Success Key: The Law of Compensation, Part I

The Law of Compensation, Part I

The Law of Compensation: Defined

In the Success Post that accompanies “The Law of Success – Lesson Nine: The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For” by Napoleon Hill (Posted in The Success Manual Free Download Library and The Napoleon Hill Success Library on January 22, 2011), we discussed, among other matters, The Law of Compensation.

Interestingly, after that Post was published, I came across several references to The Law of Compensation, which provided me with the Opportunity to further reflect upon the Law – what it is, how it works and how we may better invoke it to our benefit.  That reflection and study is embodied in this Post and the two to follow.

The Law of Compensation is such a simple law; yet, it works with amazing precision in our Lives – each and every day.

What exactly is the Law of Compensation?

Quite simply, it is that principle that “we reap what we sow.”  As St. Paul stated approximately two thousand years ago: “Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.” Gal. 6:7.

In this case, the sowing concerns the Garden of Thought, Emotion and Action.  What we think, how we feel and how we act all determines what is returned to us – with mathematical precision.

In his master classic, Working with the Law, Raymond Holliwell defines it thusly: “Compensation means equal returns for that which is given; it means a balance of that quality or service that is extended to another . . .  You can only build on that which you create.”

It is also known as Karma and “what goes around, comes around.”

Or, as two, young Brits in the 1960s lyrically penned it, “And in the end, the Love you take is equal to the Love you make.”  Perfectly stated.  (“The End” is a song by The Beatles composed by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon/McCartney) for the album Abbey Road.  It was the last song recorded collectively by all four of the Beatles, and is the final song of a 16-minute medley that dominates side two of the LP version of the album.)

Throughout his illustrious career as a preeminent Success Teacher, Napoleon Hill often referred to the Law of Compensation as “the Golden Rule” (he also referred to it, as noted in Lesson Nine of The of Success in Sixteen Lessons, as The Law of Compensation).  In an article in Hill’s Success Unlimited magazine, Napoleon Hill explained it thusly:

“Inherent in the principle of applied faith is the sustained application of the Golden Rule in your daily life.  For more than four thousand years, men have been preaching the Golden Rule as a suitable rule of conduct, but, unfortunately, the world has accepted the letter while totally missing the spirit of this universal injunction.  We have accepted the Golden Rule merely as a sound rule of ethical conduct but we have failed to understand the law upon which it is based.

“The law is this: We reap what we sow.  When you select a rule of conduct which you use to guide yourself in your transactions with others, you will be fair and just if you know that you are setting in motion a power that will run its course (for good or bad) in the lives of others, returning finally to help or hinder you according to its nature.

“It is your privilege to deal unjustly with others, but if you understand the basis for the Golden Rule, you must know that your unjust dealings will come home to roost.  The law does not mean merely the flinging back upon you your acts of injustice and unkindness toward others; it goes much further and returns to you the results of every thought you release.

“Therefore, not only is it advisable to 'do unto others as you wish them to do unto you,' but you must 'think of others as you wish them to think of you,' to avail yourself fully of the benefits of this great universal law.”

Similarly, Holliwell further notes that, “Sooner or later we must come face to face with this Law of Compensation, and inevitably, our own comes to us – and only what is our own.”

Because the Law of Compensation works to equally balance our “reaping” with our “sowing,” the Law may be invoked with accuracy and precision.  As Raymond Holliwell again profoundly instructs in Working with the Law:

“The Law that we reap what we sow is mathematically accurate.  Each experience through which we pass operates ultimately for our good.  If we attract the unpleasant, it is often because some dormant or neglected phase of our nature needs to be awakened and developed; also, we learn from the experience to create something better.  Hence the degree of contentment and satisfaction attained in whatever sphere of life we may dwell is largely dependent upon our ability to use constructively the experiences of life; for, in every case, the Law of Attraction will only bring what may serve us in our upward development.  To interpret this Law in a simple form, it should be stated that whatever we attract, we require and whatever we need is always good.  This is a correct attitude to adopt, because all experience is for our good and we must be able to see it in that light.”

Consider the last two sentences of this passage from Holliwell again: “To interpret this Law in a simple form, it should be stated that whatever we attract, we require and whatever we need is always good.  This is a correct attitude to adopt, because all experience is for our good and we must be able to see it in that light.”

If we can truly comprehend the full meaning and import of what Holliwell states here, the magnificence of the Law of Compensation cannot be overstated.  Whatever we attract, we require.  Whatever we require (need) is Good.  Therefore, ALL experience (what we attract) is for our Good.

God seeks to draw out the Good in us through each and every experience – the Desirable and the Undesirable.  As such, under the Law of Compensation, every experience is not only a manifestation (Effect) of what we have sowed (Cause) in the past (Result), every experience is a Divine Opportunity for us to GROW and PROSPER - Spiritually, Emotionally, Intellectually, Physically and Financially.  In fact, I would take this a step further and submit that every experience is a Divine-Mandated Opportunity to GROW and PROSPER.

In that sense, the Law of Compensation is more than just “what goes around, comes around.”  The Law of Compensation is our Infinite Creator providing us with what we need.

“We must be able to see it in that light.”

Last night I picked up the phenomenal Success Manual "The Secret of the Ages" by Robert Collier, which I have read several times over and more.

As is my habit, I randomly selected a chapter to read.  My selection was Chapter XV, entitled, "The Master of Your Fate."

I don't know the last time I read this particular passage, but it sure resonated with me last night.  It was as if I had never read it before, yet I know I have as the chapter was filled with notes, underlining, highlighting, etc.

Well, the chapter had such an impact on me that I couldn't wait to reproduce it as a Success Passage today.  And, so, here it is.

Where will you be at 65?  Five men in six at the age of 65 are living on charity.  Just one in twenty is able to live without working at 65.

That is what the American Bankers Association found when it took one hundred healthy men at 25 and traced them to 65.

These hundred were healthy to start with.  They all had the same chance for success.  The difference lay in the way they used their MINDS.  Ninety-five out of one hundred just do the tasks that are set them.  They have no faith in themselves – no initiative – none of the courage that starts things.  They are always directed or controlled by someone else.

At 65, where will you be?  Dependent or independent?  Struggling for a living – accepting charity from someone else – or at the top of the heap?

“I Am the Master of My Fate”

Until you have learned that, you will never attain life’s full success.  Your fate is in your own hands.  You have the making of it.  What you are going to be six months or a year from now depends upon what you think today.

So make your choice now: Are you going to bow down to matter as the only power?  Are you going to look upon your environment as something that has been wished upon you and for which you are in no way responsible?  Or are you going to try to realize in your daily life that matter is merely an aggregation of protons and electrons subject entirely to the control of Mind, that your environment, your success, your happiness, are all of your own making, and that if you are not satisfied with conditions as they are, you have but to visualize them as you would have them be in order to change them?

The former is the easier way right now – the easy way that leads to the hell of poverty and fear and old age.

But the latter is the way that brings you to your Heart’s Desire.

And merely because this Power of Universal Mind is invisible, is that any reason to doubt it?  The greatest powers of Nature are invisible.  Love is invisible, but what greater power is there in life?  Joy is invisible, happiness, peace, contentment.  The radio is invisibles yet you hear it.  It is a product of the law governing sound waves.  Law is invisible, yet you see the manifestation of different laws every day.  To run a locomotive, you study the law of applying power, and you apply that law when you make the locomotive go.

These things are not the result of invention.  The law has existed from the beginning.  It merely waited for man to learn how to apply it.  If man had known how to call upon Universal Mind to the right extent, he could have applied the law of sound waves, the law of steam, ages ago.  Invention is merely a revelation and an unfoldment of Universal Wisdom.

