There is an eternal law through the operation of which we reap that which we sow. When you select the rule of conduct by which you guide yourself in your transactions with others, you will be fair and just, very likely, if you know that you are setting into motion, by that selection, a power that will run its course for weal or woe in the lives of others, returning, finally, to help or to hinder you, according to its nature.
Accurate thought involves two fundamentals which all who indulge in it must observe. First, to think accurately you must separate facts from mere information. There is much “information” available to you that is not based upon facts. Second, you must separate facts into two classes; namely, the important and the unimportant, or, the relevant and the irrelevant. Only by so doing can you think clearly.
Enthusiasm is a state of mind that inspires and arouses one to put action into the task at hand. It does more than this – it is contagious, and vitally affects not only the enthusiast, but all with whom he comes in contact. When your own mind is vibrating at a high rate, because it has been stimulated with Enthusiasm, that vibration registers in the minds of all within its radius, and especially in the minds of those with whom you come in close contact. In Lesson Seven, Napoleon Hill demonstrates that Enthusiasm is not merely a figure of speech; it is a vital force that you can harness and use with profit.
The development of Self-confidence starts with the elimination of this demon called fear, which sits upon a man’s shoulder and whispers into his ear, “You can’t do it – you are afraid to try – you are afraid of public opinion – you are afraid that you will fail – you are afraid you have not the ability.” Science has found a deadly weapon with which to put it to flight, and this lesson on Self-confidence has brought you this weapon for use in your battle with the world-old enemy of progress, fear.
The object of this lesson is not to inform you as to what your lifework should be, for indeed this could be done with accuracy only after you had been completely analyzed, but it is intended as a means of impressing upon your mind a clear conception of the value of a definite purpose of some nature, and of the value of understanding the principle of organized effort as a means of attaining the necessary power with which to materialize your definite purpose.
The course has been created for the serious-minded person who devotes at least a portion of his or her time to the business of succeeding in life. In this Introduction you will find a description of a newly discovered law of psychology which is the very foundation stone of all outstanding personal achievements. This law has been referred to by the author as the “Master Mind,” meaning a mind that is developed through the harmonious cooperation of two or more people who ally themselves for the purpose of accomplishing any given task.
IS THERE some force, or factor, or power, or science – call it what you will – which a few people understand and use to overcome their difficulties and achieve outstanding success? I firmly believe that there is, and it is my purpose in this book to try to explain it so that you can use it if you desire.
Starting with certain incontrovertible scientific facts, all these things logically follow, and that therefore, however far these speculations may carry us beyond our past experience, they nowhere break the thread of an intelligible connection of cause and effect. In “The Creative Process in the Individual,” Thomas Troward explains The Triumph of Principle Over Precedent – The Working Out of an IDEA to Its Logical Conclusions in Spite of the Accumulated Testimony of All Past Experience to the Contrary.
THE PRINCIPLE reasons for failure are: Lack of confidence and too much effort. Many people block answers to their prayers by failing to fully comprehend the workings of their subconscious mind. When you know how your mind functions, you gain a measure of confidence. You must remember whenever your subconscious mind accepts an idea; it immediately begins to execute it. It uses all its mighty resources to that end and mobilizes all the mental and spiritual laws of your deeper mind.
Napoleon Hill devoted his entire life to the study of Success and the men and women who attained it. Not just “ordinary” Success, but extraordinary Success. “The Magic Ladder to Success” has been published in many forms, and further, has been delivered in practically every city in the United States, in a personal lecture, before hundreds of thousands of people. Eventually, it was published as a book, prior to Hill’s most notable work, “Think and Grow Rich!” The following version of “The Magic Ladder to Success,” shorter than the book version, was published in “Napoleon Hill’s Magazine” in April 1921.
Don’t ever allow ANYONE to control YOUR Thoughts, Emotions and Behavior. You – and ONLY you – assume, establish and control YOUR State of Mind. Regardless of what is transpiring in the external world, i.e., the events, circumstances and behavior of people, you are the ONLY one responsible for YOUR State of Mind. Decide today – right here, right now – to assume a State of Mind that demands Success and Riches and is not willing to accept Poverty or Failure in any amount or at any level. Decide today – right here, right now – to assume a State of Mind of which YOU have total and absolute control and that YOU will not allow or permit YOUR State of Mind to be influenced or controlled by any person, event or circumstance.
