I really enjoy studying works by Napoleon Hill.  I know - some of it (including today's addition to The Free Success Manual Download Library) is 90 years young.  Think and Grow Rich was first published 73 years ago.  Yet, there is something so timeless about Hill's classic Success Manuals.

In today's world, where much, if not most, of our information is obtained via the Internet, I find so much lacking in the communicated message.  For me, a 500-word robot post on an autoblog is not capable of providing anything substantive, meaningful and practical.  Indeed, the basis for so much of these graveyard sites is not to provide information, but rather to use snipets of information to attract some level of traffic to the site for advertising purposes.

Napoleon Hill's works, on the other hand, are at the opposite end of the spectrum.  His deep, thorough analysis of the fundamentals of attaining Success, Wealth and Prosperity are as sound today as they were when originally written.  Consider the 12,000 men and women he studied just for "The Magic Ladder to Success" - the subject of today's post.  The great thing about Napoleon Hill is that he already did all of the work for us so we don't have to spend the next 20 years engaging is such an evolved project.  What a treasure trove of useful information!

The key to gaining the most out of any of Napoleon Hill's works is to never, never simply read the book and then return it to the bookshelf to collect dust.  Hill's books, articles and essays are true working Success Manuals to be studied in continuum, consulted consistently, and actively implemented into daily life.  Yes, we MUST put Hill's concepts into action; otherwise, his efforts are of no use.

The version of "The Magic Ladder to Success" the subject of today's post is not the lengthier book version, but the essay that appeared in Napoleon Hill's Magazine in April 1921.  It is a great introduction to the greater work that was published years later.  A true Success Manual for the ages for everyone.  Enjoy!

With respect to any particular Goal, at any point in time (and regardless of the number, nature and extent of all Goals, for we all have many) you are either moving towards your Goal or away from it.  There is no in between.  Standing still doesn’t count, for if you are not progressing forward, then you are moving backwards.  As such, if you truly Desire to attain the Goal, it is highly critical to know whether you are progressing forward in the right direction or whether you are merely moving backwards.  If you are NOT moving towards your Goal, then you MUST know that fact AND you MUST find out why.

Success Key: S.M.A.R.T. Goal Achievement Method – Part 2: MEASURABILITY

Last week, we opened a discussion on the SMART Goal Achievement Method – a precise and highly effective system that significantly assists you in the process of working towards a Goal, thereby greatly increasing your likelihood of ultimate Success.

As you may recall, SMART is an acronym for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time.  In last week’s post we addressed in detail the first element of the SMART Method: “S” or Specificity.  Today, we will take a close look at the “M” or Measurability.

On its surface, there probably doesn’t seem much to say about Measurability.  Your initial response may have been, “okay, the Goal must be measurable,” or “progress towards the Goal must be measurable.”  But it is more than that.  And, when we examine why progress must be measurable, we come to a greater understanding of the Goal and Success attainment process, thereby increasing our levels of awareness and increasing the likelihood that we will Succeed.

Measurability is really a four-fold element.  Measurability means that: 1) you must be capable of measuring your progress as you work towards your Goal (i.e., your Goal must be Specific enough (the “S”) so that at any point in time anyone may objectively determine whether or not the Goal has been achieved), 2) you implement a system capable of periodically measuring your progress towards your Goal, 3) you actually use your system of measuring your progress towards your Goal, thereby collecting valuable information of your progress and, if you are not progressing towards the Goal, why not, and 4) in response to the information collected through your progress measuring system, you take appropriate remedial or corrective action that will bring you closer to achieving your Goal, with the action comprising both speed/efficiency and/or direction towards the Goal.

Now this may all seem like quite a bit of work, but in practical reality, it truly isn’t.  In fact, using your Goal progress system – whatever it may be – will save you untold amounts of time in the long run, and may even be the saving grace that keeps ultimate failure at bay.