That same Universal Wisdom knows millions of other laws of which man has not even a glimmering.  You can call upon It.  You can use that Wisdom as your own.  By thinking of things as they might be instead of as they are, you will eventually find some great Need.  And to find a need is the first step towards finding the supply to satisfy that need.  You’ve got to know what you are after, before you can send the Genie-of-your-Mind a-seeking of it in Universal Mind.

The Acre of Diamonds

You remember the story of the poor Boer farmer who struggled for years to glean a livelihood out of his rocky soil, only to give it up in despair and go off to seek his fortune elsewhere.  Years later, coming back to his old farm, he found it swarming with machinery and life – more wealth being dug out of it every day than he had ever dreamed existed.  It was the great Kimberley Diamond Mine!

Most of us are like that poor Boer farmer.  We struggle along under our surface power, never dreaming of the giant power that could be ours if we would but dig a little deeper – rouse that great Inner Self who can give us more even than any acre of diamonds.

As Orison Swett Marden put it:

“The majority of failures in life are simply the victims of their mental defeats.  Their conviction that they cannot succeed as others do robs them of that vigor and determination which self confidence imparts, and they don’t even half try to succeed.

“There is no philosophy by which a man can do a thing when he thinks he can’t.  The reason why millions of men are plodding along in mediocrity today, many of them barely making a living, when they have the ability to do something infinitely bigger, is because they lack confidence in themselves.  They don’t believe they can do the bigger thing that would lift them out of their rut of mediocrity and poverty; they are not winners mentally.

“The way always opens for the determined soul, the man of faith and courage.

“It is the victorious mental attitude, the consciousness of power, the sense of mastership, that does the big things in this world.  If you haven’t this attitude, if you lack self confidence, begin now to cultivate it.

“A highly magnetized piece of steel will attract and lift a piece of unmagnetized steel ten times its own weight.  Demagnetize that same piece of steel and it will be powerless to attract or lift even a feather’s weight.

“Now, my friends, there is the same difference between the man who is highly magnetized by a sublime faith in himself, and the man who is de-magnetized by his lack of faith, his doubts, his fears, that there is between the magnetized and the de-magnetized pieces of steel.  If two men of equal ability, one magnetized by a divine self confidence, the other demagnetized by fear and doubt, are given similar tasks, one will succeed and the other will fail.  The self confidence of the one multiplies his powers a hundred-fold; the lack of it subtracts a hundred-fold from the power of the other.”

Have you ever thought how much of your time is spent in choosing what you shall do, which task you will try, which way you shall go?  Every day is a day of decision.  We are constantly at crossroads, in our business dealings, our social relations, in our homes, there is always the necessity of a choice.  How important then that we have faith in ourselves and in that Infinite intelligence within.  “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.” “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

In this ever-changing material age, with seemingly complex forces all about us, we sometimes cry out that we are driven by force of circumstances.  Yet the fact remains that we do those things which we choose to do.  For even though we may not wish to go a certain way, we allow ourselves to pursue it because it offers the least resistance.

Now, how about you?  Are you taking active control of your own thought?  Are you imaging upon your mind only such things as you want to see realized?  Are you thinking healthy thoughts, happy thoughts, successful thoughts?

The difference between the successful man and the unsuccessful one is not so much a matter of training or equipment.  It is not a question of opportunity or luck.  It is just in the way they each of them look at things.

The successful man sees an opportunity, seizes upon it, and moves upward another rung on the ladder of success.  It never occurs to him that he may fail.  He sees only the opportunity, he visions what he can do with it, and all the forces within and without him combine to help him win.

The unsuccessful man sees the same opportunity, he wishes that he could take advantage of it, but he is fearful that his ability or his money or his credit may not be equal to the task.  He is like a timid bather, putting in one foot and then drawing it swiftly back again – and while he hesitates some bolder spirit dashes in and beats him to the goal.

Nearly every man can look back – and not so far back either with must of us – and say, “If I had taken that chance, I would be much better off now.”

You will never need to say it again, once you realize that the future is entirely within your own control.  It is not subject to the whims of fortune or the capriciousness of luck.  There is but one Universal Mind and that mind contains naught but good.  In it are no images of Evil.  From it comes no lack of supply.  Its ideas are as numberless as the grains of sand on the seashore.  And those ideas comprise all wealth, all power, all happiness.

You have only to image vividly enough on your subconscious mind the thing you wish, to draw from Universal Mind the necessary ideas to bring it into being.  You have only to keep in mind the experiences you wish to meet, in order to control your own future.

When Frank A. Vanderlip, former President of the National City Bank, was a struggling youngster, he asked a successful friend what one thing he would urge a young man to do who was anxious to make his way in the world.  “Look as though you have already succeeded,” his friend told him.  Shakespeare expresses the same thought in another way – “Assume a virtue if you have it not.”  Look the part.  Dress the part.  Act the part.  Be successful in your own thought first.  It won’t be long before you will be successful before the world as well.

David V. Bush, in his book “Applied Psychology and Scientific Living,” says:

“Man is like the wireless operator.  Man is subject to miscellaneous wrong thought currents if his mind is not in tune with the Infinite, or if he is not keyed up to higher vibrations than those of negation.

“A man who thinks courageous thoughts sends these courageous thought waves through the universal ether until they lodge in the consciousness of someone who is tuned to the same courageous key.  Think a strong thought, a courageous thought, a prosperity thought, and these thoughts will be received by someone who is strong, courageous and prosperous.

“It is just as easy to think in terms of abundance as to think in terms of poverty.  If we think poverty thoughts we become the sending and receiving stations for poverty thoughts.  We send out a ‘poverty’ mental wireless and it reaches the consciousness of some poverty-stricken ‘receiver.’ We get what we think.

“It is just as easy to think in terms of abundance, opulence and prosperity as it is to think in terms of lack, limitation and poverty.

“If a man will raise his rate of vibration by faith currents or hope currents, these vibrations go through the Universal Mind and lodge in the consciousness of people who are keyed to the same tune.  Whatever you think is sometime, somewhere, received by a person who is tuned to your thought key.

“If a man is out of work and he thinks thoughts of success, prosperity, harmony, position and growth, just as surely as his thoughts are things – as Shakespeare says – someone will receive his vibrations of success, prosperity, harmony, position and growth.

“If we are going to be timid, selfish, penurious and picayunish in our thinking, these thought waves which we have started in the universal ether will go forth until they come to a mental receiving station of the same caliber.  ‘Birds of a feather flock together,’ and minds of like thinking are attracted one to the other.

“If you need money, all you have to do is to send up your vibrations to a strong, courageous receiving station, and someone who can meet your needs will be attracted to you or you to him.”

When you learn that you are entitled to win – in any right undertaking in which you may be engaged – you will win.  When you learn that you have a right to a legitimate dominion over your own affairs, you will have dominion over them.  The promise is that we can do all things through the Mind that was in Christ.

Universal Mind plays no favorites.  No one human being has any more power than any other.  It is simply that few of us use the power that is in our hands.  The great men of the world are in no wise SUPER Beings.  They are ordinary creatures like you and me, who have stumbled upon the way of drawing upon their subconscious mind – and through it upon the Universal Mind.  Speaking of Henry Ford’s phenomenal success, his friend Thomas A. Edison said of him – “He draws upon his subconscious mind.”

The secret of being what you have it n you to be is simply this: Decide now what it is you want of life, exactly what you wish your future to be.  Plan it out in detail.  Vision it from start to finish.  See yourself as you are now, Being those things you have always wanted to do.  Make them REAL in your mind’s eye – feel them, live them, believe them, especially at the moment of going to sleep, when it is easiest to reach your subconscious mind – and you will soon be seeing them in real life.

It matters not whether you are young or old, rich or poor.  The time to begin is NOW.  It is never too late.  Remember those lines of Appleton’s:

The Wattles Prosperity Bible

 A Five Volume Compilation of the Works of Wallace D. Wattles

When Wallace Delois Wattles was growing up in the post-Civil War America, the country was undergoing major changes in the political, economic and social arenas.

