Even Professor Napoleon Hill admits the importance of Lesson Eleven in the opening pages of this Success Manual Classic:

This is at one and the same time the most important, the most interesting and the most difficult to present lesson of this entire course on the Law of Success.  It is important because it deals with a principle which runs through the entire course.  It is interesting for the same reason.  It is difficult to present for the reason that it will carry the average student far beyond the boundary line of his common experiences and into a realm of thought in which he is not accustomed to dwell.

Very well – let those who are satisfied with this standard of success have it; but some there are who will want to go higher up the ladder, in search of success which is measured in other than material standards, and it is for their benefit in particular that this and the subsequent lessons of this course are intended.

“I do not believe that I can afford to deceive others – I know I cannot afford to deceive myself!”  This must be the motto of the accurate thinker.

All thought is creative!  However, not all thought is constructive or positive.  If you think thoughts of misery and poverty and see no way to avoid these conditions, then your thoughts will create those very conditions and curse you with them.  But reverse the order, and think thoughts of a positive, expectant nature and your thoughts will create those conditions.

Lesson Eleven, like many of the other Lessons comprising the multi-volume Law of Success series by Napoleon Hill, contains an "After-the-Lesson Visit with the Author."  The discussion in Lesson Eleven is "Failure." 

And a great discussion it is.

Here are a few select quotes on the topic of Failure, taken from Lesson Eleven:

FAILURE is generally accepted as a curse.  But few people ever understand that failure is a curse only when it is accepted as such.  But few ever learn the truth that FAILURE is seldom permanent.  Failure teaches men lessons which they would never learn without it.  Moreover, it teaches in a language that is universal.  Among the great lessons taught by failure is that of HUMILITY.

Most people who believe themselves to be failures are not failures at all.  Most conditions which people look upon as failure are nothing more than temporary defeat.  Do not use the word FAILURE carelessly.  Remember, carrying a burdensome cross temporarily is not FAILURE.  If you have the real seed of success within you, a little adversity and temporary defeat will only serve to nurture that seed and cause it to burst forth into maturity.

When Divine Intelligence wants a great man or woman to render some needed service in the world, the fortunate one is tested out through some form of FAILURE.  If you are undergoing what you believe to be failure, have patience; you may be passing through your testing time.

No capable executive would select, as his lieutenants, those whom he had not tested for reliability, loyalty, perseverance and other essential qualities.

Responsibility, and all that goes with it in the way of remuneration, always gravitates to the person who will not accept temporary defeat as permanent failure.

Burn your bridges behind you and observe how well you work when you KNOW THAT YOU HAVE NO RETREAT.

A street car conductor got a leave of absence while he tried out a position in a great mercantile business.  “If I do not succeed in holding my new position,” he remarked to a friend, “I can always come back to the old job.”

At the end of the month he was back, completely cured of all ambition to do anything except work on a street car.  Had he resigned instead of asking for a leave of absence he might have made good in the new job.

Study the roadway of life, in the picture at the beginning of this essay, and observe that everyone who travels that road carries a cross.  Remember, as you take inventory of your own burdens, that Nature’s richest gifts go to those who meet FAILURE without flinching or whining.

Nature’s ways are not easily understood.  If they were, no one could be tested for great responsibility, with FAILURE!

There is no FAILURE.  That which looks to be failure is usually nothing but temporary defeat.  Make sure that you do not accept it as PERMANENT!

Last night I picked up the phenomenal Success Manual "The Secret of the Ages" by Robert Collier, which I have read several times over and more.

As is my habit, I randomly selected a chapter to read.  My selection was Chapter XV, entitled, "The Master of Your Fate."

I don't know the last time I read this particular passage, but it sure resonated with me last night.  It was as if I had never read it before, yet I know I have as the chapter was filled with notes, underlining, highlighting, etc.

Well, the chapter had such an impact on me that I couldn't wait to reproduce it as a Success Passage today.  And, so, here it is.

Where will you be at 65?  Five men in six at the age of 65 are living on charity.  Just one in twenty is able to live without working at 65.

That is what the American Bankers Association found when it took one hundred healthy men at 25 and traced them to 65.

These hundred were healthy to start with.  They all had the same chance for success.  The difference lay in the way they used their MINDS.  Ninety-five out of one hundred just do the tasks that are set them.  They have no faith in themselves – no initiative – none of the courage that starts things.  They are always directed or controlled by someone else.

At 65, where will you be?  Dependent or independent?  Struggling for a living – accepting charity from someone else – or at the top of the heap?

“I Am the Master of My Fate”

"I am the Master of my fate."

Until you have learned that, you will never attain life’s full success.  Your fate is in your own hands.  You have the making of it.  What you are going to be six months or a year from now depends upon what you think today.

So make your choice now: Are you going to bow down to matter as the only power?  Are you going to look upon your environment as something that has been wished upon you and for which you are in no way responsible?  Or are you going to try to realize in your daily life that matter is merely an aggregation of protons and electrons subject entirely to the control of Mind, that your environment, your success, your happiness, are all of your own making, and that if you are not satisfied with conditions as they are, you have but to visualize them as you would have them be in order to change them?

The former is the easier way right now – the easy way that leads to the hell of poverty and fear and old age.

But the latter is the way that brings you to your Heart’s Desire.

And merely because this Power of Universal Mind is invisible, is that any reason to doubt it?  The greatest powers of Nature are invisible.  Love is invisible, but what greater power is there in life?  Joy is invisible, happiness, peace, contentment.  The radio is invisibles yet you hear it.  It is a product of the law governing sound waves.  Law is invisible, yet you see the manifestation of different laws every day.  To run a locomotive, you study the law of applying power, and you apply that law when you make the locomotive go.

These things are not the result of invention.  The law has existed from the beginning.  It merely waited for man to learn how to apply it.  If man had known how to call upon Universal Mind to the right extent, he could have applied the law of sound waves, the law of steam, ages ago.  Invention is merely a revelation and an unfoldment of Universal Wisdom.

That same Universal Wisdom knows millions of other laws of which man has not even a glimmering.  You can call upon It.  You can use that Wisdom as your own.  By thinking of things as they might be instead of as they are, you will eventually find some great Need.  And to find a need is the first step towards finding the supply to satisfy that need.  You’ve got to know what you are after, before you can send the Genie-of-your-Mind a-seeking of it in Universal Mind.

The Acre of Diamonds

You remember the story of the poor Boer farmer who struggled for years to glean a livelihood out of his rocky soil, only to give it up in despair and go off to seek his fortune elsewhere.  Years later, coming back to his old farm, he found it swarming with machinery and life – more wealth being dug out of it every day than he had ever dreamed existed.  It was the great Kimberley Diamond Mine!

Most of us are like that poor Boer farmer.  We struggle along under our surface power, never dreaming of the giant power that could be ours if we would but dig a little deeper – rouse that great Inner Self who can give us more even than any acre of diamonds.