With respect to any particular Goal, at any point in time (and regardless of the number, nature and extent of all Goals, for we all have many) you are either moving towards your Goal or away from it.  There is no in between.  Standing still doesn’t count, for if you are not progressing forward, then you are moving backwards.  As such, if you truly Desire to attain the Goal, it is highly critical to know whether you are progressing forward in the right direction or whether you are merely moving backwards.  If you are NOT moving towards your Goal, then you MUST know that fact AND you MUST find out why.

A well established Goal progress system will answer both questions.  It will allow you to evaluate – in an objective fashion – your progress, and if you not making progress, why not.

Why is this so critical?  Because if you determine that you are not moving towards your Goal and you have objectively identified why not, then you are in position to take remedial, corrective ACTION to get you back on track.  That is how ALL Success is attained and ALL Goals achieved.  Through this evaluation process, the individual is able to determine whether or not they are moving towards the Goal, and if not, then why not, and in response, the appropriate corrective ACTION may be taken.  It is the only way.

The best laid plans (Definiteness of Plan) at the beginning of any venture rarely will bring you directly to your destination.  You must modify your trip along the way.  It is HOW Success is Realized!

Measuring Progress. A well established Goal progress system MUST anwer two questions: 1) Whether you are moving towards your Goal, and 2) If not, why?

There’s more to Measurability and we will continue this discussion in our next Success Key post on the subject of SMART.  But, there are some great take-aways from this discussion which you may adopt and implement immediately.

First, take an inventory of ALL of your Goals.  Okay, I know you have many.  But, in each case, to what extent have you implemented “Measurability?”  Again, Measurability means:

1. You must be capable of measuring your progress as you work towards your Goal (i.e., your Goal must be Specific enough (the “S”) so that at any point in time anyone may objectively determine whether or not the Goal has been achieved),
2. You implement a system capable of periodically measuring your progress towards your Goal,
3. You actually use your system of measuring your progress towards your Goal, thereby collecting valuable information as to your progress and, if you are not progressing towards the Goal, WHY NOT, and
4. In response to the information collected through your progress measuring system, you take appropriate remedial or corrective ACTION (or, as Anthony Robbins would say, "MASSIVE ACTION") that will bring you closer to achieving your Goal, with the ACTION comprising both speed/efficiency and/or direction towards the Goal.

If you do not have a progress measurement system in place, no matter how “primitive” it may be, you will not be able to determine if you are moving towards your Goal or away from it.  And, as pointed out last week, if your Goal lacks Specificity (the “S” in SMART), then you will not even be able to implement the “M.”  So, if you haven’t done last week’s homework and refined any non-specific, vague or ambiguous Goals (they must be objectified so that any third party can determine when the Goal is achieved), get going on that so that you can move onto the “M.”

This is very important stuff.

Super Success Key: Put LIFE into Every Action TODAY to Attain Success Tomorrow

Today's Success Key post is Part 4 of a 5-Part Series from "How to Get What You Want" by Success Master, Wallace D. Wattles.  In Part 2, Success Key No. 15: Active Power-Consciousness, we were introduced to the concept of "Power Consciousness."  Today, we learn that by using it in the present moment - today - we can achieve the results that we seek - tomorrow.

"Power Consciousness" is defined by Wattles as:

Power-Consciousness is what you feel when you know that you can do a thing; and you know HOW to do the thing.  If I can cause you to KNOW that you can succeed, and to know that you know HOW to succeed, I have placed success within your grasp; for if you know that you can do a thing and know that you know how to do it, it is impossible that you should fail to do it, if you really try.  When you are in full Power-Consciousness, you will approach the task in an absolutely successful frame of mind.  Every thought will be a successful thought, every action a successful action; and if every thought and action is successful, the sum-total of all your actions cannot be failure.

So, fellow Success Students - read on and fire-up your Power Consciousness NOW.  Taking Control by Thought and Action is Activating your Power-Consciousness.  KNOW that anything is possible and that you are capable of achieving anything you strongly Desire.