While the South was rebuilding its battered infrastructure, the North, where Wattles lived, was prospering, both industrially and agriculturally.  This period, known as the Second Industrial Revolution, began in the mid-19^th century, with the growth and expansion of steel, petroleum, as well as chemical and electrical sectors; railways and steam ship industry also thrived in the still- young nation.

In fact, by the time the 19^th century came to a close and the new one dawned, corporate giants such as U.S. Steel and General Electric spawned the legendary tycoons by the names of Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew P. Mellon, and J.P. Morgan, among other renowned and often notorious wheelers and dealers of that era.

The extravagant lifestyles of these super-rich industrialists and financiers – which prompted Mark Twain to coin the phrase “Gilded Age” to describe the excesses of the wealthy people in the second half of the 1800s – did not, however, reflect the grim living conditions of the working class.   Historical records show that in 1890, when Wattles was 30, 11 million of America’s 12 million families earned less than $1,200 a year, with the average annual income of $380, well below the poverty line.

Not much is known today about Wattles’ life and family, but from the information that is available to us we can surmise that he was born into that modest – not to say poverty-stricken – milieu like the vast majority of his countrymen. 

We cannot say with any certainty that he was inspired by the well-heeled tycoons of the era, but we do know that he turned the art of getting rich into a science.

His philosophy about wealth is succinctly summed up in this quote: “Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.”

Putting together Wattles’ biography is a challenging task because very little is known about him.   Whether this dearth was a matter of modesty and humility or merely poor record-keeping we cannot guess, but anyone attempting to research Wattles’ life will hit a brick wall riddled with many gaps and holes.  For instance, his schooling remains a mystery, as does his family.  We know that he had a daughter, Florence, but have no information about his wife.  We also know that early on he worked on a farm and later as a lecturer in Indiana, as well as in some capacity at a Methodist Church, but have no clue about any other jobs he might have held.  We know he died young – at 51 – of “frail” health, but possess no details of what illness he suffered from.  He was a prolific writer, publishing scores of articles, essays and books.  Many of the articles and essays were published as compilations; others as single articles. However, specific details as to many of his published works are few.

What little we do know about his childhood and later life can be gleaned from the letters Florence wrote to Wattles’ publisher, Elizabeth Towne.   From those letters we can construct a sketchy portrait of a compassionate and caring man of profound convictions, and a prolific writer who believed his ideas would transform people’s lives.

Although Wattles remains – given the scarcity of information about him – somewhat of an enigma, he wrote some of the most powerful self-help books ever published.  As a matter of fact, the young farm boy grew up to be a trailblazer in the area of wealth-building, personal empowerment and success, a field that, while in its infancy during Wattles’ lifetime, blossomed as the “New Thought” era, and which today is a billion-dollar industry.  Indeed, the “self improvement” market in the U.S. alone is estimated as worth more than $13.9 billion in 2010.[1]

In a way, Wallace Delois Wattles’ life is a quintessential rags-to-riches story. 

He was born in 1860 in Illinois, and later lived in Indiana.  According to the 1880 US Federal Census, young Wallace was probably the only child of a gardener and a housewife.  He lived with his parents on a farm in Nunda Township, McHenry County, Illinois.  With little formal education, he spent his early years toiling as a farm laborer.  In those days, life on a farm was dismal, requiring long hours of backbreaking labor.  Even though new farm equipment was invented and introduced during that period, horses, oxen and people still provided the power that fueled the machines. 

Eking out a living from a farm, which relied heavily on weather-dependant crops, was a challenge then, as it is, though maybe to a lesser degree, now.   We do not know for sure whether this was the only work Wattles did in his youth, but his life at the time is reported to have been one of poverty, hardship, and failure.  We will never know for certain, but perhaps this strife had sparked Wattles’ desire to become successful and rich and to understand proper and healthy living. 

One of Florence’s messages to Mrs. Towne provides some insight into what drove her father to overcome his humble beginnings and ultimately led him to pen a series of highly successful self-help books:   “For years his life was cursed by poverty and the fear of poverty.  He was always scheming and planning to get for his family those things, which make the abundant life possible.”

In 1896, the 36-year-old Midwesterner attended a “convention of reformers” in Chicago, where he met George Davis Herron.   Two years Wattles’ junior, Herron was a controversial Congregational Church minister and professor of Applied Christianity at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he attracted attention for his radical religious views, namely a new philosophy called Christian Socialism.  A movement that originated in the mid-19th-century Europe, it combined the fundamentals of Socialism with the principles of Christianity as a means of helping the poor.

Florence wrote to Mrs. Towne that her father caught Herron’s social vision.  “I shall never forget the morning he came home,” she related.  “It was Christmas.  Mother had put her last dollar into a cuff box and we had placed it beneath an evergreen branch which served for our Christmas tree and which we had illuminated with tallow candles and strung with popcorn.  Finally Father came.  With that beautiful smile he praised the tree, said the cuff box was just what he had been wanting - and took us all in his arms to tell us of the wonderful social message of Jesus, the message which he later embodied in ‘A New Christ.’ From that day until his death he worked unceasingly to realize the glorious vision of human brotherhood.”

According to Florence, at one time her father had held a position in the Methodist Church, but was fired because of his “heresy,” possibly the Christian Socialism views, which were not quite compatible with the mainstream Christianity.  Two of his books, “A New Christ” and “Jesus: The Man and His Work” focused on Christianity from a Socialist perspective.  As a matter of fact, Wattles was so involved in the movement, that he twice ran as a Socialist candidate for two public offices:  in the Eighth Congressional District in 1908, and two years later, for the office of Prosecuting Attorney for Indiana’s Madison County’s 50th court district.  He lost both elections, but Florence became a delegate to the Socialist Party National Committee in 1912 and 1915.

Another new spiritual movement that Wattles embraced with zeal and conviction, and which had, in large measure, influenced his thinking and writing, was called New Thought.  This movement started to emerge in the second half of the 19^th century, at about the same time as Christian Socialism.

This was a turning point for Wattles, the moment that likely re-defined and re-directed his life to some degree. 

The movement, which remains active to this day, promotes the idea that all of life’s circumstances and events, whether positive or negative, be they physical or mental in nature, originate in the mind as a consequence of our thinking and beliefs, and, therefore, “right thinking” can change our lives positively. 

Like many thinkers and philosophers from a variety of churches and religious denominations, and even some secular groups and individuals as well, Wattles became a proponent of these metaphysical tenets relating to the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, creative visualization, and other essential life forces that formed the basis of his beliefs and writings.  Today the self-improvement and personal growth industry is a thriving, multi-billion-dollar sector, but in Wattles’ time it was still in its nascent stages.   The New Thought movement, however, marked an important milestone in the development of the self-help phenomenon.

Because of the unbridled optimism, positive energy, and personal empowerment inherent to the New Thought principles, Wattles, along with his contemporaries like Napoleon Hill, Frank Channing Haddock, Thomas Troward, William Walker Atkinson, and, a bit later, Dale Carnegie, had become one of the earliest self-help pioneers – people who believed in improving themselves and all the aspects of their lives by harvesting their spiritual and inner strengths.  Essentially, the mind can achieve whatever it can conceive.

Wattles’ brand of motivational self-improvement philosophy is best expressed in this quote of his: “The scientific use of thought consists in forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want; in holding fast to the purpose to get what you want; and in realizing with grateful faith that you do get what you want.”

Wattles discovered an outlet for his ideas in Nautilus, a magazine for New Thought writers founded in 1898 by Elizabeth Towne.  In it, Wattles found a fitting forum to advance his ideas and foster his writing skills.  As Florence explained: “When we came to Elwood (Indiana) three years ago, Father began a Sunday night lectureship in Indianapolis.  This was our only source of income.  Later he began to write for Nautilus and to word out his own philosophy.  He wrote almost constantly.  Then it was that he formed his mental picture.  He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality of power, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision.”