All that you seek comes only from the application and operation of a great LAW, which the successful men and women of the world make use of either consciously or unconsciously. And this great LAW is as well defined as is any other Natural Law, and when grasped and understood may be practiced and operated just as may any of its related Laws on other planes of universal activity. There is no such thing in Nature as blind chance, accident, or uncaused lack. Everything in Nature operates in accordance with LAW. LAW underlies everything. All progress, whether physical, mental, moral, spiritual or financial, is based upon LAW. And he who wins success in any line does so because he has followed the LAW or LAWS pertaining to his business, whether he does it consciously or unconsciously.
That which possesses in the world within is Mind. That which enables us to possess in the world without is also Mind. Mind manifests itself as thoughts, mental pictures, words, and actions. Thought is therefore Creative. Our power to use Thought to create the conditions, surroundings, and other experiences of life, depends upon our habit of thinking. What we do depends upon what we are; what we are is the result of what we habitually think. Before we can Do, we must BE; before we can BE we must control and direct the force of Thought within us.
Never say, “die.” Once the seed is planted, your progress must continue. Each strong, clean thought brings you nearer the goal. When you have brought your mind into a condition of calmness, thoughts will come to you, ideas will suggest themselves (for thoughts come from without), you never generate important ideas yourself then you have accumulated strength that enables you to carry out the suggestion to a successful conclusion.
The state of your conditioning is absolutely critical to the state of your life and it is the most important factor – out of the many factors and elements – in whether or not you will achieve the life that you Desire. No matter how much or what you study, or what actions you take (or fail to take), if your conditioning is “faulty,” you will not achieve your Desires. Indeed, the Law of Attraction – as well as the other Universal Laws – is absolutely useless if you have, and engage in, faulty conditioning.
Power-Consciousness is what you feel when you know that you CAN do a thing and you know HOW to do the thing. If you KNOW that you CAN succeed, and you KNOW HOW to succeed, Success is within your grasp; for if you know that you can do a thing and know that you know how to do it, it is impossible that you should fail to do it, if you really try. When you are in full Power-Consciousness, you will approach the task in an absolutely Successful frame of mind. Every thought will be a Successful thought, every action a Successful action; and if every thought and action is Successful, the sum-total of all your actions cannot be anything other than SUCCESS.
Much has been written over the years as to the various elements necessary to attain Success in any endeavor, particularly wealth, prosperity and financial Success. In this regard, the “Law of Attraction” has probably received more attention than any other topic over the past few years. Yet, few still do not truly understand the Law, how it works, and how to properly apply it to achieve the desired results.
A prerequisite to Succeed is that of attaining, cultivating and executing Self-Confidence. Generally, the greater one’s Self-Confidence, the greater the Success. How often have we heard the maxim that Success goes to “the man who thinks he can?” That is, the person who has the Self-Confidence in his or her ability to Succeed is the one who Succeeds. A careful analysis of the most Successful individuals of the world shows that the dominating quality that they ALL possessed was Self-Confidence. Nobody can bring you Success except yourself, and whether or not Success is attained is a function of your Self-Confidence.
How This Book Can Work Miracles in Your Life – I have seen miracles happen to men and women in all walks of life all over the world. Miracles will happen to you, too – when you begin using the magic power of your subconscious mind. This book is designed to teach you that your habitual thinking and imagery mold, fashion, and create your destiny; for as a man thinketh in his subconscious mind, so is he.
The Master Mind is consciously, deliberately, and voluntarily built up, cultivated, developed, and used; the ordinary mind, contrarily, is usually unconsciously built up, cultivated, and developed, without voluntary effort on its own part, but solely by the force and power of impressions from the outside world, and is usually employed and used with little or no conscious direction by its own will. In short, the ordinary mind is a mere creature of circumstances, driven hither and thither by the winds of outside forces, and lacking the guidance of the hand on the wheel, and being without the compass of Knowledge; while the Master Mind proceeds in the true course mapped out by Intelligence, and determined by will and steered by the Master-hand at the wheel, under the direction of the compass of Intelligence.
