Now, for the exciting conclusion to The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons by Napoleon Hill, I am pleased to present you with the final installment - Lesson Sixteen: The Golden Rule.  What a great addition to The Napoleon Hill Success Library!

And a good lesson it is.  I can certainly use some of this timeless Wisdom - again, and again, and again.  Moreover, Lesson 16 brings together all of the great material from the prior fifteen lessons - The Golden Rule is the glue that binds the other lessons into a cohesive, working fabric.

We have spent some significant time at this site discussing the Golden Rule and have compiled some noteworthy posts on the subject.

Earlier this year, we did Success Key: The Law of Compensation, Part 1, on February 8, 2011, and received great feedback on that post.

And, back on March 10, 2010, who could forget Success Key: The Golden Rule - A Lost Success Key? 

The bottom line is that The Golden Rule is paramount to achieving Success.  Whether we call it the Law of Compensation, Law of Cause and Effect, karma or any number of other terms, how we think about and act towards others will come back to us in kind.  If not now, then later.  But, it will come back.

Here are a few great quotes from Lesson 16 by Professor Hill to get you on your way:

• There is an eternal law through the operation of which we reap that which we sow.  When you select the rule of conduct by which you guide yourself in your transactions with others, you will be fair and just, very likely, if you know that you are setting into motion, by that selection, a power that will run its course for weal or woe in the lives of others, returning, finally, to help or to hinder you, according to its nature.
• It may be an old-fashioned idea, but somehow I can’t get away from the belief that no man can attain success in its highest form without the aid of earnest prayer!
• The Golden Rule philosophy is based upon a law which no man can circumvent.  This law is the same law that is described in Lesson Eleven, on Accurate Thought, through the operation of which one’s thoughts are transformed into reality corresponding exactly to the nature of the thoughts.
• Those who understand and apply the Golden Rule philosophy are always scrupulously honest, not alone out of their desire to be just with others, but because: of their desire to be just with themselves.  They understand the eternal law upon which the Golden Rule is based, and they know that through the operation of this law every thought they release and every act in which they indulge has its counterpart in some fact or circumstance with which they will later be confronted.

• You have noticed frequent reference to Emerson throughout this course.  Every student of the course should own a copy of Emerson’s Essays, and the essay on Compensation should be read and studied at least every three months.  Observe, as you read this essay, that it deals with the same law as that upon which the Golden Rule is based.
• Remember that your reputation is made by others, but your character is made by you!
• Throughout this entire course one particular principle has been emphasized for the purpose of illustrating the truth that every personality is the sum total of the individual’s thoughts and acts – that we come to resemble the nature of our dominating thoughts.
• No one knows the limitations of the power of thought, or whether or not it has any limitations.  Whatever man believes he can do he eventually does.

And, in Lesson 16, Professor Hill also leaves us with his "Code of Ethics," which, in all its simplicity, is worth noting:

My Code of Ethics

1. I believe in the Golden Rule as the basis of all human conduct; therefore, I will never do to another person that which I would not be willing for that person to do to me if our positions were reversed.
2. I will be honest, even to the slightest detail, in all my transactions with others, not alone because of my desire to be fair with them, but because of my desire to impress the idea of honesty on my own subconscious mind, thereby weaving this essential quality into my own character.
3. I will forgive those who are unjust toward me, with no thought as to whether they deserve it or not, because I understand the law through which forgiveness of others strengthens my own character and wipes out the effects of my own transgressions, in my subconscious mind.
4. I will be just, generous and fair with others always, even though I know that these acts will go unnoticed and unrecorded, in the ordinary terms of reward, because I understand and intend to apply the law through the aid of which one’s own character is but the sum total of one’s own acts and deeds.
5. Whatever time I may have to devote to the discovery and exposure of the weaknesses and faults of others I will devote, more profitably, to the discovery and correction of my own.
6. I will slander no person, no matter how much I may believe another person may deserve it, because I wish to plant no destructive suggestions in my own subconscious mind.
7. I recognize the power of Thought as being an inlet leading into my brain from the universal ocean of life; therefore, I will set no destructive thoughts afloat upon that ocean lest they pollute the minds of others.
8. I will conquer the common human tendency toward hatred, and envy, and selfishness, and jealousy, and malice, and pessimism, and doubt, and fear; for I believe these to be the seed from which the world harvests most of its troubles.
9. When my mind is not occupied with thoughts that tend toward the attainment of my definite chief aim in life, I will voluntarily keep it filled with thoughts of courage, and self-confidence, and goodwill toward others, and faith, and kindness, and loyalty, and love for truth, and justice, for I believe these to be the seed from which the world reaps its harvest of progressive growth.
10. I understand that a mere passive belief in the soundness of the Golden Rule philosophy is of no value whatsoever, either to myself or to others; therefore, I will actively put into operation this universal rule for good in all my transactions with others.
11. I understand the law through the operation of which my own character is developed from my own acts and thoughts; therefore, I will guard with care all that goes into its development.
12. Realizing that enduring happiness comes only through helping others find it; that no act of kindness is without its reward, even though it may never be directly repaid, I will do my best to assist others when and where the opportunity appears.