Put Life into Every Action

You can obtain what you want only by applying your faculties to your work and your environment; you become able to apply your faculties successfully by acquiring Power-Consciousness; and you go forward by a concentration on today’s work, and by doing perfectly everything that can be done at the present time.  You can get what you want in the future only by concentrating all your energies upon the constructive use of whatever you are in relation with today.  An indifferent or half-hearted use of the elements in today’s environment will be fatal to tomorrow’s attainment.

Do not desire for today what is beyond your ability to get today; but be sure you get today the very best that can be had.  Never take less than the very best that can be had at the present time; but do not waste energy by desiring what cannot be had at the present time.  If you always have the best that can be had, you will continue to have better and better things, because it is a fundamental principle in the universe that life shall continually advance into more life, and into the use of more and better things; this is the principle which causes evolution.  But if you are satisfied with less than the best that can be had, you will cease to move forward.

Ever transaction and relation of today whether it be business, domestic or social, must be made a stepping stone to what you want in the future; and to accomplish this you must put into each more than enough life to fill it.  There must be surplus power in everything you do.  It is this surplus power which causes advancement and gets you what you want; where there is no surplus power there is no advancement and no attainment.  It is the surplus of life above and beyond the functions of present environment which causes evolution; and evolution is advancing into more life, or getting what you want.

Suppose, for instance, you are in trade or a profession, and wish to increase your business; it will not do, when you sell goods or service to make the matter a merely perfunctory transaction, taking the customer’s money, giving him good value, and letting him go away feeling that you had no interest in the matter beyond giving him a fair deal and profiting thereby.  Unless he feels that you have a personal interest in him and his needs, and that you are honestly desirous to increase his welfare, you have made a failure and are losing ground.  When you can make every customer feel that you are really trying to advance his interests as well as your own, your business will grow.  It is not necessary to give premiums, or heavier weights or better values than others give to accomplish this; it is done by putting life and interest into every transaction, however small.

If you desire to change your avocation, make your present business a stepping-stone to the one you want.  As long as you are in your present business, fill it with life; the surplus will tend toward what you want.  Take a live interest in every man, woman and child you meet in either a business or social way, and sincerely desire the best for them; they will soon begin to feel that your advancement is a matter of interest to them and they will unite their thoughts for your good.  This will form a battery of power in your favor and will open ways of advancement for you.

If you are an employee and desire promotion, put life into everything you do; put in more than enough life and interest to fill each piece of work.  But do not be servile; never be a flunkey; and above all things avoid the intellectual prostitution which is the vice of our times in many trades and most professions.  I mean by this the being a mere hired apologist for and defender of immorality, graft, dishonesty, or vice in any form.  The intellectual prostitute may rise in the service, but he is a lost soul.  Respect yourself; be absolutely just to all; put LIFE into every act and thought and fix Power-Conscious thought upon the fact that you are entitled to promotion; it will come as soon as you can more than fill your present place in every day.  If it does not come from you present employer it will come from another; it is the law that whosoever more than fills his present place must be advanced.  But for this law there could be no evolution, and no progress; but mark well what follows.

It is not enough that you should merely put surplus life into your business relations.  You will not advance far if you are a good business man or employee, but a bad husband, an unjust father, or, an untrustworthy friend.  Your failure in these respects will make you incapable of using your success for the advancement of life, and so you will not come under the operation of the constructive law.  Many a man who fulfills the law in business is prevented from progressing because he is unkind to his wife, or deficient in some other relation of life.  To come under the operation of the evolutionary force you must more than fill EVERY present relation.  A telegraph operator desired to get away from the key, and get onto a small farm; and he began to move in that direction by being “good” to his wife.  He “courted” her, without any reference to his desire; and from being half indifferent she became interested and eager to help; soon they had a little piece of ground in the edge of the town, and she raised poultry and superintended a garden while he “pounded the key”; now they have a farm and he has obtained his desire.  You can secure the co-operation, not only of your wife but of all the people around you by putting life and interest into all your relations with them.