Wattles applied the New Thought principles to his own life through personal experimentation.  For example, he tested some of the health and food fads fashionable at that time, such as the “No Breakfast Plan,” before encouraging his readers to try out his theories on themselves. 

How a poor man with little education was able to form such a far-reaching vision and bring it to fruition with numerous books remains a mystery.  What is certain is that his works, at least by some assessments, are among the most powerful personal improvement books ever written.   

While Wattles authored numerous works, his best-known are likely the trilogy of “The Science of Being Rich” (1910), “The Science of Being Well” (1910) and “The Science of Being Great” (1911).  All three are fitting examples of self-improvement and personal success theories he had become known for, as demonstrated in Florence’s letter to Mrs.  Towne: “The supreme faith of the man never left him; never for a moment did he lose confidence in the power of the master Intelligence to right every wrong and to give to every man and woman his or her share of the good things of life.”

“The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way.  Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich.  Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor.”

The above quote is a paragraph from Chapter 2 of Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich,” a forerunner of every personal finance and self-help book ever written.  His statement that this pragmatic text is “intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward,” rings as true in the second decade of the 21^st century as it did when it was first published 100 years ago.  

Incredibly, there exists today million dollar self-help businesses founded solely on “The Science of Getting Rich.”

While many people believe that amassing wealth is a matter of hard work, luck, or a combination of both, Wattles promoted a more scientific approach.  “There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic,” he famously noted.  “There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches, and once these laws are learned and obeyed by anyone, that person will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

“The Science of Getting Rich,” still widely read and highly acclaimed today, laid ground for “The Science of Being Great,” in which Wattles stated that “Greatness is equally inherent in all, and may be manifested by all.  Every person may become great.”

The inspirational and motivational message is also clear in “The Science of Being Well,” where Wattles writes that the work is directed at “those who want health, and who want a practical guide and handbook, not a philosophical treatise.  It is an instructor in the use of the universal Principle of Life, and my effort has been to explain the way in so plain and simple a fashion that the reader, though he may have given no previous study to New Thought or metaphysics, may readily follow it to perfect health.  While retaining all essentials, I have carefully eliminated all non-essentials; I have used no technical, abstruse, or difficult language, and have kept the one point in view at all times.”   

The question that arises is whether Wattles successfully applied his New Thought beliefs and theories on how an average person can become rich, happy and healthy regardless of his or her circumstances to his own life.  From Florence’s correspondence to Mrs. Towne it would appear that he did.  Before his death in 1911 at 51, Florence reported that “he made lots of money, and had good health, except for his extreme frailty.”

There is no information on how many “regular” people who read Wattles’ works in the past century had been influenced by his message.  We do know, however, that the Australian New Thought writer Rhonda Byrne said her inspiration for the hit 2006 movie, “The Secret,” as well as the same-titled book, came from Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich.”  When she first opened the book in 2004, Byrne relates on her website, “Something inside of me had me turn the pages one by one, and I can still remember my tears hitting the pages as I was reading it.  It gave me a glimpse of The Secret and it was like a flame inside of my heart.” 

So in the end, the little-known life of Wallace Delois Wattles was, in many ways, a quintessentially American story of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps, succeeding against all odds, and influencing the lives of others.  In the words of his daughter Florence, “His life was truly the powerful life.”

Recently, we added "The Law and the Word" by Thomas Troward to The Success Manual Free Download Library.  Judge Troward, a brilliant writer and perhaps "the Godfather of New Thought," is not easy reading by any means (at least not for me).  As a result, despite his legacy with regard to the New Thought movement and the impact of his teachings on modern day Success Masters (e.g., Bob Proctor, Anthony Robbins, etc.), we have been a little hesitant to bring his works into our online fold. 

Were we wrong. Hundreds of copies of The Law and the Word have already been downloaded. 

Which brings us to today's addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library: "The Creative Process in the Individual" by Thomas Troward.  Out of all of his works, I personally find Creative Process easier to assimilate and of immediate practical value.  Yes, it has its esoteric qualities as do all of Troward's work; but, it does provide an understandable dissertation on exactly what the title of the work states: The Creative Process in the Individual.

As we noted in our previous post on Troward's work, a primary focus of  Creative Process is, as Troward expressly states, "The triumph of principle over precedent, the working out of an Idea to its logical conclusions in spite of the accumulated testimony of all past exerpience to the contrary."  In other words, even though the Law of Cause and Effect (the "Law of Laws" according to Emerson) is in full force and effect, we need to be mindful that what happened yesterday has absolutely no bearing on what we do today, unless we allow it.  Each day is a fresh start.  Yesterday's "failures" belong to yesterday. 

The human race has been able to advance as a result of the Triumph of Principle Over Precedent.  Each day brings new Opportunity for Growth - and Grow we do (to the extent we allow ourselves).  And, Growth of any kind ultimately brings Success and purifes the Soul. 

A Cautionary Note: The Creative Process in the Individual, like all Success Manuals - but particularly so here - is NOT a book that one simply picks up, reads and puts back on the book shelf to collect dust.  It IS a Success Manual, to be read and studied with purpose and intent.  The conveyed words of Wisdom are to be savored, absorbed into our consciousness and analyzed.  To approach this  work any other way is a waste of time and energy. 

Lastly, please keep in mind my prior explanation on the "ether" as you read this book to avoid any confusion.

Today's entry in The Success Manual Free Download Library is a true "manual."  The book, "It Works," by R. H. Jarrett, could have, as the author states, easily extended over 350 pages.  That is true.  Many similarly-based works in our Free Download Library are hundreds and hundreds of pages in length.

It Works is a basic, bare-b0nes instructional manual of the three-step process to obtaining what you honestly, sincerely Desire - including Success and Prosperity.  In sum, Jarrett reduces the process of visualization and mental idealization, including the seeding of the subconscious mind with the object of Desire, to its most simple essence.  The method outlined in It Works, called "The Plan" by Jarrett, could not be any easier to follow.  And, as proven over the decades, it DOES work!

Any Successful athlete will candidly admit that he or she uses this very process to attain victory and achieve outstanding results.  The most Successful individuals utilize this same mental visualization process to attain the Success that they Desire.  I have personally used this mental process over and over again - sometimes unknowingly - to achieve Goals, obtain Desires and attain Success.  Yes, it does work.

Visualization, or "Image Making," as we have written here before (See Success Key No. 1: Image Making and Success Key No. 2: Image Making: Autosuggestion) is very, very Powerful and is the foundation for setting Goals and achieving Results.  On the road to Success and Prosperity, it is the necessary first step.  Learn it, use it properly and you are well on your way.

If You Know What You Want, You Can Have It

What Is the Real Secret of Obtaining Desireable Possessions?

Are some people born under a lucky star or other charm which enables them to have all that which seems so desirable, and if not, what is the cause of the difference in conditions under which men live?

Many years ago, feeling that there must be a logical answer to this question, I decided to find out, if possible, what it was.  I found the answer to my own satisfaction, and for years, have given the information to others who have used it successfully.

From a scientific, psychological or theological viewpoint, some of the following statements may be interpreted as incorrect, but nevertheless, the plan has brought the results desired to those who have followed the simple instructions, and it is my sincere belief that I am now presenting it in a way which will bring happiness and possessions to many more.
“IF wishes were horses, beggars would ride,” is the attitude taken by the average man and woman in regard to possessions.  They are not aware of a power so near that it is overlooked; so simple in operation that it is difficult to conceive; and so sure in results that it is not made use of consciously, or recognized as the cause of failure or success.