Even Professor Napoleon Hill admits the importance of Lesson Eleven in the opening pages of this Success Manual Classic:

This is at one and the same time the most important, the most interesting and the most difficult to present lesson of this entire course on the Law of Success.  It is important because it deals with a principle which runs through the entire course.  It is interesting for the same reason.  It is difficult to present for the reason that it will carry the average student far beyond the boundary line of his common experiences and into a realm of thought in which he is not accustomed to dwell.

Very well – let those who are satisfied with this standard of success have it; but some there are who will want to go higher up the ladder, in search of success which is measured in other than material standards, and it is for their benefit in particular that this and the subsequent lessons of this course are intended.

“I do not believe that I can afford to deceive others – I know I cannot afford to deceive myself!”  This must be the motto of the accurate thinker.

All thought is creative!  However, not all thought is constructive or positive.  If you think thoughts of misery and poverty and see no way to avoid these conditions, then your thoughts will create those very conditions and curse you with them.  But reverse the order, and think thoughts of a positive, expectant nature and your thoughts will create those conditions.

Thought magnetizes your entire personality and attracts to you the outward, physical things that harmonize with the nature of your thoughts.  This has been made clear in practically every lesson preceding this one, yet it is repeated here, and will be repeated many times more in the lessons that follow.  The reason for this constant repetition is that nearly all beginners in the study of mind operation overlook the importance of this fundamental and eternal truth.

The power to THINK as you wish to THINK is the only power over which you have absolute control.

Lesson Eleven, like many of the other Lessons comprising the multi-volume Law of Success series by Napoleon Hill, contains an "After-the-Lesson Visit with the Author."  The discussion in Lesson Eleven is "Failure." 

And a great discussion it is.

Here are a few select quotes on the topic of Failure, taken from Lesson Eleven:

FAILURE is generally accepted as a curse.  But few people ever understand that failure is a curse only when it is accepted as such.  But few ever learn the truth that FAILURE is seldom permanent.  Failure teaches men lessons which they would never learn without it.  Moreover, it teaches in a language that is universal.  Among the great lessons taught by failure is that of HUMILITY.

Most people who believe themselves to be failures are not failures at all.  Most conditions which people look upon as failure are nothing more than temporary defeat.  Do not use the word FAILURE carelessly.  Remember, carrying a burdensome cross temporarily is not FAILURE.  If you have the real seed of success within you, a little adversity and temporary defeat will only serve to nurture that seed and cause it to burst forth into maturity.

When Divine Intelligence wants a great man or woman to render some needed service in the world, the fortunate one is tested out through some form of FAILURE.  If you are undergoing what you believe to be failure, have patience; you may be passing through your testing time.

No capable executive would select, as his lieutenants, those whom he had not tested for reliability, loyalty, perseverance and other essential qualities.

Responsibility, and all that goes with it in the way of remuneration, always gravitates to the person who will not accept temporary defeat as permanent failure.

Burn your bridges behind you and observe how well you work when you KNOW THAT YOU HAVE NO RETREAT.

A street car conductor got a leave of absence while he tried out a position in a great mercantile business.  “If I do not succeed in holding my new position,” he remarked to a friend, “I can always come back to the old job.”

At the end of the month he was back, completely cured of all ambition to do anything except work on a street car.  Had he resigned instead of asking for a leave of absence he might have made good in the new job.