As Orison Swett Marden put it:

“The majority of failures in life are simply the victims of their mental defeats.  Their conviction that they cannot succeed as others do robs them of that vigor and determination which self confidence imparts, and they don’t even half try to succeed.

“There is no philosophy by which a man can do a thing when he thinks he can’t.  The reason why millions of men are plodding along in mediocrity today, many of them barely making a living, when they have the ability to do something infinitely bigger, is because they lack confidence in themselves.  They don’t believe they can do the bigger thing that would lift them out of their rut of mediocrity and poverty; they are not winners mentally.

“The way always opens for the determined soul, the man of faith and courage.

“It is the victorious mental attitude, the consciousness of power, the sense of mastership, that does the big things in this world.  If you haven’t this attitude, if you lack self confidence, begin now to cultivate it.

“A highly magnetized piece of steel will attract and lift a piece of unmagnetized steel ten times its own weight.  Demagnetize that same piece of steel and it will be powerless to attract or lift even a feather’s weight.

“Now, my friends, there is the same difference between the man who is highly magnetized by a sublime faith in himself, and the man who is de-magnetized by his lack of faith, his doubts, his fears, that there is between the magnetized and the de-magnetized pieces of steel.  If two men of equal ability, one magnetized by a divine self confidence, the other demagnetized by fear and doubt, are given similar tasks, one will succeed and the other will fail.  The self confidence of the one multiplies his powers a hundred-fold; the lack of it subtracts a hundred-fold from the power of the other.”

Have you ever thought how much of your time is spent in choosing what you shall do, which task you will try, which way you shall go?  Every day is a day of decision.  We are constantly at crossroads, in our business dealings, our social relations, in our homes, there is always the necessity of a choice.  How important then that we have faith in ourselves and in that Infinite intelligence within.  “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.” “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

In this ever-changing material age, with seemingly complex forces all about us, we sometimes cry out that we are driven by force of circumstances.  Yet the fact remains that we do those things which we choose to do.  For even though we may not wish to go a certain way, we allow ourselves to pursue it because it offers the least resistance.

Now, how about you?  Are you taking active control of your own thought?  Are you imaging upon your mind only such things as you want to see realized?  Are you thinking healthy thoughts, happy thoughts, successful thoughts?

The difference between the successful man and the unsuccessful one is not so much a matter of training or equipment.  It is not a question of opportunity or luck.  It is just in the way they each of them look at things.

The successful man sees an opportunity, seizes upon it, and moves upward another rung on the ladder of success.  It never occurs to him that he may fail.  He sees only the opportunity, he visions what he can do with it, and all the forces within and without him combine to help him win.

The unsuccessful man sees the same opportunity, he wishes that he could take advantage of it, but he is fearful that his ability or his money or his credit may not be equal to the task.  He is like a timid bather, putting in one foot and then drawing it swiftly back again – and while he hesitates some bolder spirit dashes in and beats him to the goal.

Nearly every man can look back – and not so far back either with must of us – and say, “If I had taken that chance, I would be much better off now.”

You will never need to say it again, once you realize that the future is entirely within your own control.  It is not subject to the whims of fortune or the capriciousness of luck.  There is but one Universal Mind and that mind contains naught but good.  In it are no images of Evil.  From it comes no lack of supply.  Its ideas are as numberless as the grains of sand on the seashore.  And those ideas comprise all wealth, all power, all happiness.

You have only to image vividly enough on your subconscious mind the thing you wish, to draw from Universal Mind the necessary ideas to bring it into being.  You have only to keep in mind the experiences you wish to meet, in order to control your own future.

When Frank A. Vanderlip, former President of the National City Bank, was a struggling youngster, he asked a successful friend what one thing he would urge a young man to do who was anxious to make his way in the world.  “Look as though you have already succeeded,” his friend told him.  Shakespeare expresses the same thought in another way – “Assume a virtue if you have it not.”  Look the part.  Dress the part.  Act the part.  Be successful in your own thought first.  It won’t be long before you will be successful before the world as well.

David V. Bush, in his book “Applied Psychology and Scientific Living,” says:

“Man is like the wireless operator.  Man is subject to miscellaneous wrong thought currents if his mind is not in tune with the Infinite, or if he is not keyed up to higher vibrations than those of negation.

“A man who thinks courageous thoughts sends these courageous thought waves through the universal ether until they lodge in the consciousness of someone who is tuned to the same courageous key.  Think a strong thought, a courageous thought, a prosperity thought, and these thoughts will be received by someone who is strong, courageous and prosperous.

“It is just as easy to think in terms of abundance as to think in terms of poverty.  If we think poverty thoughts we become the sending and receiving stations for poverty thoughts.  We send out a ‘poverty’ mental wireless and it reaches the consciousness of some poverty-stricken ‘receiver.’ We get what we think.

“It is just as easy to think in terms of abundance, opulence and prosperity as it is to think in terms of lack, limitation and poverty.

“If a man will raise his rate of vibration by faith currents or hope currents, these vibrations go through the Universal Mind and lodge in the consciousness of people who are keyed to the same tune.  Whatever you think is sometime, somewhere, received by a person who is tuned to your thought key.

“If a man is out of work and he thinks thoughts of success, prosperity, harmony, position and growth, just as surely as his thoughts are things – as Shakespeare says – someone will receive his vibrations of success, prosperity, harmony, position and growth.

“If we are going to be timid, selfish, penurious and picayunish in our thinking, these thought waves which we have started in the universal ether will go forth until they come to a mental receiving station of the same caliber.  ‘Birds of a feather flock together,’ and minds of like thinking are attracted one to the other.

“If you need money, all you have to do is to send up your vibrations to a strong, courageous receiving station, and someone who can meet your needs will be attracted to you or you to him.”

When you learn that you are entitled to win – in any right undertaking in which you may be engaged – you will win.  When you learn that you have a right to a legitimate dominion over your own affairs, you will have dominion over them.  The promise is that we can do all things through the Mind that was in Christ.

Universal Mind plays no favorites.  No one human being has any more power than any other.  It is simply that few of us use the power that is in our hands.  The great men of the world are in no wise SUPER Beings.  They are ordinary creatures like you and me, who have stumbled upon the way of drawing upon their subconscious mind – and through it upon the Universal Mind.  Speaking of Henry Ford’s phenomenal success, his friend Thomas A. Edison said of him – “He draws upon his subconscious mind.”

The secret of being what you have it n you to be is simply this: Decide now what it is you want of life, exactly what you wish your future to be.  Plan it out in detail.  Vision it from start to finish.  See yourself as you are now, Being those things you have always wanted to do.  Make them REAL in your mind’s eye – feel them, live them, believe them, especially at the moment of going to sleep, when it is easiest to reach your subconscious mind – and you will soon be seeing them in real life.

It matters not whether you are young or old, rich or poor.  The time to begin is NOW.  It is never too late.  Remember those lines of Appleton’s:

Success Strategy and Mastery Move: Working with the Law of Cause and Effect

We live in a world of “cause and effect.”