“GEE, I wish that were mine,” is the outburst of Jimmy, the office boy, as a new and red roadster goes by; and Florence, the telephone operator, expresses the same thought regarding a ring in the jeweler’s window; while poor old Jones, the bookkeeper, during the Sunday stroll, replies to his wife, “Yes, dear, it would be nice to have a home like that, but it is out of the question.  We will have to continue to rent.”  Landem, the salesman, protests that he does all the work, gets the short end of the money and will some day quit his job and find a real one, and President Bondum, in his private sanctorum, voices a bitter tirade against the annual attack of hay-fever.

At home it is much the same.  Last evening, father declared that daughter Mabel was headed straight for disaster, and today, mother’s allowance problem and other trying affairs fade into insignificance as she exclaims, “This is the last straw.  Robert’s school teacher wants to see me this afternoon.  His reports are terrible, I know, but I’m late for Bridge now She’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”  So goes the endless stream of expressions like these from millions of people in all classes who give no thought to what they really want, and who are getting all they are entitled to or expect.

If you are one of these millions of thoughtless talkers or wishers and would like a decided change from your present condition, you can have it; but first of all you must know what you want and this is no easy task.  When you can train your objective mind (the mind you use every day) to decide definitely upon the things or conditions you desire, you will have taken your first big step in accomplishing or securing what you know you want.

To get what you want is no more mysterious or uncertain than the radio waves all around you.  Tune in correctly and you get a perfect result, but to do this, it is, of course, necessary to know something of your equipment and have a plan of operation.

You have within you a mighty power, anxious and willing to serve you, a power capable of giving you that which you earnestly desire.  This power is described by Thomas Jay Hudson, Ph.D., LL.D., author of “The Law of Psychic Phenomena,” as your subjective mind.  Other learned writers use different names and terms, but all agree that it is omnipotent.  Therefore, I call this Power “Emmanuel” (God in us).

Regardless of the name of this Great Power, or the conscious admission of a God, the Power is capable and willing to carry to a complete and perfect conclusion every earnest desire of your objective mind, but you must be really earnest about what you want.

Occasional wishing or half-hearted wanting does not form a perfect connection or communication with your omnipotent power.  You must be in earnest, sincerely and truthfully desiring certain conditions or things – mental  physical or spiritual.

Your objective mind and will are so vacillating that you usually only WISH for things and the wonderful, capable power within you does not function.

Most wishes are simply vocal expressions.  Jimmy, the office boy, gave no thought of possessing the red roadster.  Landem, the salesman, was not thinking of any other job or even thinking at all.  President Bondum knew he had hay fever and was expecting it.  Father’s business was quite likely successful, and mother no doubt brought home first prize from the Bridge party that day, but they had no fixed idea of what they really wanted their children to accomplish and were actually helping to bring about the unhappy conditions which existed.

If you are in earnest about changing your present condition, here is a concise, definite, resultful plan, with rules, explanations and suggestions.

The Plan

Write down on paper in order of their importance the things and conditions you really want.  Do not be afraid of wanting too much.  Go the limit in writing down your wants.  Change the list daily, adding to or taking from it, until you have it about right.  Do not be discouraged on account of changes, as this is natural.  There will always be changes and additions with accomplishments and increasing desires.

Three Positive Rules of Accomplishment

1. Read the list of what you want three times each day: morning noon and night.
2. Think of what you want as often as possible.
3. Do not talk to any one about your plan except to the Greater Power within you which will unfold to your Objective Mind the method of accomplishment.

It is obvious that you cannot acquire faith at the start.  Some of your desires, from all practical reasoning, may seem positively unattainable, but, nevertheless, write them down on your list in their proper place of importance to you.

There is no need to analyze how this Power within you is going to accomplish your desires.  Such a procedure is as unnecessary as trying to figure out why a grain of corn packed in fertile soil shoots up to a green stalk, blossoms and produces an ear of corn containing hundreds of grains, each capable of doing what the one grain did.  If you will follow this definite plan and carry out the three simple rules, the method of accomplishment will unfold quite as mysteriously as the ear of corn appears on the stalk, and in most cases much sooner than you expect.

When new desires, deserving position at or about the top of your list, come to you, then you may rest assured you are progressing correctly.

Removing from your list items which at first you thought you wanted, is another sure indication of progress.

It is natural to be skeptical and have doubts, distrust and questionings, but when these thoughts arise, get out your list.  Read it over; or if you have it memorized, talk to your inner self about your desires until the doubts that interfere with your progress are gone.  Remember, nothing can prevent your having that which you earnestly desire.  Others have these things.  Why not you?

The Omnipotent power within you does not enter into any controversial argument.  It is waiting and willing to serve when you are ready, but your objective mind is so susceptible to suggestion that it is almost impossible to make any satisfactory progress when surrounded by skeptics.  Therefore, choose your friends carefully and associate with people who now have some of the things you really want, but do not discuss your method of accomplishment with them.

Put down on your list of wants such material things as money, home, automobile, or whatever it may be, but do not stop there.  Be more definite.  If you want an automobile, decide what kind style, price, color, and all the other details, including when you want it, If you want a home, plan the structure, grounds and furnishings.  Decide on location and cost.  If you want money, write down the amount.  If you want to break a record in your business, put it down.  It may be a sales record.  If so, write out the total, the date required, then the number of items you must sell to make it, also list your prospects and put after each name the sum expected.  This may seem very foolish at first, but you can never realize your desires if you do not know positively and in detail what you want and when you want it.  If you cannot decide this, you are not in earnest.  You must be definite, and when you are, results will be surprising and almost unbelievable.

A natural and ancient enemy will no doubt appear when you get your first taste of accomplishment.  This enemy is Discredit, in form of such thoughts as: “it can’t be possible; it just happened to be.  What a remarkable coincidence!”

When such thoughts occur give thanks and assert credit to your Omnipotent Power for the accomplishment.  By doing this, you gain assurance and more accomplishment, and in time, prove to yourself that there is a law, which actually works – at all times – when you are in tune with it.

Sincere and earnest thanks cannot be given without gratitude and it is impossible to be thankful and grateful without being happy.  Therefore, when you are thanking your greatest and best friend, your Omnipotent Power, for the gifts received, do so with all your soul, and let it be reflected in your face.  The Power and what it does in beyond understanding.  Do not try to understand it, but accept the accomplishment with thankfulness, happiness, and strengthened faith.

Caution

It is possible to want and obtain that which will make you miserable; that which will wreck the happiness of others; that which will cause sickness and death; that which will rob you of eternal life.  You can have what you want, but you must take all that goes with it: so in planning your wants, plan that which you are sure will give to you and your fellow man the greatest good here on earth; thus paving the way to that future hope beyond the pale of human understanding.

This method of securing what you want applies to everything you are capable of desiring and the scope being so great, it is suggested that your first list consists only of those things with which you are quite familiar, such as an amount of money or accomplishment, of the possession of material things.  Such desires are more easily and quickly obtained than the discontinuance of fixed habits, the welfare of others, and the healing of mental or bodily ills.

Accomplish the lesser things first.  Then take the next step, and when that is accomplished, you will seek the higher and really important objectives in life, but long before you reach this stage of your progress, many worthwhile desires will find their place on your list.  One will be to help others as you have been helped.  Great is the reward to those who help and give without thought of self as it is impossible to be unselfish without gain.

In Conclusion

A short while ago, Dr. Emil Coue came to this country and showed thousands of people how to help themselves.  Thousands of others spoofed at the idea, refused his assistance and are today where they were before his visit.

So with the statements and plan presented to you, now you can reject or accept.  You can remain as you are or have anything you want.  The choice is yours, but God grant that you may find in this short volume the inspiration to choose aright, follow the plan and thereby obtain, as so many others have, all things, whatever they may be, that you desire.

Read the entire book over again, and again, AND THEN AGAIN.  Memorize the three simple rules.

