In this connection it may be questioned how we know that the principle of self-supremacy does exist; and how we know that complete mastership is inherent in man.

But we do know; because man does exercise complete mastership over certain parts of his being at certain times; and the fact that he does this proves the existence of the principle.

If the principle of self-supremacy did not exist, man could not exercise complete control over anything at any time; but every mind demonstrates supremacy many times every hour.

The mastership exercised over mind and body in various ways may be confined to limited spheres of action; but within those spheres of action the mastership is complete.  And those spheres will expand constantly as the principle of self-supremacy is applied on a larger and a larger scale.

Since the principle of complete control exists in man, there is a way to apply that principle in everything, and at all times.  But to accomplish this, the attitude of self-supremacy must prevail at all times, and under all conditions. 

While man is in the attitude of self-supremacy, he exercises complete control over certain things in his life; but when he enters the belief that he is controlled or influenced by other things, he leaves the attitude of self-supremacy, and ceases to exercise his complete control.

In the present state of human development, the average mind is so constituted that it oscillates from one state to another, remaining the greater part of the time in the attitude of self-submission; due principally to the fact that we are seldom absolutely true to the higher conviction, and also because we try to think that both beliefs are true at the same time.

Consequently, the great essential for man in his present state is to accept the high conviction as an absolute truth, and be true to that truth every moment of existence.

To be true to that truth he must refuse absolutely to believe that he can be controlled or influenced by anything or anybody.  He must depart completely from the belief in the control of other powers, and must recognize in himself the only power to control -the power to control completely, everything in his own domain.

Nor is this a contradiction, because when man enters the consciousness of self-supremacy, he cannot submit his self to any outside influence; therefore, there are no outside influences in action in his life.  And when this is the case he cannot believe in the existence of outside influences, as far as he is concerned.  When nothing is trying to control him, he cannot truthfully say that he is being controlled, nor even that he is liable to be controlled.

When man is in a state of self-supremacy, he is in a state where no influence from without exists; he is in a world where the power of self-mastery is the only controlling power; therefore, he cannot truthfully recognize any other.

While in the attitude of self-submission, your mind is open to all kinds of impressions from without; and consequently, your thinking will be suggested to you by your environment.  The result is that you will become like your environment, and will think, act and live as your environment may suggest.

If your environment be inferior, you will think inferior thoughts, live an inferior life, and commit deeds that are low or perverse, so long as you are in the attitude of self-submission.  But if you should submit yourself to a better environment, your life, thoughts, and deeds would naturally become better.  1n each case you would be the representation of the impressions that enter through the senses.

However, the very moment you pass from a superior environment to one that is inferior, you will begin to change for the worse, unless you have in the meantime attained a degree of self-supremacy.

To enter a superior environment will not of itself develop self-supremacy, nor the art of original thinking; because so long as you permit yourself to be influenced by environment, you prevent your mind from gaining consciousness of the principle of self-supremacy.

A change of environment, therefore, will not give man the power to master his fate.  This power comes only through a change of thought.

While in the attitude of self-supremacy your mind is not open to impressions from any source; but you can place your mind, at will, in the responsive attitude, so that it may receive impressions from any source that you may select.

By proper selection, consciousness can, in this way, be trained to express itself only through those mental channels that reach the superior side of things, and thereby come in contact with the unlimited possibilities of things.

From impressions received through this contact with unlimited possibilities, mind will be able to form original thoughts that embody superior powers and attainments; and as man becomes like his thoughts, he will, through this process, become superior.

Instead of being controlled by the impressions received from environment, he will control those impressions, and use them as material in the construction of his own larger life, and the greater destiny that must follow.

While mind is in the attitude of self-supremacy, man’s contact with the world will not affect him contrary to the way he desires to be affected; because he controls the impressions that come from without, and can completely change their natures before they are accepted in consciousness.  Or, he may refuse to accept them entirely.

In the midst of adversity he does not permit the adverseness of the circumstances to impress his mind, but opens his mind to be impressed by the great power that is back of the adversity.  His mind is not impressed by the misdirection of power, but by the power itself.

Therefore, instead of being disturbed, he is made stronger.

There is something of value to be gained from every disagreeable condition, because within every condition there is power, and there are always greater possibilities latent than the surface indicates.

Through original thinking these greater possibilities are discerned; and when mind is in the attitude of self‑supremacy, it may choose to be impressed by the greater possibilities only, thus providing more material for the reconstruction of man, and his destiny, on a larger and superior scale.

It is therefore evident that self-supremacy is indispensable; and it is attained by placing all life, all thought and all action upon the principle that man is inherently master over everything in his life; and by refusing absolutely to believe that we can be controlled by environment under any condition whatever.