Understand and apply the Law of Cause and Effect in your daily actions, and your life will change – dramatically.  Worked correctly, the Law of Cause and Effect can markedly alter the course of your life in the direction that you Desire.  This is a Law that CAN be worked tremendously to your advantage.

Too often, we become so deeply ensconced in the daily busy-ness of our lives that we fail to realize the immense powerful impact that the Law of Cause and Effect plays in the results that we achieve (or fail to achieve).

Make no mistake, however – the Law is always at work.  Whether we consciously work it to our benefit, or whether we neglect it in its entirety, the Law of Cause and Effect operates to shape the Results of our lives.  We can choose, therefore, to work with the Law, or we can choose to ignore it.  Either way, the Law’s force and impact on our lives is still the same.

So, it might be a good idea to revisit this important Success Key.  And, perhaps, re-discover a few refresher points along the way.

Cause and Effect Refresher

The Law of Cause and Effect simply embodies the principle that every state (circumstance) that exists in the Universe is an effect created by an originating cause.  Or, stated conversely, every action is a cause that creates a resulting effect.

Consider the following fact pattern to demonstrate the Law of Cause and Effect (for those well-versed in this Law, please bear with me):

1. I saw or chop a tree (cause) and it falls down (effect).
2. I continue to saw the fallen tree (cause) and I create logs (effect).
3. I split the logs (cause) and I create firewood (effect).
4. I stack the firewood (cause) and I create a firewood pile (effect).
5. I leave the firewood pile sitting outside for one year (cause) and it becomes seasoned firewood (effect).
6. I take a piece of seasoned firewood and throw it into a fire in the fireplace (cause) and it burns (effect).
7. The firewood burns (cause) and the fire produces byproducts of ash, water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other gases (effects), which spew forth from the chimney (further effect).
8. The combustion byproducts of my burning firewood (cause) increase the level of CO2 in the atmosphere (effect); the increased level of CO2 in the atmosphere (cause) creates an increase in the “green house” effect (effect); the increased “green house” effect (cause) results in warmer surface water temperatures in the Arctic Ocean (effect); warmer surface water temperatures in the Arctic Ocean (cause) result in less ice in the winter months (effect); less ice in the Arctic Ocean during the winter months (cause) means that the resident polar bears are unable to complete their migration, which requires a frozen Arctic Ocean (effect) . . . etc.  The cycle goes on and on and on.

The Law of Cause and Effect underlies our human ability to understand and manipulate our environment; the very nature of science and scientific experimentation depends on it.  All scientific theory is proven or disproven through application of the Law of Cause and Effect.  Under scientific experimentation, a particular theory is tested and results (effects) are obtained.  If the theory holds true, under the Law of Cause and Effect, its results (effects) may be reproduced again and again under identical causes (test controls).

The Law of Gravity has been well established under Cause and Effect.

So has Newtown’s Third Law of Motion, which may be stated thusly: for every action (cause), there is an equal and opposite reaction (effect).

The Law of Cause and Effect in Our Lives

Human logic is founded on understanding the Law of Cause and Effect.  So are the circumstances that we presently experience.

In fact, where we are – right now – in our lives is the aggregate effect of all past causes.  As such, the world that we currently experience – our present circumstances – is merely an amalgamation of effects.

In his book, Awaken the Giant Within, Anthony Robbins explains this phenomena as follows:

 . . . the most powerful way to shape our lives is to get ourselves to take action.  The difference in the results that people produce comes down to what they’ve done differently from others in the same situations.  Different actions produce different results.  Why?  Because any action is a set cause in motion, and its effect builds on past effects to move us in a definite direction.  Every direction leads to an ultimate destination: our destiny.

If we Desire a different world tomorrow (effects), then we must change and reestablish the proper course of causes today.  If we Desire to Succeed tomorrow, then all we must do is implement the proper Success Causes today.

Sound simple.  It is.  On a conceptual basis, the fundamentals of the Law are really quite elementary.  On a practical basis, however, the Law takes on much greater sophistication.

Why?

First, it is not always possible to establish a bright line nexus (connection) between all of our causes and all of our effects.  As a result, we cannot conclude with certainty today what our Actions will produce as tomorrow’s Results.

Yes, sometimes it is easy – as in the firewood example, above, when I cut the tree with a saw, the tree WILL fall down.  However, much of what we do, and what we fail to do – while all causes of future effects – are not easy to predict with precision.  In fact, our lives encompass such an intricate web of countless causes and effects – simple and multiple – with intervening variables that most of the time it is virtually impossible to connect a single effect back to a specific single cause.  In our fact pattern scenario, for example, it is hard to see how burning firewood may result in migration issues for polar bears.  (Okay, perhaps today we see a cause and effect, but surely nobody connected the dots one hundred years ago).

In fact, a cause may have many effects.  And, an effect may be the result of multiple causes, each contributing in its own way to the ultimate Result.  And, as Anthony Robbins aptly notes, effects can be causes for further effects.

It does get complicated.

Because we cannot conclude with precision how today’s Actions impact and determine tomorrow’s Results, we must work indirectly and in a general sense.  For example, if we KNEW exactly what Actions today would result – with 100% precision – in a specific financial Success one year from now, well . . .  we would do it . . .  right?

So, attempting to establish an Action-Result nexus in a Cause and Effect context is a difficult proposition – assuming that it can be accomplished.

Second, and what most do not realize, is that it is not just our Actions that are the causes of our Results. 

Indeed, our Thoughts are also causes, and attempts to establish the connection between a particular line of thinking and the results that we experience in our lives as a direct result thereof (Thought-Result nexus) is even more difficult than attempting to establish an Action-Result nexus.  But, as sure as the sun rises tomorrow, our Thoughts shape our lives.  As the Success Manual’s web site tagline succinctly states above: “Achieving Success One Thought at a Time!”

In his Success Manual classic, As A Man Thinketh, James Allen states it perfectly.  The following quotes from Chapter 2, Effect of Thought on Circumstance, are on point:

Man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth.  If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed-seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind.

That circumstances grow out of thought every man knows who has for any length of time practiced self-control and self-purification, for he will have noticed that the alteration in his circumstances has been in exact ratio with his altered mental condition.

The outer world of circumstance shapes itself to the inner world of thought, and both pleasant and unpleasant external conditions are factors, which make for the ultimate good of the individual.  As the reaper of his own harvest, man learns both by suffering and bliss.

Circumstance does not make the man; it reveals him to himself.

Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.

Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.

Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results; bad thoughts and actions can never produce good results.  This is but saying that nothing can come from corn but corn, nothing from nettles but nettles.  Men understand this law in the natural world, and work with it; but few understand it in the mental and moral world (though its operation there is just as simple and undeviating), and they, therefore, do not cooperate with it.

Let a man radically alter his thoughts, and he will be astonished at the rapid transformation it will effect in the material conditions of his life.

A particular train of thought persisted in, be it good or bad, cannot fail to produce its results on the character and circumstances.  A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances.