Test them now on what you want most this minute.

This book could have extended easily over 350 pages, but it has been deliberately shortened to make it as easy and possible for you to read, understand and use.  Will you try It?  Thousands of bettered lives will testify to the fact that It Works.

Fox became known as one of the most influential New Thought writers of the Twentieth Century.  In his career, he even came to know the prolific New Thought writer and master sage, Judge Thomas Troward (stay tuned, folks, Judge Troward is up next for Download Library).  Fox discovered that he had spiritual healing powers in his teens and never looked back, pursuing the obvious path God had laid before him.

The Hidden Power by Dr. Emmet Fox

Strange as it may seem to you, there exists a mystic power that is able to transform your life so thoroughly, so radically, so completely, that when the process is completed your own friends would hardly recognize you, and, in fact, you would scarcely be able to recognize yourself. You would sit down and ask yourself: "Can I really be the man or woman that I vaguely remember, who went about under my name six months or six years ago? Was I really that person? Could that person have possibly been me?" And the truth will be that while in one sense you are indeed the same person, yet in another sense you will be someone utterly different.

This mystic but intensely real force can pick you up today, now, from the midst of failure, ruin, misery, despair – and in the twinkling of an eye, as Paul said, solve your problems, smooth out your difficulties, cut you free from any entanglements, and place you clear, safe, and happy upon the highroad of freedom and opportunity.

It can lift you out of an invalid’s bed, make you sound and well once more, and free to go out into the world to shape your life as you will. It can throw open the prison door and liberate the captive. It has a magical healing balm for the bruised or broken heart.

This mystic Power can teach you all things that you need to know, if only you are receptive and teachable. It can inspire you with new thoughts and ideas, so that your work may be truly original. It can impart new and wonderful kinds of knowledge as soon as you really want such knowledge – glorious knowledge – strange things not taught in schools or written in books. It can do for you that which is probably the most important thing of all in your present stage: it can find your true place in life for you, and put you into it too. It can find the right friends for you, kindred spirits who are interested in the same ideas and want the same things that you do. It can provide you with an ideal home. It can furnish you with the prosperity that means freedom, freedom to be and to do and to go as your soul calls.

This extraordinary Power, mystic though I have rightly called it, is nevertheless very real, no mere imaginary abstraction, but actually the most practical thing there is. The existence of this Power is already well known to thousands of people in the world today, and has been known to certain enlightened souls for tens of thousands of years. This Power is really no less than the primal Power of Being, and to discover that Power is the Divine birthright of all men. It is your right and your privilege to make your contact with this Power, and to allow it to work through your body, mind, and estate, so that you need no longer grovel upon the ground amid limitations and difficulties, but can soar up on wings like an eagle to the realm of dominion and joy.

But where, it will naturally be asked, is this wonderful, mystic Power to be contacted? Where may we find it? And how is it brought into action? The answer is perfectly simple – This Power is to be found within your own consciousness, the last place that most people would look for it. Right within your own mentality there lies a source of energy stronger than electricity, more potent than high explosive; unlimited and inexhaustible. You only need to make conscious contact with this Power to set it working in your affairs; and all the marvelous results enumerated can be yours. This is the real meaning of such sayings in the Bible as "The Kingdom of God is within you"; and "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and all the rest shall be added."

This Indwelling Power, the Inner Light, or Spiritual Idea, is spoken of in the Bible as a child, and throughout the Scriptures the child symbolically always stands for this. Bible symbolism has its own beautiful logic, and just as the soul is always spoken of as a woman, so this, the Spiritual Idea that is born to the soul, is described as a child.

The conscious discovery by you that you have this Power within you, and your determination to make use of it, is the birth of the child. And it is easy to see how very apt the symbol is, for the infant that is born in consciousness is just such a weak, feeble entity as any new-born child, and it calls for the same careful nursing and guarding that any infant does in its earliest days. After a time, however, as the weeks go by, the child grows stronger and bigger, until a time comes when it can well take care of itself; and then it grows and grows in wisdom and stature until, no longer leaning on the mother’s care, the child, now arrived at man’s estate, turns the tables, and repays its debt by taking over the care of its mother. So your ability to contact the mystic Power within yourself, frail and feeble at first, will gradually develop until you find yourself permitting that Power to take your whole life into its care.

The life story of Jesus, the central figure of the Bible, perfectly dramatizes this truth. He is described as being born of a virgin, and in a poor stable, and we know how he grew up to be the Savior of the world. Now, in Bible symbolism, the virgin soul means the soul that looks to God alone, and it is this condition of soul in which the child, or Spiritual Idea, comes to birth. It is when we have reached that stage, the stage where, either through wisdom or because of suffering, we are prepared to put God really first, that the thing happens.

Open up your mind.  Clear out the channels of thought.  Keep yourself in a state of receptivity.  Gain a mental attitude in which you are constantly expecting good.  Don’t let one Success – no matter how great – satisfy you.  You cannot stand still.  You must go forward – or be passed by.  Complacency – self satisfaction – is the greatest enemy of achievement.  You must keep looking forward.

Success Passage: "The Formula of Success" from "The Secret of the Ages" by Robert Collier

One of my personal favorite Success Manual classics is "The Secret of the Ages" by Robert Collier.  In fact, I have three copies of the longer, second version - the one with 34 chapters (one copy is filled with my notes, the second copy is used but I picked it up for a couple of dollars, and the third is brand new for safe keeping :-D).   We like it so much here, that we have included the original 1937 version of The Secret of the Ages in Volume One of the Five-Volume Set of our Law of Attraction Prosperity Bible EBook (more than 4,000 pages!).

There are many reasons why I enjoy this particular book (in addition to the outstanding content, of course).  First, Collier's style is that of a personal conversation.  When reading this work, it is though he is sitting with you, explaining his understanding of the great laws of Success.

Second - and some may actually find this a shortcoming  - is the book's unique and subtle "repetiveness" while not becoming boring or distracting.

Studying the Laws and Principles of Success requires repetition.  If we could truly read things once, grasp the full and intended meaning of the written word, and immediately apply that meaning into our lives - without failure, misinterpretation and with full meaning and understanding - that would be one thing.  But, that is virtually impossible.  Afterall, we are human!  Years - in fact, decades - of habit and conditioning (in thought, emotion and behavior) are not readily changed.  In fact, improving ourselves and our circumstances is a life-long journey!

As a result, we need to hear - what we need to hear - again and again and again, and we need to read and study - what we need to read and study - again and again and again, IF we are truly committed to improving ourselves (the cause) in order to achieve Success and attain Prosperity (the effect).

One cannot manifest the effect without initiating the proper cause.  Initiating the proper cause requires inner work.  That work requires repetition.

That all being said, I thought I would share with you Chapter 9 from The Secret of the Ages, entitled "The Formula of Success" by Robert Collier.  It is truly great stuff - read it, study it, learn it, apply it.  Then, do it again.  And, again.  And, again.

What is the eternal question which stands up and looks you and every sincere man squarely in the eye every morning?

“How can I better my condition?”  That is the real life question which confronts you, and will haunt you every day till you solve it.

Read this chapter carefully and I think you will find the answer to this important life question which you and every man must solve if he expects ever to have more each Monday morning, after pay day, than he had the week before.

To begin with, all wealth depends upon a clear understanding of the fact that mind – thought – is the only creator.  The great business of life is thinking.  Control your thoughts and you control circumstance.

Just as the first law of gain is desire, so the formula of success is BELIEF.  Believe that you have it – see it as an existent fact – and anything you can rightly wish for is yours.  Belief is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

You have seen men, inwardly no more capable than yourself, accomplish the seemingly impossible.  You have seen others, after years of hopeless struggle, suddenly win their most cherished dreams.  And, you’ve often wondered, “What is the power that gives new life to their dying ambitions, that supplies new impetus to their jaded desires, that gives them a new Start on the road to success?”