Put into every relation, business, domestic or social, more than enough life to fill that relation; have faith, which is Power-Consciousness; know what you want in the future, but have today the very best that can be obtained today; never be satisfied at any time with less than the best that can be had at that time, but never waste energy in desiring what is not to be had now; use all things for the advancement of life for yourself and for all with whom you are related in any way.  Follow out these principles of action and you cannot fail to get what you want; for the universe is so constructed that all things must work together for your good.

I absolutely love this little book.  My first copy came as a free supplement to The Science of Getting Rich and it appeared after that work in the hard copy version that I purchased.  When I first bought The Science of Getting Rich, I was not initially aware that How to Get What You Want was included.  Interestingly, however, when I began to struggle with The Science of Getting Rich (in terms of being put off by the strange ideas articulated by Wattles), I flipped to the back of the book and began reading How to Get What You Want.  As you might guess, I finished that book first and only afterwards, did I continue with (and complete) the more popular book, The Science of Getting Rich.

While The Science of Getting Rich remains a classic Success Manual in the arsenal of many Success Masters and Students, How to Get What You Want is my favorite of the two, beating out Wattle's more popular work.  It is direct, concise and easy to read.  It can be devoured quickly for a quick injection of Success inspiration; yet, it can be studied (the more appropriate way of digesting a Success Manual) and assimilated into one's own Life Success Manual.  And, importantly, it makes perfect sense - particularly on an initial reading.  In fact, I would recommend reading it before attempting The Science of Getting Rich, as it makes a great "table setter."

Apply the principles set forth within How to Get What You Want and you will begin to see immediate results.  But, of course, one must be a dedicated and sincere Success Student!

WHATEVER may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.  No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with.

A man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich.

The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining.

Man's right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich.

In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way; to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little.  No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more.  The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful.

The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants.  Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness.  Every person naturally wants to become all that they are capable of becoming; this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be.  Success in life is becoming what you want to be; you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them.  To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.

The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life.

There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich.  The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is praise worthy.  The man who does not desire to live more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man who does not desire to have money enough to buy all he wants is abnormal.

There are three motives for which we live; we live for the body, we live for the mind, we live for the soul.  No one of these is better or holier than the other; all are alike desirable, and no one of the three - body, mind, or soul - can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression.  It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny mind or body; and it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body or soul.

We are all acquainted with the loathsome consequences of living for the body and denying both mind and soul; and we see that real life means the complete expression of all that man can give forth through body, mind, and soul.  Whatever he can say, no man can be really happy or satisfied unless his body is living fully in every function, and unless the same is true of his mind and his soul.  Wherever there is unexpressed possibility, or function not performed, there is unsatisfied desire.  Desire is possibility seeking expression, or function seeking performance.

Man cannot live fully in body without good food, comfortable clothing, and warm shelter; and without freedom from excessive toil.  Rest and recreation are also necessary to his physical life.

He cannot live fully in mind without books and time to study them, without opportunity for travel and observation, or without intellectual companionship.

To live fully in mind he must have intellectual recreations, and must surround himself with all the objects of art and beauty he is capable of using and appreciating.

To live fully in soul, man must have love; and love is denied expression by poverty.

By thought, the thing you want is brought to you; by action you receive it. Whatever your action is to be, it is evident that you must act NOW. There is never any time but now, and there never will be any time but now.  If you are ever to begin to make ready for the reception of what you want, you must begin NOW.

A man's highest happiness is found in the bestowal of benefits on those he loves; love finds its most natural and spontaneous expression in giving.  The man who has nothing to give cannot fill his place as a husband or father, as a citizen, or as a man.  It is in the use of material things that a man finds full life for his body, develops his mind, and unfolds his soul.  It is therefore of supreme importance to him that he should be rich.

It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich; if you are a normal man or woman you cannot help doing so.  It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to the Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies.  If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God and humanity; for you can render to God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.