Re-read that last paragraph again: “A particular train of thought persisted in, be it good or bad, cannot fail to produce its results on the character and circumstances.  A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances.”  That really sums it up – while we cannot directly chose tomorrow’s circumstances, we can choose our thoughts today, and today’s thoughts shape tomorrow’s circumstances.

This statement accurately summarizes the nature of the Law of Cause and Effect and how best to use it to our advantage.

The Law of Cause and Effect by Another Name

The Law of Attraction is based entirely on the Law of Cause and Effect.  And, Emerson has called the Law of Cause and Effect the “Law of Laws.”  It has also been called “Heaven’s First Law.”

We have all heard of “Karma.”  As I understand it, Karma, in Indian religions, is the concept of “action” or “deed,” understood as that which causes the entire cycle of cause and effect (i.e., the cycle called samsãra) originating in ancient India and treated in Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Sikh philosophies. (Anybody care to add some comments here?)

So, what does this all mean and what points can we take away from this discussion to assist us on our Path to Success?

Plenty.

Success Is an Effect

Success is an effect.  Understand and execute the cause(s), and you, too, will Succeed.

In his Success Manual Classic, How to Get What You Want (or, as I like to call it, How to Succeed in Anything), Wallace D. Wattles states the following:

Getting what you want is success; and success is an effect, coming from the application of a cause.  Success is essentially the same in all cases; the difference is in the things the successful people want, but not in the success.  Success is essentially the same, whether it results in the attainment of health, wealth, development or position; success is attainment, without regard to the things attained.  And it is a law in nature that like causes always produce like effects; therefore, since success is the same in all cases, the cause of success must be the same in all cases.

The cause of success is always in the person who succeeds; you will see that this must be true, because if the cause of success were in nature, outside the person, then all persons similarly situated would succeed . . .

It is, therefore, mathematically certain that you can succeed if you will find out the cause of success, and develop it to sufficient strength, and apply it properly to your work; for the application of a sufficient cause can not fail to produce a given effect.  If there is a failure anywhere, of any kind, it is because the cause was either not sufficient or was not properly applied.

The cause of success is some power within you; you have the power to develop any power to a limitless extent; for there is no end to mental growth; you can increase the strength of this power indefinitely, and so you can make it strong enough to do what you want to do, and to get what you want to get; when it is strong enough you can learn how to apply it to the work, and therefore, you can certainly succeed.  All you have to learn is what is the cause of success, and how it must be applied.

Because Success is an effect, in order to Succeed tomorrow, we MUST execute the right causes today that produce Successful results tomorrow.

So, where do we begin?

The Causes of Success

What are the primary causes of the effect of Success?  Well, that is what this site is all about.  That is what each of the books available in our Success Manual Free Download Library is about.  It all begins with Thought – the original Cause of the Effect of Success.

What kind of Thought (cause) results in Success (effect)?

We can start with what Wattles calls “Active Power Consciousness” in his book, How to Get What You Want.

Or, as Anthony Robbins explores in Awaken the Giant Within, “the Power of Decision.”

Or, as Napoleon Hill asserts throughout Think and Grow Rich, the proper “State of Mind.”

In each case, it is Thought.  Sow the right Thoughts – Thoughts of Success – and you will reap Success.  What we Think, we become.

As an excellent starting point, we MUST act as the gatekeeper of our Mind, and bar (and refuse to entertain) thoughts of fear, doubt, worry, failure, negativity, resentment, jealousy, and the like.  Our Mind, as James Allen points out, is like a garden and we are the gardener.  If we don’t plant – in affirmative fashion – Successful Thoughts, then whatever seeds do happen to fall in (random thoughts) will grab hold and overtake our garden.  Regardless of whether, and to what extent, that we tend the Garden of our Mind, it will bring forth, it will produce.  It is only a matter of whether it is useful fruit or useless weeds.

Random gardening is no way to cultivate and harvest a bountiful crop.  Similarly, random thinking is no way to Succeed.  Why leave your Garden to chance?  Tend it carefully!

I strongly urge that you read James Allen's  A Man Thinketh and Wallace D. Wattles' How to Get What You Want every day for the next thirty (30) days.  This is a surefire way to tend your Success Garden well and initiate the proper root causes today in order to achieve the effects of Success tomorrow.

 I STRONGLY believe in The Habit of Dong More Than Paid For - of providing GREATER value and service in exchange for the fees or payment received.  I have personally practiced this law for many, many years and I can attest to its amazing Power.  Frankly, it works - and it works quite well.

There are two primary laws invoked when one provides greater value (of service or goods) in exchange for the payment received therefor.  First, is the Law of Compensation; second, is the Law of Increasing Returns. Both Laws are premised upon the "Law of Laws" - the Law of Cause and Effect.

The Law of Compensation holds that whenever you render value through service, you will be justly compensated.  Perhaps you may not be compensated immediately, but you will be compensated - justly - in kind and in time.  What you sow, you reap.  This Law works day in and day out in our lives, whether we know it or not, and applies not just to rendering service for payment, but to every aspect of our lives.  It is pure "cause and effect."

The Law of Increasing Returns applies specifically to instances when we render service (or sell product) of GREATER VALUE than what we receive in exchange as payment for that service or product.  When we do this, an amazing thing happens: we receive back not just the "greater value" of the service we rendered, but we receive back even more!

Let's use a simplistic - but accurately demonstrative - example.

Suppose you agree to perform a particular service to a client or customer and the fair value for your service is $500.  You and the client/customer agree upon the compensation and you commence the project.

Now, if you completed the project, and in doing so, rendered $500 worth of service, you would have performed exactly as mutually agreed upon and your compensation would be a fair exchange of value.  Both parties receive exactly that to which was bargained for and mutually agreed upon.

But, suppose in copmpleting the project, you perform some extra service - service above and beyond what the client/customer is expecting.  You "go the extra mile," as some like to say.  And, in doing so, you expect no additional compensation from the client/customer.  As Professor Hill states, you are "doing more than paid for."

When all is said and done, you perform an extra $200 worth of service for your client/customer.  She notices what you have done and is ECSTATIC!  But, she can only pay you the $500, and rightly, that is all you should expect - for that was the agreed upon exchange of value for rendering your service.

Under the Law of Compensation, you can expect to receive back - at some time - the $200 in value for the extra service that you rendered.  Perhaps your client/customer will, voluntarily, send you the money without you asking.  Or, it may come in another form.  The bottom line is that under the Law of Compensation, you WILL receive back that $200.

However, the Law of Increasing Returns is also working, and under that Law, you will receive back MORE than the extra $200 in service that you rendered.  You may receive back, perhaps, $500 or even $1,000 in value.  That client may have been so pleased with the additional value of service that you provided that she tells her clients and a month later you pick up new clients offering you more money!

One cannot predict precisely how the Law of Increasing Returns will manifest the increasing returns, but it does.  I know - I have personally experienced it hundreds of times and it works - like clockwork.

In fact, it works so well, that the Law is incorporated into my business model.  Some think that I am nuts - that I should be charging every penny (and more) for everything that I do.  But, experience has taught me that is not the way to build goodwill.