Study the roadway of life, in the picture at the beginning of this essay, and observe that everyone who travels that road carries a cross.  Remember, as you take inventory of your own burdens, that Nature’s richest gifts go to those who meet FAILURE without flinching or whining.

Nature’s ways are not easily understood.  If they were, no one could be tested for great responsibility, with FAILURE!

There is no FAILURE.  That which looks to be failure is usually nothing but temporary defeat.  Make sure that you do not accept it as PERMANENT!

The entire topic of Enthusiasm is particularly appropriate now.  We have completed one calendar year and have begun a new one.  Many have taken to outlining and defining their Goals for 2011.  Others have engaged in the timeless excercise of making "Resolutions."  Either way, hitting the ground running - with ENTHUSIASM - is the most powerful method of implementing your Quality Changes for this year.

Consider the following exerpts from Lesson Seven:

Enthusiasm is a state of mind that inspires and arouses one to put action into the task at hand.  It does more than this – it is contagious, and vitally affects not only the enthusiast, but all with whom he comes in contact.

Enthusiasm bears the same relationship to a human being that steam does to the locomotive – it is the vital moving force that impels action.  The greatest leaders of men are those who know how to inspire enthusiasm in their followers.  Enthusiasm is the most important factor entering into salesmanship.  It is, by far, the most vital factor that enters into public speaking.

Mix enthusiasm with your work and it will not seem hard or monotonous.  Enthusiasm will so energize your entire body that you can get along with less than half the usual amount of sleep and at the same time it will enable you to perform from two to three times as much work as you usually perform in a given period, without fatigue.

Enthusiasm is not merely a figure of speech; it is a vital force that you can harness and use with profit.  Without it you would resemble an electric battery without electricity.

Enthusiasm is the vital force with which you recharge your body and develop a dynamic personality.  Some people are blessed with natural enthusiasm, while others must acquire it.  The procedure through which it may be developed is simple.  It begins by the doing of the work or rendering of the service which one likes best.  If you should be so situated that you cannot conveniently engage in the work which you like best, for the time being, then you can proceed along another line very effectively by adopting a definite chief aim that contemplates your engaging in that particular work at some future time.

Lack of capital and many other circumstances over which you have no immediate control may force you to engage in work which you do not like, but no one can stop you from determining in your own mind what your definite chief aim in life shall be, nor can anyone stop you from planning ways and means for translating this aim into reality, nor can anyone stop you from mixing enthusiasm with your plans.

When your own mind is vibrating at a high rate, because it has been stimulated with enthusiasm, that vibration registers in the minds of all within its radius, and especially in the minds of those with whom you come in close contact.

Now that the holiday break is over, it's time to gear up, step up and move up.  Enthusiasm is the order of the day!

As a quick refresher, Lesson One of The Law of Success Course was on the subject of Master Mind.  In Lesson Two of The Law of Success, Professor Hill addressed the objective of A Definite Chief Aim.  Today, Lesson Three covers the subjects of Fear and Self-Confidence.

Fear kills ambition and snuffs our attempts to Succeed and achieve our Goals.  Fear stops our progress dead in its tracks.  In fact, the greatest Success Teachers and Masters cite Fear more than any other reason why we fail to attain Success, change our lives and reach our Goals.

Fear may be overt and obvious, or it may be subtle and insidious.  Either way, Fear must be defeated.

The greatest weapon for overtaking Fear and removing it from your path is Self-Confidence.  We are in luck, for Napoleon Hill is a great teacher on the subject of Self-Confidence.

Today's addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library - and also to The Napoleon Hill Free Success Library - comes a little early, as I planned to upload each Lesson on a weekly basis.  However, more goodies are planned, so we bumped Lesson Three up several days.  I trust you will not mind!

Okay, Success Students, it is on to Lesson Two in "The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons" by the fabulous Napoleon Hill.  Last week's introductory Lesson One: The Master Mind is available for download and if you did not grab your own personal copy of this "must have" Success Manual, you better do so now.  Class is in session and homework is not an option.