That power is belief – faith.  Someone, something, gave them a new belief in themselves and a new faith in their power to win – and they leaped ahead and wrested success from seemingly certain defeat.

Do you remember the picture Harold Lloyd was in two or three years ago, showing a country boy who was afraid of his shadow?  Every boy in the countryside bedeviled him.  Until one day his grandmother gave him a talisman that she assured him his grandfather had carried through the Civil War and which, so she said, had the property of making its owner invincible.  Nothing could hurt him, she told him, while he wore this talisman.  Nothing could stand up against him.  He believed her.  And the next time the bully of the town started to cuff him around, he wiped up the earth with him.  And that was only the start.  Before the year was out he had made a reputation as the most daring soul in the community.

Then, when his grandmother felt that he was thoroughly cured, she told him the truth – that the “talisman” was merely a piece of old junk she picked up by the roadside – that she knew all he needed was faith in himself, belief that he could do these things.

Stories like that are common.  It is such a well-established truth that you can do only what you think you can, that the theme is a favorite one with authors.  I remember reading a story years ago of an artist – a mediocre sort of artist – who was visiting the field of Waterloo and happened upon a curious lump of metal half buried in the dirt, which so attracted him that he picked it up and put it in his pocket.  Soon thereafter he noticed a sudden increase in confidence, an absolute faith in himself, not only as to his own Chosen line of work, but in his ability to handle any situation that might present itself.  He painted a great picture – just to show that he could do it.  Not content with that, he visioned an empire with Mexico as its basis, actually led a revolt that carried all before it – until one day he lost his talisman.  And immediately his bubble burst.

I instance this just to illustrate the point that it is your own belief in yourself that counts.  It is the consciousness of dominant power within you that makes all things attainable.  You can do anything you think you can.  This knowledge is literally the gift of the gods, for through it you can solve every human problem.  It should make of you an incurable optimist.  It is the open door to welfare.  Keep it open – by expecting to gain everything that is right.

You are entitled to every good thing.  Therefore expect nothing but good.  Defeat does not need to follow victory.  You don’t have to “knock wood” every time you congratulate yourself that things have been going well with you.  Victory should follow victory – and it will if you “let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”  It is the mind that means health and life and boundless opportunity and recompense.  No limitation rests upon you.  So don’t let any enter your life.  Remember that Mind will do every good thing for you.  It will remove mountains for you.

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

Bring all your thoughts, your desires, your aims, your talents, into the Storehouse – the Consciousness of Good, the Law of Infinite supply – and prove these blessings.  There is every reason to know that you are entitled to adequate provision.  Everything that is involved in supply is a thing of thought.  Now reach out, stretch your mind, try to comprehend unlimited thought, unlimited supply.

Do not think that supply must come through one or two channels.  It is not for you to dictate to Universal Mind the means through which It shall send Its gifts to you.  There are millions of channels through which It can reach you.  Your part is to impress upon Mind your need, your earnest desire, your boundless belief in the resources and the willingness of Universal Mind to help you.  Plant the seed of desire.  Nourish it with a clear visualization of the ripened fruit.  Water it with sincere faith.  But leave the means to Universal Mind.

Open up your mind.  Clear out the channels of thought.  Keep yourself in a state of receptivity.  Gain a mental attitude in which you are constantly expecting good.  You have the fundamental right to all good, you know.  “According to your faith, be it unto you.”

The trouble with most of us is that we are mentally lazy.  It is so much easier to go along with the crowd than to break trail for ourselves.  But the great discoverers, the great inventors, the great geniuses in all lines have been men who dared to break with tradition, who defied precedent, who believed that there is no limit to what Mind can do – and who stuck to that belief until their goal was won, in spite of all the sneers and ridicule of the wiseacres and the “It-can’t-be-done’rs.”

Not only that, but they were never satisfied with achieving just one success.  They knew that the first success is like the first olive out of the bottle.  All the others come out the more easily for it.  They realized that they were a part of the Creative Intelligence of the Universe, and that the part shares all the properties of the whole.  And that realization gave them the faith to strive for any right thing, the knowledge that the only limit upon their capabilities was the limit of their desires.  Knowing that, they couldn’t be satisfied with any ordinary success.  They had to keep on and on and on.

Edison didn’t sit down and fold his hands when he gave us the talking machine.  Or the electric light.  These great achievements merely opened the way to new fields of accomplishment.

Open up the channels between your mind and Universal Mind, and there is no limit to the riches that will come pouring in.  Concentrate your thoughts on the particular thing you are most interested in, and ideas in abundance will come flooding down, opening up a dozen ways of winning the goal you are striving for.

But don’t let one success – no matter how great – satisfy you.  The Law of Creation, you know, is the Law of Growth.  You can’t stand still.  You must go forward – or be passed by.  Complacency – self satisfaction – is the greatest enemy of achievement.  You must keep looking forward.  Like Alexander, you must be constantly seeking new worlds to conquer.  Depend upon it, the power will come to meet the need.  There is no such thing as failing powers, if we look to Mind for our source of supply.  The only failure of mind comes from worry and fear – or from disuse.

William James, the famous psychologist, taught that “The more mind does, the more it can do.”  For ideas release energy.  You can do more and better work than you have ever done.  You can know more than you know now.  You know from your own experience that under proper mental conditions of joy or enthusiasm, you can do three or four times the work without fatigue that you can ordinarily.  Tiredness is more boredom than actual physical fatigue.  You can work almost indefinitely when the work is a pleasure.

You’ve seen sickly persons, frail persons, who couldn’t do an hour’s light work without exhaustion, suddenly buckle down when heavy responsibilities were thrown upon them, and grow strong and rugged under the load.  Crises not only draw upon the reserve power you have, but they help to create new power.

“It Couldn’t Be Done”

It may be that you have been deluded by the thought of incompetence.  It may be that you have been told so often that you cannot do certain things that you’ve come to believe you can’t.  Remember that success or failure is merely a state of mind.  Believe you cannot do a thing – and you can’t.  Know that you can do it – and you will.  You must see yourself doing it.

“If you think you are beaten, you are;

If you think you dare not, you don’t;

If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t,

It’s almost a cinch you won’t;

If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost,

For out in the world you’ll find

Success begins with a fellow’s will –

It’s all in the state of mind.

 

“Full many a race is lost

Ere even a race is run,

And many a coward fails

Ere even his work’s begun.

Think big, and your deeds will grow,

Think small and you fall behind,

Think that you can, and you will;

It’s all in the state of mind.

 

“If you think you are outclassed, you are;

You’ve got to think high to rise;

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before

You can ever win a prize.

Life’s battle doesn’t always go

To the stronger or faster man;

But sooner or later, the man who wins

Is the fellow who thinks he can.”

There’s a vast difference between a proper understanding of one’s own ability and a determination to make the best of it – and offensive egotism.  It is absolutely necessary for every man to believe in himself, before he can make the most of himself.  All of us have something to sell.  It may be our goods, it may be our abilities, it may be our services.  You’ve got to believe in yourself to make your buyer take stock in you at par and accrued interest.  You’ve got to feel the same personal solicitude over a customer lost, as a revivalist over a backslider, and hold special services to bring him back into the fold.  You’ve got to get up every morning with determination, if you’re going to go to bed that night with satisfaction.

There’s mighty sound sense in the saying that all the world loves a booster.  The one and only thing you have to win success with is MIND.  For your mind to function at its highest capacity, you’ve got to be charged with good cheer and optimism.  No one ever did a good piece of work while in a negative frame of mind.  Your best work is always done when you are feeling happy and optimistic.