Provide Value above and beyond what is expected.  And, provide Value FIRST before you are engaged for your services.

If you follow these rules, I absolutely guarantee spectacular results.

Here is what Professor Hill states on the subject:

We will now analyze the law upon which this entire lesson is founded, namely –

THE LAW OF INCREASING RETURNS!

With this vital “tip” from Nature, which we may gather from the wheat fields, let us proceed to appropriate this Law of Increasing Returns and learn how to apply it to the service we render, to the end that it may yield returns in excess of and out of proportion to the effort put forth.

When you do only that for which you are paid, there is nothing out of the ordinary to attract favorable comment about the transaction; but, when you willingly do more than that for which you are paid, your action attracts the favorable attention of all who are affected by the transaction, and goes another step toward establishing a reputation that will eventually set the Law of Increasing Returns to work in your behalf, for this reputation will create a demand for your services, far and wide.

If you carry out this experiment in the proper attitude of mind, you will discover that which all others who have become familiar with the law upon which it is based have discovered; namely, that –

You can no more render service without receiving compensation than you can withhold the rendering of it without suffering the loss of reward.

“Cause and effect, means and ends, seed and fruit, cannot be severed,” says Emerson; “for the effect already blooms in the cause, the end pre-exists in the means, the fruit in the seed.”

Welcome back, class. 

Today's session on The Sixteen Laws of Success by Professor Napoleon Hill is Lesson Eight: Self-Control. 

And a good Lesson it is. 

It is a fact that the majority of a man’s grief comes about through lack of self-control.  The holy scriptures are full of admonition in support of self-control.  They even urge us to love our enemies and to forgive those who injure us.  The law of non-resistance runs, like a golden cord, throughout the Bible.  Study the records of those whom the world calls great, and observe that every one of them possesses this quality of self-control! 

I should know.  Self-Control is NOT one of my strong points and there is much to learn in this great Success Manual by Napoleon Hill, which has been added to The Success Manual Free Download Library and The Napoleon Hill Success Library.  I could - indeed should - read this passage everyday for the next thirty (30) days so that it may sink though my obstinate skull.

How often a trifle bit of restraint would have produced a much better outcome?  Or, perhaps, a bit more focus on the task at hand, rather than to be side-tracked by irrelevant diversions?  Or, to allow oneself to anger - a pure reactionary response to either internal or external factors - rather than to remain calm and exercise patience and understanding? 

Self-Control is an absolute requisite to achieving Success at any level in any endeavor. 

The little things all add up over time, that is for sure. 

An important aspect of Lesson Eight: Self-Control is The Law of Retaliation.  Unless you have already read this Lesson, and know to what Professor Hill refers, you will likely draw the wrong conclusion about this magnificent Law.  It is simply another embodiment of The Law of Attraction.  I defer to Professor Hill's explanation: 

The Law of Retaliation

Among other laws which are available to the person who exercises self-control is the Law of Retaliation.  You know what “retaliate” means! 

In the sense that we are using here it means to “return like for like,” and not merely to avenge or to seek revenge, as is commonly meant by the use of this word. 

If I do you an injury you retaliate at first opportunity.  If I say unjust things about you, you will retaliate in kind, even in greater measure! 

On the other hand, if I do you a favor you will reciprocate even in greater measure if possible. 

Through the proper use of this law I can get you to do whatever I wish you to do.  If I wish you to dislike me and to lend your influence toward damaging me, I can accomplish this result by inflicting upon you the sort of treatment that I want you to inflict upon me through retaliation. 

If I wish your respect, your friendship and your cooperation I can get these by extending to you my friendship and cooperation. 

On these statements I know that we are together.  You can compare these statements with your own experience and you will see how beautifully they harmonize.

The man who attracts you to him through his pleasing personality is merely making use of the Law of Harmonious Attraction, or the Law of Retaliation, both of which, when analyzed, mean that “like attracts like.” 

If you will study, understand and make intelligent use of the Law of Retaliation you will be an efficient and successful salesman.  When you have mastered this simple law and learned how to use it you will have learned all that can be learned about salesmanship. 

The first and probably the most important step to be taken in mastering this law is to cultivate complete self-control.  You must learn to take all sorts of punishment and abuse without retaliating in kind.  This self-control is a part of the price you must pay for mastery of the Law of Retaliation. 

When an angry person starts in to vilify and abuse you, justly or unjustly, just remember that if you retaliate in a like manner you are being drawn down to that person’s mental level, therefore that person is dominating you! 

On the other hand, if you refuse to become angry, if you retain your self-composure and remain calm and serene you retain all your ordinary faculties through which to reason.  You take the other fellow by surprise.  You retaliate with a weapon with the use of which he is unfamiliar, consequently you easily dominate him. 

Like attracts like!  There’s no denying this! 

Literally speaking, every person with whom you come in contact is a mental looking-glass in which you may see a perfect reflection of your own mental attitude.

The habit of “retaliating in kind” is so universally practiced among us that we can properly call this habit the Law of Retaliation.  If a person presents us with a gift we never feel satisfied until we have “retaliated” with something as good as or better than that which we received.  If a person speaks well of us we increase our admiration for that person, and we “retaliate” in return! 

Through the principle of retaliation we can actually convert our enemies into loyal friends.  If you have an enemy whom you wish to convert into a friend you can prove the truth of this statement if you will forget that dangerous millstone hanging around your neck, which we call “pride” (stubbornness).  Make a habit of speaking to this enemy with unusual cordiality.  Go out of your way to favor him in every manner possible.  He may seem immovable at first, but gradually he will give way to your influence and “retaliate in kind!”  The hottest coals of fire ever heaped upon the head of one who has wronged you are the coals of human kindness.

I am going to do some serious study of Lesson Eight and offer my recommendation that you do the same.  It seems the entire world could use a little more Self-Control these days.

Passage from Lesson Eight: Self-Control 

In the preceding lesson you learned of the value of enthusiasm.  You also learned how to generate enthusiasm and how to transmit its influence to others, through the principle of suggestion. 

You come, now, to the study of self-control, through which you may direct your enthusiasm to constructive ends.  Without self-control enthusiasm resembles the unharnessed lightning of an electrical storm – it may strike anywhere; it may destroy life and property. 

Enthusiasm is the vital quality that arouses you to action, while self-control is the balance wheel that directs your action so that it will build up and not tear down. 

To be a person who is well “balanced,” you must be a person in whom enthusiasm and self-control are equalized.  A survey which I have just completed of the 160,000 adult inmates of the penitentiaries of the United States discloses the startling fact that ninety-two per cent of these unfortunate men and women are in prison because they lacked the necessary self-control to direct their energies constructively. 

Read the foregoing paragraph again; it is authentic, it is startling! 

It is a fact that the majority of a man’s grief comes about through lack of self-control.  The holy scriptures are full of admonition in support of self-control.  They even urge us to love our enemies and to forgive those who injure us.  The law of non-resistance runs, like a golden cord, throughout the Bible. 