I really enjoyed reading Lesson Two over the past couple of days as I compiled and edited the volume for The Success Manual Free Download Library.  Clearly, The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons - which was published approximately nine years before Mr. Hill's smash classic, "Think and Grow Rich," laid the ground work for the later work. Yet, the earlier material provides greater detail and explanation not found in the more popular Think and Grow Rich.  There is some obvious overlap, but I was not aware of the richness of Mr. Hill's earlier project.

Consider the following quotes from Lesson Two:

The object of this lesson is not to inform you as to what your lifework should be, for indeed this could be done with accuracy only after you had been completely analyzed, but it is intended as a means of impressing upon your mind a clear conception of the value of a definite purpose of some nature, and of the value of understanding the principle of organized effort as a means of attaining the necessary power with which to materialize your definite purpose.

Stating this principle from another angle: You choose, for example, a definite purpose as your lifework and make up your mind that you will carry out that purpose.  From the very moment that you make this choice, this purpose becomes the dominating thought in your consciousness, and you are constantly on the alert for facts, information and knowledge with which to achieve that purpose.  From the time that you plant a definite purpose in your mind, your mind begins, both consciously and unconsciously, to gather and store away the material with which you are to accomplish that purpose.

It is most appalling to know that ninety-five per cent of the people of the world are drifting aimlessly through life, without the slightest conception of the work for which they are best fitted, and with no conception whatsoever of even the need of such a thing as a definite objective toward which to strive.

[To most individuals, when asked their purpose in life, the response is]: “My definite purpose in life is to be of as much service to the world as possible and earn a good living.”  That answer is about as definite as a frog’s conception of the size of the universe is accurate!

If success depends upon power, and if power is organized effort, and if the first step in the direction of organization is a definite purpose, then one may easily see why such a purpose is essential.

Whatever you want you may get if you want it with sufficient intensity, and keep on wanting it, providing the object wanted is one within reason, and you ACTUALLY BELIEVE YOU WILL GET IT!  There is a difference, however, between merely “wishing” for something and ACTUALLY BELIEVING you will get it.  Lack of understanding of this difference has meant failure to millions of people.  The “doers” are the “believers” in all walks of life.  Those who BELIEVE they can achieve the object of their definite chief aim do not recognize the word impossible.  Neither do they acknowledge temporary defeat.  They KNOW they are going to succeed, and if one plan fails they quickly replace it with another plan.

We start with Lesson One: The Master Mind to "The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons."  This voluminous work is a library in itself; creating a single ebook of all sixteen lessons is just too much of an undertaking of a manageable ebook.  So, as common sense would dictate, we have split this Success Manual into sixteen separate volumes.

Lesson One, the introductory lesson requisite for the fifteen lessons to follow, introduces and defines terminology and sets the stage by teaching the fundamentals of "the Master Mind."  Pay close attention as you study this great work.

This is not hocus-pocus.  Anytime you Succeeded at any level in the past, it always initiated with the Belief that you could, and would, Succeed.  Otherwise, you would not even have tried.

The stronger your Belief, the greater your level of Success.  "The size of your Success will be in direct proportion to the size of your Belief."

As soon as you truly Believe in yourself, your Purpose and your Goal, you are immediately Empowered to Achieve.  Despite the title of Mr. Bristol's book, there is nothing magical about Belief.  It is Power in itself.

Recently, we added "The Law and the Word" by Thomas Troward to The Success Manual Free Download Library.  Judge Troward, a brilliant writer and perhaps "the Godfather of New Thought," is not easy reading by any means (at least not for me).  As a result, despite his legacy with regard to the New Thought movement and the impact of his teachings on modern day Success Masters (e.g., Bob Proctor, Anthony Robbins, etc.), we have been a little hesitant to bring his works into our online fold. 

Were we wrong. Hundreds of copies of The Law and the Word have already been downloaded. 

Which brings us to today's addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library: "The Creative Process in the Individual" by Thomas Troward.  Out of all of his works, I personally find Creative Process easier to assimilate and of immediate practical value.  Yes, it has its esoteric qualities as do all of Troward's work; but, it does provide an understandable dissertation on exactly what the title of the work states: The Creative Process in the Individual.