And a happy disposition is the result – not the cause – of happy, cheery thinking.  Health and prosperity are the results primarily of optimistic thoughts.  You make the pattern.  If the impress you have left on the world about you seems faint and weak, don’t blame fate – blame your pattern!  You will never cultivate a brave, courageous demeanor by thinking cowardly thoughts.  You cannot gather figs from thistles.  You will never make your dreams come true by choking them with doubts and fears.  You’ve got to put foundations under your air castles, foundations of UNDERSTANDING and BELIEF.  Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your BELIEF in yourself.

Are your surroundings discouraging?  Do you feel that if you were in place success would be easier?  Just bear in mind that your real environment is within you.  All the factors of success or failure are in your inner world.  You make that own inner world – and through it your outer world.  You can choose the material from which to build it.  If you’ve not Chosen wisely in the past, you can choose again now the material you want to rebuild it.  The richness of life is within you.  No one has failed so long as he can begin again.

Start right in and do all those things you feel you have it in you to do.  Ask permission of no man.  Concentrating your thought upon any proper undertaking will make its achievement possible.  Your belief that you can do the thing gives your thought forces their power.  Fortune waits upon you.  Seize her boldly, hold her – and she is yours.  She belongs rightfully to you.  But if you cringe to her, if you go up to her doubtfully, timidly, she will pass you by in scorn.  For she is a fickle jade who must be mastered, who loves boldness, who admires confidence.

A Roman boasted that it was sufficient for him to strike the ground with his foot and legions would spring up.  And his very boldness cowed his opponents.  It is the same with your mind.  Take the first step, and your mind will mobilize all its forces to your aid.  But the first essential is that you begin.  Once the battle is started, all that is within and without you will come to your assistance, if you attack in earnest and meet each obstacle with resolution.  But you have got to start things.

“The Lord helps them that help themselves” is a truth as old as man.  It is, in fact, plain common sense.  Your subconscious mind has all power, but your conscious mind is the watchman at the gate.  It has got to open the door.  It has got to press the spring that releases the infinite energy.  No failure is possible in the accomplishment of any right object you may have in life, if you but understand your power and will perseveringly try to use it in the proper way.

The men who have made their mark in this world all had one trait in common – they believed in themselves!  “But,” you may say, “how can I believe in myself when I have never yet done anything worth while, when everything I put my hand to seems to fail?”  You can’t, of course.  That is, you couldn’t if you had to depend upon your conscious mind alone.  But just remember what one far greater than you said – “I can of mine own self do nothing.  The Father that is within me – He doeth the works.”

That same “Father” is within you.  And it is by knowing that He is in you, and that through Him you can do anything that is right, that you can acquire that belief in yourself which is so necessary.  Certainly the Mind that imaged the heavens and the earth and all that they contain has all wisdom, all power, all abundance.  With this Mind to call upon, you know there is no problem too difficult for you to undertake.  The knowing of this is the first step.  Faith.  But St. James tells us – “Faith without works is dead.”  So go on to the next step.  Decide on the one thing you want most from life.  No matter what it may be.  There is no limit, you know, to Mind.  Visualize this thing that you want.  See it, feel it, BELIEVE in it.  Make your mental blueprint, and begin to build!

Suppose some people DO laugh at your idea.  Suppose Reason does say – “It can’t be done!”  People laughed at Galileo.  They laughed at Henry Ford.  Reason contended for countless ages that the earth was flat.  Reason said – or so numerous automotive engineers argued – that the Ford motor wouldn’t run.  But the earth is round – and the twelfth or fifteenth million Ford is on the road.

Let us start right now putting into practice some of these truths that you have learned.  What do you want most of life right now?  Take that one desire, concentrate on it, impress it upon your subconscious mind.

Psychologists have discovered that the best time to make suggestions to your subconscious mind is just before going to sleep, when the senses are quiet and the attention is lax.  So let us take your desire and suggest it to your subconscious mind tonight.  The two prerequisites are the earnest DESIRE, and an intelligent, understanding BELIEF.  Someone has said, you know, that education is three-fourths encouragement, and the encouragement is the suggestion that the thing can be done.

You know that you can have what you want, if you want it badly enough and can believe in it earnestly enough.  So tonight, just before you drop off to sleep, concentrate your thought on this thing that you most desire from life.  BELIEVE that you have it.  SEE YOURSELF possessing it.  FEEL yourself using it.

Do that every night until you ACTUALLY DO BELIEVE that you have the thing you want.  When you reach that point, YOU WILL HAVE IT!

"He ain't heavy, he's my brother."

Chances are, you have heard that phrase before and may even know that it is the title of a song that was popular in 1969 and 1970.  Let's digress a bit.

According to Wikipedia, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" was a popular music ballad written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. The earliest recording of the song was made by Neil Diamond for his 1970 album, Tap Root Manuscript. The 60's and 70's pop group, The Hollies, however, released their version in September 1969, about a year before Diamond's version was released as a single.

Interestingly, The Hollies' recording featured a young, but relatively unknown gentleman by the name of Elton John on piano.

But, from where did Bobby Scott and Bob Russell arrive at the title and idea for the song? Let's take a brief walk back into time (all according to Wikipedia, of course - I don't know this stuff personally).

The first editor of Kiwanis Magazine, Roe Fulkerson, published a column in September 1924 carrying the title "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." 

However, the phrase - or one quite similar to it - is probably best known as being associated with Father Edward J. Flanagan, the founder of Boys Town.

Flanagan came across a line drawing of a young boy carrying his brother in the Christmas 1941 edition of the Louis Allis Messenger. The caption read "He ain't heavy Mister — he's m' brother!" It was created by Mr. Van B. Hooper who later became the editor of Ideals magazine. The drawing was reprinted in the first issue of Ideals in December 1944. Father Flanagan felt that the drawing illustrated the work done at Boys Town and received permission from the company in August 1943 to recreate the drawing in color with the caption "He ain't heavy, Father . . . he's m' brother."  The phrase became the motto of Boys Town.

However, the phrase has roots even further back than that.

In an 1918 publication by Ralph Waldo Trine titled "The Higher Powers of Mind and Spirit," he relates the following anecdote:  Do you know that incident in connection with the little Scottish girl? She was trudging along, carrying as best she could a boy younger, but it seemed almost as big as she herself, when one remarked to her how heavy he must be for her to carry, when instantly came the reply: "He's na heavy. He's mi brither."

And, there you go.

In Open Your Mind to Receive, Ponder, founder of the Unity Church, articulates effective prayer and how our Great Creator works within us to manifest the object (not necessarily a "physical" object) of our Desire.  Indeed, Ponder's brilliant and well-written discourse may be summarized as follows:

1.  The word “receive” means “to accept.”  Psychologists tell us we can have anything we can mentally accept, but we must be able to mentally accept it first.

2.  Most of us have heard a lot about giving but not enough about receiving.  Many people have a hang-up about receiving.

3.  Giving is only one-half of the law.  Receiving is the other half.  Many people unbalance the law by over-giving.  Many people unbalance the law by not expecting to receive.

4.  It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom and it should be your good pleasure to receive it.

5.  What you notice and talk about, you are inviting into your life.  What you identify with in your thoughts, words, and actions, you are inviting into your life.

6.  Open your mind to receive by identifying with the good.

7.  Open your mind to receive by telling God what you want, instead of telling people.  Telling people what you want can dissipate your good.  People are channels, but God is the source.

8.  When you want to receive, give.  There are three kinds of giving.  All are necessary:

• Give to God.  Put Him first financially.  This is the first quality to be developed on the road to Enlightenment.
• Give to yourself.  Self-improvement is necessary before you can help others improve.
• Give something to someone else.

9.   Get ready to receive.  Prepare to receive.

10.  Next, daily speak the word of receiving.  This gains the cooperation of your thought and feeling nature which then begins to work for you.

Finally, declare that you have received, and then release it.  This causes your accumulated good to move from the invisible plane and to become visible results.