Study the records of those whom the world calls great, and observe that every one of them possesses this quality of self-control! 

For example, study the characteristics of our own immortal Lincoln.  In the midst of his most trying hours he exercised patience, poise and self-control.  These were some of the qualities which made him the great man that he was.  He found disloyalty in some of the members of his cabinet; but, for the reason that this disloyalty was toward him, personally, and because those in whom he found it had qualities which made them valuable to his country, Lincoln exercised self-control and disregarded the objectionable qualities. 

How many men do you know who have self-control to equal this? 

In language more forceful than it was polished, Billy Sunday exclaimed from the pulpit: “There is something as rotten as hell about the man who is always trying to show some other fellow up!”  I wonder if the “devil” didn’t yell, “Amen, brother!” when Billy made that statement? 

However, self-control becomes an important factor in this Course on the Law of Success, not so much because lack of it works hardships on those who become its victims, as for the reason that those who do not exercise it suffer the loss of a great power which they need in their struggle for achievement of their definite chief aim.

The entire topic of Enthusiasm is particularly appropriate now.  We have completed one calendar year and have begun a new one.  Many have taken to outlining and defining their Goals for 2011.  Others have engaged in the timeless excercise of making "Resolutions."  Either way, hitting the ground running - with ENTHUSIASM - is the most powerful method of implementing your Quality Changes for this year.

Consider the following exerpts from Lesson Seven:

Enthusiasm is a state of mind that inspires and arouses one to put action into the task at hand.  It does more than this – it is contagious, and vitally affects not only the enthusiast, but all with whom he comes in contact.

Enthusiasm bears the same relationship to a human being that steam does to the locomotive – it is the vital moving force that impels action.  The greatest leaders of men are those who know how to inspire enthusiasm in their followers.  Enthusiasm is the most important factor entering into salesmanship.  It is, by far, the most vital factor that enters into public speaking.

Mix enthusiasm with your work and it will not seem hard or monotonous.  Enthusiasm will so energize your entire body that you can get along with less than half the usual amount of sleep and at the same time it will enable you to perform from two to three times as much work as you usually perform in a given period, without fatigue.

Enthusiasm is not merely a figure of speech; it is a vital force that you can harness and use with profit.  Without it you would resemble an electric battery without electricity.

Enthusiasm is the vital force with which you recharge your body and develop a dynamic personality.  Some people are blessed with natural enthusiasm, while others must acquire it.  The procedure through which it may be developed is simple.  It begins by the doing of the work or rendering of the service which one likes best.  If you should be so situated that you cannot conveniently engage in the work which you like best, for the time being, then you can proceed along another line very effectively by adopting a definite chief aim that contemplates your engaging in that particular work at some future time.

Lack of capital and many other circumstances over which you have no immediate control may force you to engage in work which you do not like, but no one can stop you from determining in your own mind what your definite chief aim in life shall be, nor can anyone stop you from planning ways and means for translating this aim into reality, nor can anyone stop you from mixing enthusiasm with your plans.

When your own mind is vibrating at a high rate, because it has been stimulated with enthusiasm, that vibration registers in the minds of all within its radius, and especially in the minds of those with whom you come in close contact.

Welcome, Class, to the FINAL "Law of Success" session of 2010.  This is not our final post of the year, but it is the final lecture from Professor Hill from his "The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons" series for 2010.

Today's Lesson is a very important one: Imagination. Or, from another perspective, "Creativity."

In order to Succeed, the Student must employ his or her Imagination (Creativity).  All of the great Successes in history have been by those who dared to do more than just dream; they truly Desired to Realize their dreams.  They did not just stop with the dream; they asked "How?"

Asking "How?" - and pursuing the answer to the question - necessarily requires Imagination and Creativity.  It is a requisite step in Realization of the worthy Ideal.

All of the magnificently Successful asked "How?" and took Action to find a way.  However, the point to keep in Mind is that they all started without really knowing "how."  They took Action, fueled by Imagination and Creativity, and applied the Principle of Persistence until they found a way.

That is what separates those who Succeed from those who fail.  Those who fail do not dare to Imagine.  They don't take Action.  And, if they do, they QUIT as soon as they hit that first major Obstacle.  They turn off their Imagination and Creative faculties and say "It cannot be done," and they walk away.

Nobody really fails unless and until they honestly stop trying.

The principle of the law of attraction, through which like attracts like, explain many a failure.  If the mind has a tendency to attract from the ether those thought vibrations which harmonize with the dominating thoughts of a given mind, you can easily understand why a negative mind that dwells upon failure and lacks the vitalizing force of self-confidence would not attract a positive mind that is dominated by thoughts of success.

Remember that which was said about the Law of Attraction through the operation of which “like attracts like.”  If you look and act the part of a failure you will attract nothing but failures.

Sometimes we need to walk away for a bit in order to recharge our Creative juices and get our Imagination working in a different frame.  That, however, is not quitting, since the intention is to keep going (Persistence).

Professor Hill tells it much better, so I strongly urge you to download today's lecture and begin reading.  Lesson Six is inspiring!

Fear kills ambition and snuffs our attempts to Succeed and achieve our Goals.  Fear stops our progress dead in its tracks.  In fact, the greatest Success Teachers and Masters cite Fear more than any other reason why we fail to attain Success, change our lives and reach our Goals.

Fear may be overt and obvious, or it may be subtle and insidious.  Either way, Fear must be defeated.

The greatest weapon for overtaking Fear and removing it from your path is Self-Confidence.  We are in luck, for Napoleon Hill is a great teacher on the subject of Self-Confidence.

Today's addition to The Success Manual Free Download Library - and also to The Napoleon Hill Free Success Library - comes a little early, as I planned to upload each Lesson on a weekly basis.  However, more goodies are planned, so we bumped Lesson Three up several days.  I trust you will not mind!

Okay, Success Students, it is on to Lesson Two in "The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons" by the fabulous Napoleon Hill.  Last week's introductory Lesson One: The Master Mind is available for download and if you did not grab your own personal copy of this "must have" Success Manual, you better do so now.  Class is in session and homework is not an option.

I really enjoyed reading Lesson Two over the past couple of days as I compiled and edited the volume for The Success Manual Free Download Library.  Clearly, The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons - which was published approximately nine years before Mr. Hill's smash classic, "Think and Grow Rich," laid the ground work for the later work. Yet, the earlier material provides greater detail and explanation not found in the more popular Think and Grow Rich.  There is some obvious overlap, but I was not aware of the richness of Mr. Hill's earlier project.

Consider the following quotes from Lesson Two:

The object of this lesson is not to inform you as to what your lifework should be, for indeed this could be done with accuracy only after you had been completely analyzed, but it is intended as a means of impressing upon your mind a clear conception of the value of a definite purpose of some nature, and of the value of understanding the principle of organized effort as a means of attaining the necessary power with which to materialize your definite purpose.