As we noted in our previous post on Troward's work, a primary focus of  Creative Process is, as Troward expressly states, "The triumph of principle over precedent, the working out of an Idea to its logical conclusions in spite of the accumulated testimony of all past exerpience to the contrary."  In other words, even though the Law of Cause and Effect (the "Law of Laws" according to Emerson) is in full force and effect, we need to be mindful that what happened yesterday has absolutely no bearing on what we do today, unless we allow it.  Each day is a fresh start.  Yesterday's "failures" belong to yesterday. 

The human race has been able to advance as a result of the Triumph of Principle Over Precedent.  Each day brings new Opportunity for Growth - and Grow we do (to the extent we allow ourselves).  And, Growth of any kind ultimately brings Success and purifes the Soul. 

A Cautionary Note: The Creative Process in the Individual, like all Success Manuals - but particularly so here - is NOT a book that one simply picks up, reads and puts back on the book shelf to collect dust.  It IS a Success Manual, to be read and studied with purpose and intent.  The conveyed words of Wisdom are to be savored, absorbed into our consciousness and analyzed.  To approach this  work any other way is a waste of time and energy. 

Lastly, please keep in mind my prior explanation on the "ether" as you read this book to avoid any confusion. 

Now, roll up your sleeves and get to work!

The other evening, I grabbed my oldest hardcopy version of The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, as I found myself strongly attracted to the book (a common occurrence between books and me).  I have read this book many times, but have not reviewed any of this great material in years.  When significant time has passed since I have last reviewed a particular work, I often just open it randomly, and usually where I land is spot on to what I really need to read for a particular challenge that I am facing.

And so it was with Chapter 8, "How to Get the Results You Want."

Today's Success Manual Success Passage is exactly that: "How to Get the Results You Want."

How to Get What You Want

by Joseph Murphy

The principle reasons for failure are: Lack of confidence and too much effort.  Many people block answers to their prayers by failing to fully comprehend the workings of their subconscious mind.  When you know how your mind functions, you gain a measure of confidence.  You must remember whenever your subconscious mind accepts an idea; it immediately begins to execute it.  It uses all its mighty resources to that end and mobilizes all the mental and spiritual laws of your deeper mind.  This law is true for good or bad ideas.  Consequently, if you use it negatively, it brings trouble, failure, and confusion.  When you use it constructively, it brings guidance, freedom, and peace of mind.

The right answer is inevitable when your thoughts are positive, constructive, and loving.  From this it is perfectly obvious that the only thing you have to do in order to overcome failure is to get your subconscious to accept your idea or request by feeling its reality now, and the law of your mind will do the rest.  Turn over your request with faith and confidence, and your subconscious will take over and answer for you.

You will always fail to get results by trying to use mental coercion – your subconscious mind does not respond to coercion, it responds to your faith or conscious mind acceptance.

Your failure to get results may also arise from such statements as: “Things are getting worse.”  “I will never get an answer.”  “I see no way out.”  “It is hopeless.”  “I don’t know what to do.”  “I’m all mixed up.”  When you use such statements, you get no response or cooperation from your subconscious mind.  Like a soldier marking time, you neither go forward nor backward; in other words, you don’t get anywhere.

If you get into a taxi and give half dozen different directions to the driver in five minutes, he would become hopelessly confused and probably would refuse to take you anywhere.  It is the same when working with your subconscious mind.  There must be a clear-cut idea in your mind.  You must arrive at the definite decision that there is a way out, a solution to the vexing problem in sickness.  Only the infinite intelligence within your subconscious knows the answer.  When you come to that clear-cut conclusion in your conscious mind, your mind is then made up, and according to your belief is it done unto you.

Easy does it

A house owner once remonstrated with a furnace repairman for charging two hundred dollars for fixing the boiler.  The mechanic said, “I charged five cents for the missing bolt and one hundred ninety-nine dollars and ninety-five cents for knowing what was wrong.”

Similarly, your subconscious mind is the master mechanic, the all-wise one, who knows ways and means of healing any organ of your body, as well as your affairs.  Decree health, and your subconscious will establish it, but relaxation is the key.  “Easy does it.”  Do not be concerned with details and means, but know the end result.  Get the feel of the happy solution to your problem whether it is health, finances, or employment.  Remember how you felt after you had recovered from a severe state of illness.  Bear in mind that your feeling is the touchstone of all subconscious demonstration.  Your new idea must be felt subjectively in a finished state, not the future, but as coming about now.