Stating this principle from another angle: You choose, for example, a definite purpose as your lifework and make up your mind that you will carry out that purpose.  From the very moment that you make this choice, this purpose becomes the dominating thought in your consciousness, and you are constantly on the alert for facts, information and knowledge with which to achieve that purpose.  From the time that you plant a definite purpose in your mind, your mind begins, both consciously and unconsciously, to gather and store away the material with which you are to accomplish that purpose.

It is most appalling to know that ninety-five per cent of the people of the world are drifting aimlessly through life, without the slightest conception of the work for which they are best fitted, and with no conception whatsoever of even the need of such a thing as a definite objective toward which to strive.

[To most individuals, when asked their purpose in life, the response is]: “My definite purpose in life is to be of as much service to the world as possible and earn a good living.”  That answer is about as definite as a frog’s conception of the size of the universe is accurate!

If success depends upon power, and if power is organized effort, and if the first step in the direction of organization is a definite purpose, then one may easily see why such a purpose is essential.

Whatever you want you may get if you want it with sufficient intensity, and keep on wanting it, providing the object wanted is one within reason, and you ACTUALLY BELIEVE YOU WILL GET IT!  There is a difference, however, between merely “wishing” for something and ACTUALLY BELIEVING you will get it.  Lack of understanding of this difference has meant failure to millions of people.  The “doers” are the “believers” in all walks of life.  Those who BELIEVE they can achieve the object of their definite chief aim do not recognize the word impossible.  Neither do they acknowledge temporary defeat.  They KNOW they are going to succeed, and if one plan fails they quickly replace it with another plan.

This is just a taste of what awaits inside . . .  start studying class, Lesson Three will be next week, whether you show up or not.

Success and Prosperity Master: Wallace D. Wattles, Law of Attraction Teacher and Sage

Finally, after what has seemed an eternity and a relentless deluge of challenges and obstacles, we are putting the finishing touches and running the final tests on The Success Manual Prosperity Library web site, featuring The Wattles Prosperity Bible, The Law of Attraction Prosperity Bible and The Wattles Quotable Bible.

If I was not a Student of Success - as was the case in my prior life - I would have called this venture "a nightmare."  In fact, most people who are personally aware of the trials that we have gone through to make this become a reality see it as that - "what a nightmare!"  I don't.  This challenge was an enormous test of the very principles and teachings to which I subscribe.

If I gave up, quite, walked away - now, that would be failure.  Not temporary defeat, but failure, and I would have nobody to blame but myself.

The Wattles Prosperity Bible

 A Five Volume Compilation of the Works of Wallace D. Wattles

When Wallace Delois Wattles was growing up in the post-Civil War America, the country was undergoing major changes in the political, economic and social arenas.

While the South was rebuilding its battered infrastructure, the North, where Wattles lived, was prospering, both industrially and agriculturally.  This period, known as the Second Industrial Revolution, began in the mid-19^th century, with the growth and expansion of steel, petroleum, as well as chemical and electrical sectors; railways and steam ship industry also thrived in the still- young nation.

In fact, by the time the 19^th century came to a close and the new one dawned, corporate giants such as U.S. Steel and General Electric spawned the legendary tycoons by the names of Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew P. Mellon, and J.P. Morgan, among other renowned and often notorious wheelers and dealers of that era.

The extravagant lifestyles of these super-rich industrialists and financiers – which prompted Mark Twain to coin the phrase “Gilded Age” to describe the excesses of the wealthy people in the second half of the 1800s – did not, however, reflect the grim living conditions of the working class.   Historical records show that in 1890, when Wattles was 30, 11 million of America’s 12 million families earned less than $1,200 a year, with the average annual income of $380, well below the poverty line. 

Wallace Delois Wattles: Law of Attraction Sage, Author and Teacher and Master of Success and Prosperity. Mr. Wattles' teachings were a driving force behind Rhonda Byrne's book, "The Secret." How much so? The first time she read "The Science of Getting Rich," she cried!

Not much is known today about Wattles’ life and family, but from the information that is available to us we can surmise that he was born into that modest – not to say poverty-stricken – milieu like the vast majority of his countrymen. 

We cannot say with any certainty that he was inspired by the well-heeled tycoons of the era, but we do know that he turned the art of getting rich into a science.

His philosophy about wealth is succinctly summed up in this quote: “Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.”

Putting together Wattles’ biography is a challenging task because very little is known about him.   Whether this dearth was a matter of modesty and humility or merely poor record-keeping we cannot guess, but anyone attempting to research Wattles’ life will hit a brick wall riddled with many gaps and holes.  For instance, his schooling remains a mystery, as does his family.  We know that he had a daughter, Florence, but have no information about his wife.  We also know that early on he worked on a farm and later as a lecturer in Indiana, as well as in some capacity at a Methodist Church, but have no clue about any other jobs he might have held.  We know he died young – at 51 – of “frail” health, but possess no details of what illness he suffered from.  He was a prolific writer, publishing scores of articles, essays and books.  Many of the articles and essays were published as compilations; others as single articles. However, specific details as to many of his published works are few.

What little we do know about his childhood and later life can be gleaned from the letters Florence wrote to Wattles’ publisher, Elizabeth Towne.   From those letters we can construct a sketchy portrait of a compassionate and caring man of profound convictions, and a prolific writer who believed his ideas would transform people’s lives.

Although Wattles remains – given the scarcity of information about him – somewhat of an enigma, he wrote some of the most powerful self-help books ever published.  As a matter of fact, the young farm boy grew up to be a trailblazer in the area of wealth-building, personal empowerment and success, a field that, while in its infancy during Wattles’ lifetime, blossomed as the “New Thought” era, and which today is a billion-dollar industry.  Indeed, the “self improvement” market in the U.S. alone is estimated as worth more than $13.9 billion in 2010.[1]

In a way, Wallace Delois Wattles’ life is a quintessential rags-to-riches story. 

He was born in 1860 in Illinois, and later lived in Indiana.  According to the 1880 US Federal Census, young Wallace was probably the only child of a gardener and a housewife.  He lived with his parents on a farm in Nunda Township, McHenry County, Illinois.  With little formal education, he spent his early years toiling as a farm laborer.  In those days, life on a farm was dismal, requiring long hours of backbreaking labor.  Even though new farm equipment was invented and introduced during that period, horses, oxen and people still provided the power that fueled the machines. 

Eking out a living from a farm, which relied heavily on weather-dependant crops, was a challenge then, as it is, though maybe to a lesser degree, now.   We do not know for sure whether this was the only work Wattles did in his youth, but his life at the time is reported to have been one of poverty, hardship, and failure.  We will never know for certain, but perhaps this strife had sparked Wattles’ desire to become successful and rich and to understand proper and healthy living. 

One of Florence’s messages to Mrs. Towne provides some insight into what drove her father to overcome his humble beginnings and ultimately led him to pen a series of highly successful self-help books:   “For years his life was cursed by poverty and the fear of poverty.  He was always scheming and planning to get for his family those things, which make the abundant life possible.”

In 1896, the 36-year-old Midwesterner attended a “convention of reformers” in Chicago, where he met George Davis Herron.   Two years Wattles’ junior, Herron was a controversial Congregational Church minister and professor of Applied Christianity at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he attracted attention for his radical religious views, namely a new philosophy called Christian Socialism.  A movement that originated in the mid-19th-century Europe, it combined the fundamentals of Socialism with the principles of Christianity as a means of helping the poor.

Florence wrote to Mrs. Towne that her father caught Herron’s social vision.  “I shall never forget the morning he came home,” she related.  “It was Christmas.  Mother had put her last dollar into a cuff box and we had placed it beneath an evergreen branch which served for our Christmas tree and which we had illuminated with tallow candles and strung with popcorn.  Finally Father came.  With that beautiful smile he praised the tree, said the cuff box was just what he had been wanting - and took us all in his arms to tell us of the wonderful social message of Jesus, the message which he later embodied in ‘A New Christ.’ From that day until his death he worked unceasingly to realize the glorious vision of human brotherhood.”

According to Florence, at one time her father had held a position in the Methodist Church, but was fired because of his “heresy,” possibly the Christian Socialism views, which were not quite compatible with the mainstream Christianity.  Two of his books, “A New Christ” and “Jesus: The Man and His Work” focused on Christianity from a Socialist perspective.  As a matter of fact, Wattles was so involved in the movement, that he twice ran as a Socialist candidate for two public offices:  in the Eighth Congressional District in 1908, and two years later, for the office of Prosecuting Attorney for Indiana’s Madison County’s 50th court district.  He lost both elections, but Florence became a delegate to the Socialist Party National Committee in 1912 and 1915.

Another new spiritual movement that Wattles embraced with zeal and conviction, and which had, in large measure, influenced his thinking and writing, was called New Thought.  This movement started to emerge in the second half of the 19^th century, at about the same time as Christian Socialism.

This was a turning point for Wattles, the moment that likely re-defined and re-directed his life to some degree. 

The movement, which remains active to this day, promotes the idea that all of life’s circumstances and events, whether positive or negative, be they physical or mental in nature, originate in the mind as a consequence of our thinking and beliefs, and, therefore, “right thinking” can change our lives positively. 

Like many thinkers and philosophers from a variety of churches and religious denominations, and even some secular groups and individuals as well, Wattles became a proponent of these metaphysical tenets relating to the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, creative visualization, and other essential life forces that formed the basis of his beliefs and writings.  Today the self-improvement and personal growth industry is a thriving, multi-billion-dollar sector, but in Wattles’ time it was still in its nascent stages.   The New Thought movement, however, marked an important milestone in the development of the self-help phenomenon.

Because of the unbridled optimism, positive energy, and personal empowerment inherent to the New Thought principles, Wattles, along with his contemporaries like Napoleon Hill, Frank Channing Haddock, Thomas Troward, William Walker Atkinson, and, a bit later, Dale Carnegie, had become one of the earliest self-help pioneers – people who believed in improving themselves and all the aspects of their lives by harvesting their spiritual and inner strengths.  Essentially, the mind can achieve whatever it can conceive.

Wattles’ brand of motivational self-improvement philosophy is best expressed in this quote of his: “The scientific use of thought consists in forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want; in holding fast to the purpose to get what you want; and in realizing with grateful faith that you do get what you want.”

Wattles discovered an outlet for his ideas in Nautilus, a magazine for New Thought writers founded in 1898 by Elizabeth Towne.  In it, Wattles found a fitting forum to advance his ideas and foster his writing skills.  As Florence explained: “When we came to Elwood (Indiana) three years ago, Father began a Sunday night lectureship in Indianapolis.  This was our only source of income.  Later he began to write for Nautilus and to word out his own philosophy.  He wrote almost constantly.  Then it was that he formed his mental picture.  He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality of power, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision.”

Wattles applied the New Thought principles to his own life through personal experimentation.  For example, he tested some of the health and food fads fashionable at that time, such as the “No Breakfast Plan,” before encouraging his readers to try out his theories on themselves. 

How a poor man with little education was able to form such a far-reaching vision and bring it to fruition with numerous books remains a mystery.  What is certain is that his works, at least by some assessments, are among the most powerful personal improvement books ever written.   

While Wattles authored numerous works, his best-known are likely the trilogy of “The Science of Being Rich” (1910), “The Science of Being Well” (1910) and “The Science of Being Great” (1911).  All three are fitting examples of self-improvement and personal success theories he had become known for, as demonstrated in Florence’s letter to Mrs.  Towne: “The supreme faith of the man never left him; never for a moment did he lose confidence in the power of the master Intelligence to right every wrong and to give to every man and woman his or her share of the good things of life.”

The above quote is a paragraph from Chapter 2 of Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich,” a forerunner of every personal finance and self-help book ever written.  His statement that this pragmatic text is “intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward,” rings as true in the second decade of the 21^st century as it did when it was first published 100 years ago.  

Incredibly, there exists today million dollar self-help businesses founded solely on “The Science of Getting Rich.”

While many people believe that amassing wealth is a matter of hard work, luck, or a combination of both, Wattles promoted a more scientific approach.  “There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic,” he famously noted.  “There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches, and once these laws are learned and obeyed by anyone, that person will get rich with mathematical certainty.”

“The Science of Getting Rich,” still widely read and highly acclaimed today, laid ground for “The Science of Being Great,” in which Wattles stated that “Greatness is equally inherent in all, and may be manifested by all.  Every person may become great.”

The inspirational and motivational message is also clear in “The Science of Being Well,” where Wattles writes that the work is directed at “those who want health, and who want a practical guide and handbook, not a philosophical treatise.  It is an instructor in the use of the universal Principle of Life, and my effort has been to explain the way in so plain and simple a fashion that the reader, though he may have given no previous study to New Thought or metaphysics, may readily follow it to perfect health.  While retaining all essentials, I have carefully eliminated all non-essentials; I have used no technical, abstruse, or difficult language, and have kept the one point in view at all times.”   

The question that arises is whether Wattles successfully applied his New Thought beliefs and theories on how an average person can become rich, happy and healthy regardless of his or her circumstances to his own life.  From Florence’s correspondence to Mrs. Towne it would appear that he did.  Before his death in 1911 at 51, Florence reported that “he made lots of money, and had good health, except for his extreme frailty.”

There is no information on how many “regular” people who read Wattles’ works in the past century had been influenced by his message.  We do know, however, that the Australian New Thought writer Rhonda Byrne said her inspiration for the hit 2006 movie, “The Secret,” as well as the same-titled book, came from Wattles’ “The Science of Getting Rich.”  When she first opened the book in 2004, Byrne relates on her website, “Something inside of me had me turn the pages one by one, and I can still remember my tears hitting the pages as I was reading it.  It gave me a glimpse of The Secret and it was like a flame inside of my heart.” 

So in the end, the little-known life of Wallace Delois Wattles was, in many ways, a quintessentially American story of pulling oneself up by the bootstraps, succeeding against all odds, and influencing the lives of others.  In the words of his daughter Florence, “His life was truly the powerful life.”