Infer no opponent, use imagination and not will power

In using your subconscious mind you infer no opponent, you use no will power.  You imagine the end and the freedom state.  You will find your intellect trying to get in the way, but persist in maintaining a simple, childlike, miracle-making faith.  Picture yourself without the ailment or problem.  Imagine the emotional accompaniment of the freedom state you crave.  Cut out all red tape from the process.  The simple way is the best.

How disciplined imagination works wonders

A wonderful way to get a response from your subconscious mind is through disciplined or scientific imagination.  As previously pointed out, your subconscious mind is the builder of the body and controls all its vital functions.

The Bible says, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.  To believe is to accept something as true, or to live in the state of being it.  As you sustain this mood, you shall experience the joy of the answered prayer!

The three steps to success in prayer

The usual procedure is as follows:

1.  Take a look at the problem.
2.  Turn to the solution or way out known only to the subconscious mind.
3. Rest in a sense of deep conviction that it is done.

Do not weaken your prayer by saying, “I wish I might be healed.”  “I hope so.”  Your feeling about the work to be done is “the boss.”  Harmony is yours.  Know that health is yours.  Become intelligent by becoming a vehicle for the infinite healing power of the subconscious mind.  Pass on the idea of health to your subconscious mind to the point of conviction; then relax.  Get yourself off your hands.  Say to the condition and circumstance, “This, too, shall pass.”  Through relaxation you impress your subconscious mind enabling the kinetic energy behind the idea to take over and bring it into concrete realization.

The law of reversed effort and why you get the opposite of what you pray for

Coué, the famous psychologist from France who visited America about forty years ago, defined the law of reversed effort as follows: “When your desires and imagination are in conflict your imagination invariably gains the day.”

If, for example, you were asked to walk a plank on the floor, you would do so without question.  Now suppose the same plank were placed twenty feet up in the air between two walls, would you walk it?  Your desire to walk it would be counteracted by your imagination or fear of falling.  Your dominant idea, which would be the picture of falling, would conquer.  Your desire, will, or effort to walk on the plank would be reversed, and the dominant idea of failure would be reinforced.

Mental effort is invariably self-defeated, eventuating always in the opposite of what is desired.  The suggestions of powerlessness to overcome the condition dominate the mind; your subconscious is always controlled by the dominant idea.  Your subconscious will accept the stronger of two contradictory propositions.  The effortless way is the better.

If you say, “I want a healing, but I can’t get it;” “I try so hard;” “I force myself to pray;” “I use all the will power I have,” you must realize that your error lies in your effort.  Never try to compel the subconscious mind to accept your idea by exercising will power.  Such attempts are doomed to failure, and you get the opposite of what you prayed for.

The following is a rather common experience.  Students, when taking examinations and reading through their papers, find that all their knowledge has suddenly deserted them.  Their minds become appalling blanks, and they are unable to recall one relevant thought.  The more they grit their teeth and summon the powers of the will, the further the answers seem to flee.  But, when they have left the examination room and the mental pressure relaxes, the answers they were seeking flow tantalizingly back into their minds.  Trying to force themselves to remember was the cause of their failure.  This is an example of the law of reversed effort whereby you get the opposite of what you asked or prayed for.

The conflict of desire and imagination must be reconciled

To use mental force is to presuppose that there is opposition.  When your mind is concentrated on the means to overcome a problem, it is no longer concerned with the obstacle.  Matt. 18:19 says, If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.  Who are these two?  It means the harmonious union or agreement between your conscious and subconscious on any idea, desire, or mental image.  When there is no longer any quarrel in either part of your mind, your prayer will be answered.  The two agreeing may also be represented as you and your desire, your thought and feeling, your idea and emotion, your desire and imagination.

You avoid all conflict between your desires and imagination by entering into a drowsy, sleepy state which brings all effort to a minimum.  The conscious mind is submerged to a great extent when in a sleepy state.  The best time to impregnate your subconscious is prior to sleep.  The reason for this is that the highest degree of outcropping of the subconscious occurs prior to sleep and just after we awaken.  In this state the negative thoughts and imagery, which tend to neutralize your desire and so prevent acceptance by your subconscious mind no longer present themselves.  When you imagine the reality of the fulfilled desire and feel the thrill of accomplishment, your subconscious brings about the realization of your desire.

A great many people solve all their dilemmas and problems by the play of their controlled, directed, and disciplined imagination, knowing that whatever they imagine and feel as true will and must come to pass.  The following will clearly illustrate how a young girl overcame the conflict between her desire and her imagination.  She desired a harmonious solution to her legal problem, yet her mental imagery was constantly on failure, loss, bankruptcy, and poverty.  It was a complicated lawsuit and there was one postponement after another with no solution in sight.

At my suggestion, she got into a sleepy, drowsy state each night prior to sleep, and she began to imagine the happy ending, feeling it to the best of her ability.  She knew that the image in her mind had to agree with her heart’s desire.  Prior to sleep she began to dramatize as vividly as possible her lawyer having an animated discussion with her regarding the outcome.  She would ask him questions, and he would answer her appropriately.  He would say to her over and over again, “There has been a perfect, harmonious solution.  The case has been settled out of court.”  During the day when fear thoughts came into her mind, she would run her mental movie with gestures, voice, and sound equipment.  She could easily imagine the sound of his voice, smile, and mannerism.  She ran this mental picture so often; it became a subjective pattern, a regular train track.  At the end of a few weeks her attorney called her and confirmed objectively what she had been imagining and feeling as true subjectively.

This is really what the Psalmist meant when he wrote, Let the words of my mouth [your thoughts, mental images, good] and the meditations of my heart [your feeling, nature, emotion] be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord [the law of your subconscious mind], my strength, and my redeemer [the power and wisdom of your subconscious mind can redeem you from sickness, bondage, and misery].  Psalm 19:14.

Ideas worth recalling

1. Mental coercion or too much effort shows anxiety and fear, which block your answer.  Easy does it.
2. When your mind is relaxed and you accept an idea, your subconscious goes to work to execute the idea.
3. Think and plan independently of traditional methods.  Know that there is always an answer and a solution to every problem.
4. Do not be overly concerned with the beating of your heart, with the breathing of your lungs, or the functions of any part of your anatomy.  Lean heavily upon your subconscious and proclaim frequently that Divine right action is taking place.
5. The feeling of health produces health; the feeling of wealth produces wealth.  How do you feel?
6. Imagination is your most powerful faculty.  Imagine what is lovely and of good report.  You are what you imagine yourself to be.
7. You avoid conflict between your conscious and subconscious in the sleepy state.  Imagine the fulfillment of your desire over and over again prior to sleep.  Sleep in peace and wake in joy.

I really enjoy studying works by Napoleon Hill.  I know - some of it (including today's addition to The Free Success Manual Download Library) is 90 years young.  Think and Grow Rich was first published 73 years ago.  Yet, there is something so timeless about Hill's classic Success Manuals.

In today's world, where much, if not most, of our information is obtained via the Internet, I find so much lacking in the communicated message.  For me, a 500-word robot post on an autoblog is not capable of providing anything substantive, meaningful and practical.  Indeed, the basis for so much of these graveyard sites is not to provide information, but rather to use snipets of information to attract some level of traffic to the site for advertising purposes.

Napoleon Hill's works, on the other hand, are at the opposite end of the spectrum.  His deep, thorough analysis of the fundamentals of attaining Success, Wealth and Prosperity are as sound today as they were when originally written.  Consider the 12,000 men and women he studied just for "The Magic Ladder to Success" - the subject of today's post.  The great thing about Napoleon Hill is that he already did all of the work for us so we don't have to spend the next 20 years engaging is such an evolved project.  What a treasure trove of useful information!

The key to gaining the most out of any of Napoleon Hill's works is to never, never simply read the book and then return it to the bookshelf to collect dust.  Hill's books, articles and essays are true working Success Manuals to be studied in continuum, consulted consistently, and actively implemented into daily life.  Yes, we MUST put Hill's concepts into action; otherwise, his efforts are of no use.

The version of "The Magic Ladder to Success" the subject of today's post is not the lengthier book version, but the essay that appeared in Napoleon Hill's Magazine in April 1921.  It is a great introduction to the greater work that was published years later.  A true Success Manual for the ages for everyone.  Enjoy!
